" By Marty Smith How’s your financial portfolio? Is it healthy or is it on the operating table about to crash? We have been taught about the importance of having a healthy financial portfolio to prepare us for the future. It is designed to make sure you are taken care of in your golden years. You work hard all of your adult life so when you retire, you’re in good financial shape. We are investing in our own future. Let me ask you another question; how’s your spiritual portfolio? Are you pouring into your spiritual portfolio, sharing the Word of God, telling others about Jesus or are you just living each day not caring or thinking about that? Are you giving to other ministries or are you keeping that money to yourself? Just as we invest in our financial futures, we should be investing in the Kingdom. A few years ago, my Pastor was talking about giving. Needless to say, it got awfully quiet when the subject came up! But then he did something that I’ll never forget. He passed the offering plate around the congregation and challenged us by saying, “There are one dollar bills in the offering plate. Take out one dollar and give it to a minstry this week. You can’t keep it, you have to give it away”. That moment changed the way that I, along with many others that day, approached giving. That one dollar bill was not mine, it was given to me to give to someone else. The next week, we were able to share our “giving story”. The stories were amazing! Lives were changed with just a one dollar bill. So here’s my challenge to you; let’s say that you’ve been given twenty dollars. You now have twenty dollars in your hand. But there’s a catch…….you can’t keep it. You have to give that twenty dollars to a minstry or someone in need. I’m going to challenge each one of you to take an actual twenty dollar bill and give it to another minstry. It has to be a ministry that you’ve never dealt with before or have given to in the past. It may be a stretch for some, but by faith, I believe God is going to provide you with an extra twenty dollars in your budget this month. By giving one (1) twenty dollar bill to another ministry, one that you have never dealt with before, it will change your life. It will change how you look at things. It’s not something that we should take lightly. We should pray and ask God, “Who do I bless this twenty dollar bill”? Then, when you’ve given the money away, I want to hear your story. Email me at: [email protected] and tell me how it went. With your permission, I’ll share those stories in my next article. I can’t wait to hear your story! You see, we should be looking at giving not as a burden, but rather an investment into the Kingdom. It should be viewed as an opportunity to spread the Gospel even further. You’ve been given twenty dollars to give to someone else. Who will you give it to? Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.” (Psalms 25:14-15) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom! Friends, we all know trouble will come! Matthew 5:45 says it well, “that ye may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust”. We believers have a secret weapon, a proven way out of the trap, better still, to avoid the trap all together! His name is Jesus Christ, the Son of the true and living God! We just have to keep our eyes focused on Him! KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS With our eyes and hearts focused on Him, we can do anything that brings glory to Him! We can do great things! But what causes us to look away? What is it that so many times cripples us and keeps us from being all that we can be for Jesus? Do you know what one of the most frequent topics Jesus spoke about during his ministry? WORRY! Worry was one of the most frequent things Christ talked to his disciples about. We are more like the disciples than we might care to think. Remember the storm on the Sea of Galilee? The men were experienced fishermen. They had seen many storms during their lifetime. They knew that storms could suddenly come up unexpectedly and that they were dangerous and in some cases, life threatening. Suddenly and without warning, a fierce storm arose and the waves began crashing over their boat and they thought that they were all going to drown. But this storm was the worst that they had ever seen. Yet at the end of the boat or the stern, there was Jesus fast asleep. They thought how could he sleep when they were about to perish in the storm? They were out in the middle of the Sea of Galilee and there was no way that they could swim back to shore. Matthew 8:24-27 describes the event: “Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Just before this event, the disciples had seen Jesus heal a paralyzed and suffering Centurion’s servant from a distance, seen Him cure a man of leprosy, cast out many demons from several people, and healed Peter’s mother-in-law. Already they were terrified and worried that they were about to perish. Yet Jesus is fast asleep at the stern of the boat. The stern is the area of the ship where the boat is steered which indicates that he was in control of where the boat was going. When they woke Jesus up, He then rebuked the storm including the winds and the waves and immediately it was calm. During the fierce storms on the Sea of Galilee, often it took hours for the wind and waves to calm, yet at Jesus’ command, at that split second, all was calm. Jesus rebuked the disciples too for their lack of faith. And the disciples were terrified because they had not imagined that someone could make even the winds and waves obey Him.
