Introduction to Marathon Paddling

Marathon canoe racing is all about tactics and endurance. Marathon races can be conducted over distances varying from a few kilometres through to many hundreds of kilometres. Canoe Victoria and its affiliated clubs conduct marathon races throughout the year and throughout the state. The lower age limit of the discipline is 10 years but there is no upper age limit and many paddlers who are 60+ still enjoy competing. While some races are organised such that every competitor races over the same distance, most races have a range of classes racing over a range of distances. Many races have a full distance of around 24 to 32km for open age-group competitors while juniors and veterans will race reduced distances depending on their age group. Other races are organised such that paddlers are grouped with those of similar ability and race over distances suitable for that level of ability.

In marathon races conducted as a point-to-point race over a long section of river, competitors sometimes have to carry, or , their canoe around an impassable obstacle such as a waterfall, lock or weir. At higher levels of the sport, portaging is often included as a feature, even though the race is likely to be conducted as a series of laps on a short section or river or lake. A 100 to 200m section of the shore adjacent to the course will be designated as a portage area and competitors will be required to come ashore and carry their canoe for the length of the portage course. Competitive portaging requires considerable skill and greatly enhances the excitement of the race.

Wide ranges of craft are accepted at most marathon races. Paddlers at the top level of the sport race single and double similar to those used in flat-water sprint racing. Racing classes are usually also available for touring kayaks and touring . Other races allow a very wide range of paddle craft such as sea kayaks, recreational canoes and kayaks, ocean skis, stand up paddleboards, surf skis and canoes.

3 Victorian Canoe Races

Races are held on sheltered waterways free of rapids or large waves. Rivers, lakes and coastal estuaries are typical locations. Races can be point-to-point downriver, or laps conducted on a section of river or lake. Venues can be as far west as Warrnambool, as far East as Bairnsdale and at a variety of locations along the Murray River. There is at least one marathon race held in every month of the year.

The Grand Prix Summer Series consists of 5 races over the months of January to March, leading to Victorian Marathon Team selection from the winners at the State Championship. The selected team compete for Victoria at the Australian Championships held in April. The winners of this event can then go on to represent Australia at the World Cup in August and World Championships in September.

The Winter Series consists of 6 races over the months of May to August. A divisional system applies so that paddlers of any ability, in any craft, can race against other paddlers of a similar ability. Three races are designated as singles events and three as doubles, but either type can be paddled at any event.

The Murray Marathon is considered by many to be the ultimate challenge for this discipline of the sport. Conducted on the Murray River starting at Yarrawonga over 5 days and is now being held in November. It’s one of the longest canoe races in the world. The event is run as a fundraiser by the YMCA. In October and November, a number of races are run as lead-up events to the Murray Marathon, with race distances of up to 70km. Paddlers concerned with the demands of a full distance entry in these ultra-marathon events can enter as part of a relay team.

For more about the 2015 Murray Marathon go to http://www.murraymarathon.ymca.org. au/ .

Please note also that the YMCA are seeking pre-registration for the 2015 event with a deposit by 1st March 2015. They want 200 paddlers signed up prior to the 1st March to ensure the 2015 event is conducted.

The Winter Race Series and the Victorian Championships are run by the Canoeing Victoria Marathon Technical Committee. The Summer Race Series are generally run by the individual clubs and race formats and entry fees for club-run races are decided by the hosting club.

8 What is changing in 2015? The Marathon Committee are eager to see increased participation at competitions and continue the encouragement of those who are “regulars” at races. The committee have discussed options to achieve these goals, and are proposing the following changes to the 2015 competition program. The modifications aim to provide a more engaging racing experience for paddlers, however no one can do this alone and we need your support and involvement to deliver the racing program you want.

1) Long lap format

Most Winter Series races will be run over a long lap (~8 km) or out-and-back format. The international short lap format will be retained for the Victorian Championships for consistency with Nationals and Worlds

2) More race variety

We shall have some new race locations and course layouts so that races aren’t the same old same old each year

3) More compact race schedule

Races will now start at 10:00 am so that they take up only half a day, not a whole day, giving paddlers time to do other things in the afternoon

4) Some races on Saturday afternoons

Country races in particular will now generally be scheduled for Saturday afternoon, giving city paddlers the opportunity to drive up and back in one day if they wish. There will also be the opportunity of a social paddle on Sunday morning for those staying over to experience different water

5) User selected race distances

With the longer lap format most races will now offer two or three distances (typically 8, 16 and 24 km). Paddlers will be able to select the distance they wish to paddle, rather than be set a distance based on ranking

6) Improved communication

A dedicated communications position will assist in promoting events and keeping paddlers informed.

The Marathon Committee continues to encourage greater involvement by all members of the paddling community, including expanding participation by equipment vendors and encouraging clubs, schools and training groups to bring tents and signage, etc. to create a sense of occasion at race events.

Thank you

The committee thanks all those who have contributed ideas to the proposed changes and looks forward to further feedback from interested parties. We take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers for their contribution during 2014 and their ongoing assistance, without which these events could not be held.

15 Victorian Championships Class Distances Race distances at Australian Canoe Marathon Championships reflect race distances at ICF World Marathon Championships. The broad philosophy behind the race distances is that the fastest competitors in each class should finish the race in about the same time taken to run a traditional marathon of 42.195 km, i.e. around 2 hours and 15 minutes (for men and women). Victorian Championship race distances are set somewhat shorter than Australian and ICF championship distances for some veterans classes to encourage participation given limited paddler numbers.

Other classes and distances will be determined on race day by the race committee

25 WS 3 Team Pursuit Race Format Information

2015 Marathon Winter Series Race 3 YARRA TEAM PURSUIT

Race format information

Format : This is a team -based race, with team s comprised of three or four boats (single s and/ or doubles). The objective is to work together to get your team over the line in the fastest time. There are Short (9 km), Medium (12 km) and Long (22 km) course options (with Sub-jnr 4 km). --- Team composition : Team members can be from any age group, gender, divisional ranking or club affiliation and can paddle any craft. All craft types are welcome. All team members paddle the same distance. --- Course layout : See attached maps. The short course is from the Fairfield Boathouse (n.b. not Fairfield Canoe Club) to Kane’s Bridge and return. The medium course is from Fairfield Boathouse to Dight’s Falls signs and return. The long course is from Fairfield Boathouse to Bellbird Landing, then upstream to the top of Zoli’s (aka. Freeway) straight, then downstream to Dight’s Falls signs, then back to Fairfield Boathouse. The sub-junior course is from Fairfield Boathouse to Bellbird Landing and return. All boats will assemble on the stretch of water between Fairfield Canoe Club and INCC prior to the first start. --- Start order : Given limited river width each start will comprise approximately six to nine boats, with starts at 20 to 30 second intervals. Long course teams will start first, with start order based on expected speed (estimated by the race committee). This is to minimize congestion during overtaking. Sub-jnr teams will start next, followed by short course and then medium course teams. This start order should minimise congestion at the turns. --- Start format : Members of each short course team will start together; hence each short course start will comprise two to three teams, each of three to four boats. For the medium and long course teams the boats from each team will be split over two consecutive starts. Hence each start will comprise four to five teams of one to two boats (with the other one or two boats from each team in the subsequent start). This is to provide an additional level of challenge, requiring some time for each team to form on the river. Hence it will probably make sense for medium and long distance teams to start their faster boats in the “second” start, but it is up to each teams as to how they wish to organize themselves. --- Results : The starting time for each team is the starting time of the first boat or boats from that team (e.g. for long distance teams split over two starts). The finishing time for each team will be the time of the last team member across the line. If a team member does not finish the course (DNF or DSQ) all team members will receive this result. Race points will be allocated using the CV Marathon handicapping system, which adjusts for age, gender, boat type and distance. Hence each team’s handicap factor will be the average of the handicap factors of each of the members.

41 Canoeing Victoria Marathon Points System

What’s changed? We revised the points system commencing the 2014 season to adjust for craft type and race distance in addition to the age and gender handicap factors introduced in 2013.

Why? The purpose of the points system is to provide an equitable basis for comparing paddlers. This year we can now account for the differences in craft type and race distance paddled in addition to age and gender. This means that if you are a capable paddler in a range of craft (such as TKs or TCs or Ks) you should receive the same race points regardless of which type of craft or distance you paddle. You can also compare your performance with other paddlers in other types of craft and other age groups for example.

Method : We compare performance based on the handicap adjusted speed for each race. The fastest paddler on handicap receives 100 points and the slowest paddler on handicap receives 1 point. Everyone else is ranked in between. The handicap is based on each paddler’s age, gender, craft type and distance paddled. The individual factors for age, gender, craft type and distance are based on actual performance data. o Age and gender factors are based on data from Marathon World Championships (for U18, U23, Open and Vet categories) and Australian National Championships (for U14 to U16). o Craft factors are based on Marathon World Championship data for international class C and K boats and Hawkesbury Canoe Classic and Murray Marathon factors for touring and outrigger canoes, touring kayaks and stand- up paddleboards. o Distance factors are based on world record data for various race distances.

Philosophy: The handicap factors reflect the performance that can be achieved by paddlers, based on their age and gender, in a given craft and for the distance paddled. It is not about giving every paddler equal first place. It is about providing a reasonable basis for comparing who is paddling well given their circumstances.

Points: The points for every paddler will be tracked for each race in the series. Paddlers will earn individual points for each race, regardless of “singles” or “doubles” race designation. The paddler's score for the series will be based on his or her best five races out of the annual race series. Age, gender, craft type and distance handicap factors are summarized on the following page.

Examples : The handicap factor for a V40 female paddler competing in a TK1 over 12 km would be: Age (0.939) * Gender (0.835) * Craft (0.895) * Distance (0.972) = 0.682. The handicap factor for an Open male paddler competing in a K1 over 24 km would be: Age (1.000) * Gender (1.000) * Craft (1.000) * Distance (0.926) = 0.926. Handicap factors for doubles boats reflect the average of the handicap factors for the crew.

More information : See the reports explaining the handicapping factors in more detail on the Canoeing Victoria website http://vic.canoe.org.au/paddlesports/marathon/ Select Resources or contact Joe Alia or John Young.

State Marathon Team Selection Races (Grand Prix Series) As part of the race calendar each year the Canoeing Victoria Marathon Committee is to select and nominate which races will be used as part of the selection criteria for those paddlers wishing to nominate for selection in the Victorian Team.

45 Systems used for Marathon Racing competitions: Divisional, Class & Sub-junior

Divisional System Aim & Purpose of Divisional System The overall aim of the divisional system is to enable paddlers to race others of similar ability, regardless of age, gender and boat type, and to prepare paddlers for national and international competitions. Its purpose is to: foster strong competition improve the performance of individual paddlers provide graduated increases to full marathon race distance (in Div 1 & 2).

Structure of Divisional System There are 9 divisions. All divisions are performance based, i.e. perform well and you will be promoted into the next division (refer promotion rules). This is designed to provide well matched competition within each division and a pathway for movement into higher divisions for high performing paddlers. Equally, paddlers who are not performing to the expected standard for a division may be moved down to a lower division. Two divisions are age limited: Div 9 for U14 paddlers; Div 8 for U16 & U18. Age is determined as at 1 st January in the year of competition. Allocation to other divisions is determined by assigned ranking (refer ranking rules). Paddlers may compete above their ranked division but not below. Sub-juniors (U12) are not considered part of the Divisional system but may compete in Div 9 subject to approval by the Race Committee and with permission from their parent.

Race Distances for Divisional Races Division Distance Laps & Length Restrictions Notes Div 1 24-25 km Portage required Div 2 24-25 km Portage required Div 3 20 km Portage required Div 4 20 km Portage required Div 5 15-16 km Portage required Div 6 12 km Div 7 8 km Novice senior paddlers Div 8 8 km U16, U18 Div 9 8 km U12 may paddle with permission

Portaging Portaging is an important aspect of marathon racing. Divisions 1 to 5 are designated portage classes: All Open and Junior paddlers in an international class boat (K1, K2, C1 & C2)must portage in accordance with the number of laps. Veteran 60+ paddlers in those classes need not portage but can do so if they wish. A time penalty will be applied where a paddler is required to portage and chooses not to. (The time penalty amount will be determined by the Chief Official and advised prior to the race).

Ranking System Ranking is an indicator of ability relative to other paddlers. The aim is to rank paddlers at a level which allows fair and equitable racing and encourages paddler development. Rankings are 1-9 corresponding to the Divisional structure. Paddlers will be assigned a ranking according to their race performance history. Rankings are reviewed after each singles race in the Marathon Winter Series and a determination made regarding promotions. The outcome is published on the web site. Unranked paddlers may compete in the lowest available division (and will usually commence their first race in this division): Senior – Div 7 U23 – Div 7 U16 & U18 – Div 8 U14 – Div 9 46

Paddlers will not normally be demoted except by special request to the Marathon Committee or where they have been out of racing for an extended period. Where a paddler has been out of competition for 2 years, they will come back in with a ranking that is 2 Divisions lower than their previous ranking.

Changes in rankings: Paddler results will be reviewed after each race and a paddler will be assigned to a higher division if his or her paddling speed (in a single boat) warrants this. Paddler rankings will not ordinarily be adjusted based on doubles results, due to the difficulty in differentiating rankings between the crew members. Paddlers will not automatically be assigned to a lower division due to one “slow” race result. A paddler may request a change to their ranking from the Marathon Committee if he or she feels this is warranted. Requests for review are to be made in writing. Any determination by the Marathon Committee will be final.

Doubles rankings: Divisional ranking for a doubles boat is the average of the singles ranking of the crew members, rounded to the next highest division. For example, for two paddlers ranked Div 4 and Div 7, the average of 5.5 is rounded to Division 5.

Class System This system is primarily intended to provide competition based on age, gender or boat type, such as for touring class boats, i.e. TK1,TK2, TC1, TC2. Furthermore, by arrangement with the Race Committee, a special race may be held for racing class boats where the paddlers collectively want to paddle a shorter distance than that available under the Divisional system.

Age brackets (age is determined as at 1 st January in the year of competition): Junior: U14, U16, U18 Open: 18 – 29 years (older paddlers may choose to paddle in the Open class) Veterans: 5 year groupings from 30 years upwards, i.e. Vet30, Vet35,Vet40, Vet45, etc Gender: Mens, Womens, Mixed Race distances: Full Distance, ¾ Distance, ½ Distance and 1/3 Distance Full Distance will usually be the same course and distance as defined for Division 1 in the Divisional System Age/Class/Distance allocations are as determined by the Marathon Technical Committee

Note: A constituted class comprises at least 4 boats of the same type.

Sub-junior For U12 paddlers only. Boat and gender determines classes. Race distance will usually be 3km or 4km (as determined by the Race Committee).
