Sightseeing and excursions

Rajaportti Sauna Experience on Thu 1st August (with English speaking host) Meeting: Varala lobby at 6.15pm

Rajaportin sauna in , Tampere, is the oldest public sauna in Finland still in use. Separate departments for men and women. A preheated, massive stove. A long-lasting, sturdy löyly, that is, the sauna spirit.

Rajaportin Sauna has remained more or less unchanged through decades. Here you can experience a genuine time travel to the past while entering the best sauna ever. This sauna, still heated by wood in traditional manner, was started in 1906 and has since offered memorable sauna bathing for Tampere dwellers as well as visitors from near and far.

The massive masonry stove makes the heart of the sauna. Meter-long logs are needed to make the stones, in all weighing over a ton, to glow and sparkle in red. After the fire is out, water is thrown over the stones to remove remains of carbon monoxide, then the lids of the funnel are shut, and the heat is getting smooth and steady, the stove calms down.

In each dressing room there is space for 15-20 persons at a time, and approximately 12 in the sauna room itself. They do not want any haste in the sauna and therefore appreciate that mobile phones will be shut when entering the sauna zone. Sauna bath with other sauna fellows, whether new acquaintances or old friends of yours, is an essential part of a visit to a public sauna and may make your sauna visit all the more pleasant and interesting experience. Guide: Welcome to a Finnish sauna!

Hiking Tour in Kintulammi on Sun 4th August (with English speaking guide) Meeting: Scandic Rosendahl lobby 11AM

Programme for the hiking tour has been changed a bit because of practical reasons. Instead of Helvetinjärvi National Park we head to Kintulammi Nature Reserve. Kintulammi is a great – newly updated – nature destination with trails, duckboards, lean-to’s and signposts. Lunch will be traditionally Finnish: sausages grilled around a campfire and cinnamon buns as a dessert. Maybe you’ll find some fresh berries from the forrest too!

Please take with you weather-appropriate clothing and sneakers or light hiking shoes. Maybe a light backpack would be handy. Suomen Taido I Taido Finland [email protected] Canoe-tour at lake Pyhäjärvi (with English speaking guide) Meeting: at Varala, near Rantasauna building right on the edge of Lake Pyhäjärvi 12PM (noon)

This is the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of nature! Canoeing is a nice and relaxing activity after after a busy weekend! Take with you weather-appropriate clothing.

Sightseeing Tour in Tampere – is cancelled!

*) Tip for your stay -

The nature is close everywhere you turn your head in Tampere. The location between two big lakes brings the water element to the city, which is highlighted by the green areas even right in the middle of the city. Pyynikki nature reserve area is a combination of stunning landscapes and relaxed nature trails, all in just few hundred meters from Varala Sports Institute and Scandic Rosendahl. In the summertime the paths and trails are enjoyed by foot. Don’t miss Pyynikki Observation Tower and Café during your stay in Tampere! The 26-metre tower offers a breathtaking view of the city. This place is famous for its delicious doughnuts. This unique café lies at the bottom of Pyynikki observation tower, which is located on top of the world’s highest gravel ridge, Pyynikinharju.

Suomen Taido I Taido Finland [email protected] • does not guarantee free services. As each country’s healthcare system is different services that cost nothing at home might not be free in another country.

General emergency number and ambulance service: 112 Always call 112 in urgent emergency situations, such as in case of a sudden attack of illness, or if someone’s life is in danger. If you are unsure whether a situation is an emergency or not, it is always better to call and ask. The emergency services helpline will assess what kind of help is needed and will give you advice.
