S. Eliot, “Little Gidding” Perhaps the words of T. S. Eliot best summarize this issue, and the ending of one editor’s work on this journal and the beginning of another’s. As former editor Rhonda Wilcox ended her decade-long tenure as editor of Studies in Popular Culture, my role as editor began. This issue combines our work during the transition, with Rhonda guiding some authors and I working with other contributors throughout the editing process leading to publication. Rhonda and I likely agree that we strive to ensure that every word, phrase, and sentence is right, supportive, and “at home” not only on the journal’s pages but within the many disciplines comprising popular culture. With this, my first issue, I also hope that it helps to create that easy commerce between the old and the new, just as its articles reflect our cultural past and present. This issue’s articles cover a wide range of topics, some reflecting bygone eras, with others taking topics from recent headlines. Michael Wentworth illustrates how to “dig the past” through a comparison of Jean Shephard’s works reflecting upon the pop culture artifacts of his youth. Anyone who has identified with Ralphie in A Christmas Story should understand the personal and cultural significance of memorabilia like the smiling Wimpy doll or Flash Gordon zap gun. Michelle Napierski-Prancl takes us forward a few decades to music from 1965 to 1985 and explores the connection between popular baby names given to girls and the pop hits like “Brandy” that may have increased their popularity. Analyzing recent sports news, Chris B. Geyerman discusses the NFL’s “violence against women problem” and provides a rhetorical study of the public language used to discuss the perpetrators and victims of domestic violence. The time periods covered within this issue’s articles are matched by the variety of cultural artifacts being considered in light of specific interpretations of identity. Mark C. Hill evaluates the alternative vii masculine performances in American comics by investigating Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: the Last Man. Asking what it means to be human, Juliet Kitchens explores the nature of hybridity and humanity in Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. Sarah Gregg Minslow takes a close look at the values embedded in Chik-fil-A’s classic stories series and the social roles for which children are being prepared. Popular culture stretches across time, presenting us with a wealth of artifacts to study and from which to make meaning of our lives. Although individual artifacts—whether a comic book, television series, radio serial-based toy, online headline, song, or fast food restaurant prize—may harken to a specific time and place, they also reflect our humanity and cultural identities. They indicate that, although a style goes out of fashion or a television series is canceled or news is quickly supplanted by the next headline, there is continuity among times, places, and people. The end of one era or phase gives rise to the next hot topic or product in a continuous cycle. Perhaps this is what makes studies in popular culture—and, I hope, Studies in Popular

All around this is an almost totally black screen. Now, as the camera moves slowly towards the window which is almost a postage stamp in the frame, other forms appear; barbed wire, cyclone fencing, and now, looming up against an early morning sky, enormous iron grille work. Camera travels up what is now shown to be a gateway of gigantic proportions and holds on the top of it - a huge initial "K" showing darker and darker against the dawn sky. Through this and beyond we see the fairy-tale mountaintop of Xanadu, the great castle a sillhouette as its summit, the little window a distant accent in the darkness. DISSOLVE: (A SERIES OF SET-UPS, EACH CLOSER TO THE GREAT WINDOW, ALL TELLING SOMETHING OF:) The literally incredible domain of CHARLES FOSTER KANE. Its right flank resting for nearly forty miles on the Gulf Coast, it truly extends in all directions farther than the eye can see. Designed by nature to be almost completely bare and flat - it was, as will develop, practically all marshland when Kane acquired and changed its face - it is now pleasantly uneven, with its fair share of rolling hills and one very good-sized mountain, all man-made. Almost all the land is improved, either through cultivation for farming purposes of through careful landscaping, in the shape of parks and lakes. The castle dominates itself, an enormous pile, compounded of several genuine castles, of European origin, of varying architecture - dominates the scene, from the very peak of the mountain.

When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

Remarkable doll houses, puzzles and games, pull toys, trains, planes, automobiles, and more will be featured in this color- ful exhibition, on view at Bard Graduate Center from September 18, 2015 through January 17, 2016. Although Germany, Japan, and the United States have historically produced and exported the largest numbers of toys worldwide, Sweden has a long and enduring tradition of designing and making wooden toys—from the simplest handmade plaything to more sophisticated forms. This exhibition not only reviews the production of Sweden’s toy industries but also explores the practice of handi- craft (slöjd), the educational value of wooden playthings, and the vision of childhood that Swedish reformers have promoted worldwide. In spring 2017, an advertisement for Burger King included the line “OK Google, what is the Whopper burger?” Which prompted any Google Home VPAs within earshot to begin describing the burgers to their owners? In the future – perhaps the near future – your autonomous car will not only decide when it needs maintenance, but shop for the best price, schedule an appointment and drive itself to the shop. If it is an electric vehicle, it will shop for charging stations and drive itself to the location with the best price and the most open charging poles. A little further in the future it might even own itself and run its own ride-sharing service.

DOI: 10.5294/pacla.2017.20.3.7 Abstract Telefantasy series Torchwood (2006–2011, multiple production partners) was industrially and paratextually positioned as being Welsh, despite its frequent status as an international co-production. When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4.
