Gorham Savings Bank Maine Relay Instructions

Dear Relay Team Captain:

Thank you for participating in the 2013 Gorham Savings Bank Maine Marathon Relay. Please familiarize your team with the following information.

“B”Tags/Bibs/Baton/Medals

Team race packets will contain your “B”tags, which are embedded in your bib numbers. FIRST and LAST leg runners must wear bibs w/Btag. First runner will wear #xxxx-1. Last runner will wear #xxxx-4. Wear bib on front, CLEARLY VISIBLE. A wrist “slap” bracelet will serve as your baton, and should be passed to your teammate at the Exchange Point. The final leg runner must cross the finish line alone, rather than with teammates, to avoid discrepancies in results due to Btags. Finishers medal to all relayers. Final leg runner can pick up the medals for entire team at the finish line.

Marathon Relay Race Route

The marathon relay race route will follow the same as the individual marathon course. Due to construction on the Martin’s Point Bridge, there will be a course change, this year only. Visit http://mainemarathon.com/course-details/ to view the course. Keep in mind that a will start from the same location and at the same time as the marathon. The half marathon runners will split from the marathon (cone turnaround) on Route 88 in Falmouth. Stay on the marathon course, DO NOT FOLLOW THE HALF MARATHON RUNNERS AT THE TURNAROUND ON RTE 88 IN FALMOUTH. A of the route is enclosed, locating the start/finish area and exchange areas 1,2 & 3. KNOW THE COURSE so you don’t have to ask for directions en route. Police reported traffic back-up issues due to this in the past.

Exchange Areas and Exchange Area Parking

It is the responsibility of the team captain and members to find transportation to and from each relay exchange point. Please prearrange this with your team prior to the race. Most roadways will remain open during the race, so travel to the exchange areas should be relatively easy. However, runners will be sharing the roads as well, so we ask that you use EXTREME CAUTION while transporting runners to and from relay exchange points. Baxter Boulevard (the road circling Back Cove covering the first two and last of the race) will be closed to all traffic during the race, so you will not be able to use this road for shuttling relay team members. Look for Feather Banners as you approach each exchange area. Cones will mark the actual exchange points, and volunteers will be at each location to assist runners and record times.
