HISTORICAL GETXO Getxo has a rich historical heritage. Bizkaia Bridge (declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2006) was built at around the same time as the Eiffel Tower, and in a similar style. It is the world’s oldest shuttle bridge. Stately homes of varying sizes and mansion houses, all in different European styles, built by brilliant Basque architects, such as the acclaimed M. Mª Smith, R. Garamendi, E. Amann, F. Iturria or R. Bastida, shape the palatial architecture of the bourgeoisie residences. They feature frequently on the self-guided route known as “The Large Villas Promenade”. Algorta Old Port, with its huddled houses and steeply sloping streets for touring on foot, retains the character of a village devoted to arduous seafaring activities. Visitors can tour its history by reading or listening to the interpretation panels located around the area. In August it holds its fun, bustling, traditional festivities in honour of San Nicolás de Bari. Your visit will also take you to the old lifeboat station, locally known as the “Casa de Náufragos”, the Punta Begoña Galleries, La Galea fort and the Aixerrota windmill, standing in one of the spots offering the best views of the municipality. GETXO MEANS QUALITY Getxo Tourist Information Office works together with local tourism companies in several programmes for competitiveness, product clubs and initiatives which endorse service quality. You will find different symbols acknowledging their commitment to lasting improvement, the use of new technologies or to specialized services. And a special commitment to enabling the offering for people with functional diversities, fostering accessible tourism. To visit Getxo is to enjoy the charm of its contrasts where vestiges of Basque seafaring traditions coexist with the most spectacular mansions. The charm of unique landscapes, open spaces and pedestrian areas with cozy terraces close to its most important tourist attractions. And a wide range of restaurants, bars and shopping areas where visitors can find designer fashions, typical local products and souvenirs to take away with them. GETXO AND CULTURE A broad range of cultural events, including interna- tionally renowned jazz, blues and folk festivals, Indie and alternative pop-rock, the Getxo Sound festival. At the cultural forefront with Muxikebarri-Art, Culture and Conference Centre, which has one of the largest auditoriums in Biscay and the RKE, the innovative cultural centre. Traditional markets offer the best local produce, grown with care on the baserris: Vegetables, fruits, cheeses, patés, bread, cakes, honey, cider, txakolí wine…, as well as organic products. History, culture and tradition are expressed in folklore and dance, ever present in popular celebrations. Every district holds different festivities with their programmes of sports and family and night-time activities, where people come together in a pleasant, friendly atmosphere. Gastronomic and artistic expression merge in one of Getxo’s most important gatherings: The Aixerrota International Paellas Contest. The GetxoPhoto exhibition features original uses of formats, media and space that give a new dimension to image with proposals from photographers and visual narrators from all over the world. Alternative cultural events such as the Comic Show, a must for lovers of this genre internationally and Getxoarte, enhancing contemporary art. GETXO FOR SPORTS In 2014, Getxo received The Best European City of Sport award. This prize acknowledges health improvements through sport in all age groups, the organisation of competitions, promotion schemes, innovation and integration through physical activity and the town’s facilities. A privileged natural setting, ideal for sport and adventure lovers. Its historic bond with the sea makes Getxo a preferred destination for doing water sports. A large number of sailing regattas and championships are held throughout the year. The waves on the Bay of Biscay provide for perfect surfing beaches against the backdrop of their imposing cliff-faces. Beside the sea, it is pleasant to cycle along the bidegorris (cycle lanes), roller in the skate parks, or just to run, all whilst enjoying some incredible views. Diving and horse riding are sports practised in natural environments with a long history in Getxo and which have adapted their offering to novices and elementary level practitioners. Another alternative is to go hiking accompanied by Guides and to learn about the geology of the flysch or the bird species nesting in that habitat. We look forward to seeing you Welcome to Getxo! Typically, salt-influenced deep-water successions are poorly imaged in seismic reflection data, and exhumed systems are rare, hence the detailed sedimentology and stratigraphic architecture of these systems remains poorly understood. The exhumed Triassic (Keuper) Bakio and Guernica salt bodies in the Basque–Cantabrian Basin, Spain, were active during deep-water sedimentation. The salt diapirs grew reactively, then passively, during the Aptian–Albian, and are flanked by deep-water carbonate (Aptian–earliest Albian Urgonian Group) and siliciclastic (middle Albian– Cenomanian Black Flysch Group) successions. The study compares the depositional systems in two salt-influenced minibasins, confined (Sollube basin) and partially confined (Jata basin) by actively growing salt diapirs, comparable to salt-influenced minibasins in the subsurface.

  • Basques in the Americas from 1492 To1892: a Chronology
Basques in the Americas From 1492 to1892: A Chronology “Spanish Conquistador” by Frederic Remington Stephen T. Bass Most Recent Addendum: May 2010 FOREWORD The Basques have been a successful minority for centuries, keeping their unique culture, physiology and language alive and distinct longer than any other Western European population. In addition, outside of the Basque homeland, their efforts in the development of the New World were instrumental in helping make the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America what they are today. Most history books, however, have generally referred to these early Basque adventurers either as Spanish or French. Rarely was the term “Basque” used to identify these pioneers. Recently, interested scholars have been much more definitive in their descriptions of the origins of these Argonauts. They have identified Basque fishermen, sailors, explorers, soldiers of fortune, settlers, clergymen, frontiersmen and politicians who were involved in the discovery and development of the Americas from before Columbus’ first voyage through colonization and beyond. This also includes generations of men and women of Basque descent born in these new lands. As examples, we now know that the first map to ever show the Americas was drawn by a Basque and that the first Thanksgiving meal shared in what was to become the United States was actually done so by Basques 25 years before the Pilgrims. We also now recognize that many familiar cities and features in the New World were named by early Basques. These facts and others are shared on the following pages in a chronological review of some, but by no means all, of the involvement and accomplishments of Basques in the exploration, development and settlement of the Americas.
