Sierra De Guara – Rev 3 8 DAYS / 7 NIGHTS – WALKING - MID SEASON ESB Walking Club Dates: 25th October to 01nd of November 2011 30 to 45 people Tuesday 25th Oct. : ARRIVAL – Join Alquezar Transfer from Barcelona airport to Alquezar by private bus (to match Aer Lingus Dublin-Barcelona morning flight). You can only be charmed by Alquezar, rich cultural heritage village set in stunning natural surroundings. Alquézar is in the province of Huesca, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve. It is the perfect place for sports like canyoning, hiking (more than 1400 m elevation possible), horse riding, and mountain biking. This village also has examples of rock art at the Vero River Cultural Park, designated World Heritage. Also outstanding are its castle, the Santa María la Mayor collegiate church (the region's most visited monument) with its cloister of Romanesque capitals and its organ, along with many shrines. You will stay in the family run hotel "Villa de Alquezar". With Spacious rooms and a lot of character, this hotel is also perfectly located in Alquezar. Dinner in "Meson del Vero" nice Spanish restaurant near the hotel. Wednesday 26th Oct. : WALK – Rio Vero – Meson de Sevil Today to discover the region you will start from the hotel. The first gorges you will encounter is “Rio Vero”, flowing from North to South and through Alquezar. While you will walk up the Rio, the gorges will get very dramatic with huge limestone cliffs and remarkable quartzite rock formations. A very interesting feature of this walk will be to explore the remains of our human ancestors in the form of cave art. The Culture Park of the River Vero, with more than 60 painted caves, contains one of the most extraordinary collections of Prehistoric Cave Art. Here in the Sierra de Guara, in a small geographic area and in a spectacular environment, are gathered all the classic styles of the Prehistoric Iberian Peninsula: Paleolithic, Levantine and Schematic art. 3 levels of walks proposed. Breakfast, Picnic Lunch. Thursday 27th of Oct. : WALK – Rodellar – Gorgas Negras In the morning, short bus transfer to Rodellar and the “Gorgas Negras”. Rodellar is one of the most famous spot in the Europe for Rock climbing and may be you will see one of these spiders species around there today! You will hike from Rodellar Village to the beautiful Mascun Canyon, heart of the Natural Park. This superb area is further enhanced by one of Europe’s greatest vulture colonies. It is possible for the most experienced and fit hiker sto reach Alquezar from Rodellar. 3 levels of walks proposed. For dinner (not included) you can stay in "Meson del Vero" and have the negotiated price dinner (€16) or try one of the 6 restaurants in Alquezar. Breakfast, Picnic Lunch. In this area you will be amazed by rocks shaped by the erosion. From there 3 walks will be proposed, many monasteries around, the Frachinito ridge, Pico de Mondinero and obviously Tozal de Guara. Tozal de Guara is the higest peak of the Sierra 2077m and offers majestic views over this part of the Pyrenees and to the glorious Monte Perdido/Mont Perdu, a UNESCO site located where France meets Spain. Breakfast, Picnic Lunch. Saturday 29th of Oct. : Free Day This week-end is a bank holidays week-end in Spain also (“Todos Santos”) and there will be a good few visitors in Alquezar today. You can then just relax and enjoy Alquezar or take part of an optional activity below. In particular you can visit Barbastro, a rich historic town. There, enjoy a visit of the cathedral (16th century), declared a Historic-Artistic Heritage, which is surrounded by the Archaeological Garden, with valuable artefacts from the 12th-18th centuries. The Diocesan Museum, the Episcopal Palace, the house of Argensola, the City Hall, the church and fountain of San Francisco, the Baselga house (16th century), and the San Julián compound all hold artistic treasures that themselves narrate the history of Barbastro. Breakfast. On option enjoy a day trip to Barbastro: Bus service or Taxi. On option take a tough / Challenging guided hike in the Sierra. On option try Canyoning (descending/abseiling the rivers). On option try Rock climbing or Via Ferrata with an instructor. Sunday 30th of Oct. : WALK – Monte Perdido – Pena Montanesa Early start in morning to discover another majestic part of the Spanish Pyrenees. The “Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido”, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, is the oldest nature reserve in Spain, founded in 1918. It is spectacularly beautiful and offers a number of possibilities, including relatively gentle hikes to full-blown mountain challenging treks. Today you will immerse yourself in incredible landscape: the surrounding mountains, the river at your feet, and the snow-capped grey rock mountains. 3 levels of walks proposed from a gentle walk up to the ascent of Pena Montanesa. Breakfast, Picnic Lunch. Monday 31st of Oct. : WALK – Salto de Rodan / Val de Onsera Today you will discover an old monastery of the XIIth century, the “Ermitage San Martin”. The area of Salto de Roldan is very popular for the bird watchers from all over Europe who want to observe Griffon (unique place in Europe) easy to watch there. 3 Levels of Walk offered. This depends on the type of activity you will choose during the week and if the walks are extended or not. -Moderate: This means it includes light hiking and other activities that require only an moderate level of fitness to enjoy (ie being able to walk 5 hours maximum including breaks on relatively flat ground). -Active: This means it includes hiking and other activities that require only an average level of fitness to enjoy (ie being able to walk 7 hours maximum including breaks). -Challenging: This means it includes hiking and other activities that require a good level of fitness to enjoy (ie 8 hours walk maximum including lunch time and couple of breaks), with around 1000m ascent and 15km of distance minimum. - The accommodation is rated as Comfort: This means all rooms are en suite, the hotel has solid reputation for cleanness and food quality. - France Outdoors reserves the right to cancel a day if the weather does not permit the practice of walking in safe conditions. La iniciativa se contextualiza en el marco de la estrategia glo- bal de desarrollo territorial comarcal, que contempla el patrimonio cultural como un factor de desarrollo, aunando su protección con la creación de un producto de turis- mo cultural. Se inserta asimismo en la aplicación de programas europeos innovado- res, en la interrelación con redes de cooperación y en la implantación de novedosas figuras de gestión como el Parque Cultural del Río Vero.     Somontano de Barbastro La personalidad de la sierra de Guara Aragón Modesto Pascau Canales Gerente de prames La comarca del Somontano de Barbastro se sitúa en la mitad oriental de la provincia de Huesca. Son tierras domi- nadas por el perfi l abrupto de la sierra de Guara, al norte, un territorio intrincado y emocionante. Desde estas es- tribaciones prepirenaicas surge hacia el sur un piedemon- te alomado, que comunica la montaña con los llanos de la depresión del Ebro y que es, propiamente, un somontano. Este es un paisaje suave en el que se suceden carrascales –nombre que habitualmente se emplea en Aragón para re- ferirse a los encinares–, campos de cereal, huertas y viñedos, salpicado de pueblos y de una ciudad con solera, Barbastro. La capital vive un constante trasiego comercial y es uno de los referentes de la cultura aragonesa, con eventos a lo largo de todo el año. Sin apenas caminos, con los campos cubiertos de aliagas, con una landa de matorral creciente sin controlar por el diente de los rebaños, elfuego no encuentra barreras y arrasa porigual viejos encinares y robledales que recientes repoblaciones. Lastortuosas pistas, las espectaculares gargantas atraen a millones de turistas, a cientos de vehiculos todo terreno, y cuanto más se desvela la dura belleza de esta sierra.

Introduction This chapter is a descriptive analysis of tourism in Aragon, as a study case of an interior Spanish touristic region. The study shows the tourism profile in Aragon, showing that are some needs in tourism promotion as well as a description presented with latest data that shows the huge amount of natural and cultural/historical resources that can be exploited to improve the actual economy of this Spanish region. Methodologically, this research is based on primary data by means of a survey to tourists visiting Aragon in 2009, as well as all the secondary literature that are referenced. This study is an approach to the theoretical framework of the “sustainability paradigm” where economic, social and environmental aspects are considered. 2.
