Place Attachment, Place Identity and Tourism in Jimbaran and Kuta, Bali Luh Micke Anggraini Thesis submitted to fulfil the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute for Culture and Society University of Western Sydney July 2015 This thesis is dedicated to Bali and the Balinese people, and to the geographically bounded communities whose places have been exposed to tourism ii Acknowledgements Praise Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa the Creator, the Universe, and the Sacred Spirits. Many people have made this study possible. One person who has been pivotal is my husband Gde Prasetiawan, for enriching my life in many ways, providing the opportunity for me to advance my knowledge by giving his kind agreement to undertake further education overseas (noting that this chance rarely happens to a married woman within a Balinese family). The journey that has brought me to this point began in 2006 when I studied my Masters in Tourism Planning at the University of Western Sydney lectured by Associate Professor Robyn Bushell, who is now also my Principal PhD Supervisor. Since then I developed much interest in the field of tourism planning, as this subject is also an important issue in tourism development in Bali and Indonesia. Robyn encouraged and supported me in the Australian Development Scholarship (Australia Awards Scholarship) application to undertake the PhD program in 2010, and eventually this scholarship brought me back to Australia. Her role in directing me to the research topic on values-based approach to tourism planning is significant, and I would say that this thesis was very much inspired by her scholarly works.

One of the most visible media of communication in Kuta is in the form of out-door sign. Out-door sign is considered to be the most effective mass media communication and the study is known as Linguistic Landscapes. The focus of this study is to investigate the glocalization of Balinese language as a medium of communication in Kuta especially, on out-door signs. The data of this study were collected by taking pictures of all out-door signs in Kuta area, such as Raya Kuta St., Kartika Plaza St., Pantai Kuta St., and Legian St.. The data were classified into two main types: commercial signs and non-commercial signs. The analysis started with identification of the language use and followed by a combination of language use in all signs. The finding shows that Balinese language is only used in 43 signs out of 1132 signs. Furthermore, from the 43 signs, there are only 22 using pure Balinese, 19 signs using Indonesian with Balinese Letters, and 2 signs using a combination of Balinese and Indonesian. The conclusion of the study is that the glocalization of Balinese language is not yet achieved; in fact, Balinese language is marginalized in Bali as out-door signs.

The purpose of this study was to determine the mobility behavior indicated by the mobility intensity of migrants from Java as well as to prove its relationship with the variables of distance, length of stay, economic conditions, and migrant marital status. To achieve this objective, this study used a survey design with the research subjects being migrants from Java in South Kuta who were taken using snowball sampling techniques. The results obtained were the mobility behavior indicated by the intensity of the mobility was very varied and categorized as very strong, the lowest was once a year and the highest reached ten times as far as he knew. Mobility intensity is negatively related (-0.259) and significant at the 1% level (0.009 <0.01) with the distance variable, negatively related (-0.268) and significant at the 1% level (0.007 <0.01) with the length of stay variable, positive correlation (0.508) and significant at the level of 1% (0.000 <0.01) with variable economic conditions, and does not have a significant relationship with the marital status variable of migrants with a correlation value of -0.156 (conversion to a t value of -1.560 is more small from the t table value of 1.987) and a significance value of 0.122 This finding contributed to the development of mobility theories and has implications for input in the formulation of population policy planning.
