“The Reporter” – Page 4 An Answer to the Question: What can a little Chapter Do? By Ann Pieper, Justice, Dooley Chapter, Northern Illinois University. Dooley is a small chapter from Northern Illinois University. As we are at a small law school with a very strong rival fraternity presence, we sometimes are at a loss on what we can do to make a difference with our limited budget and membership. A few years ago our chapter decided to do a large community service project with our time and money – and it is something we love to do, the entire School of Law appreciates, and that does our fraternity proud. Each year, Phi Alpha Delta does a “Giving Tree” during the holiday season to provide gifts for the homeless children satying in a facility called “Hope Haven” here in DeKalb, Illinois. Hope Haven is a shelter whose main purpose is to transition unemployed homeless families to working families. The facility takes families with children and provides day care and housing while the moms and/or dads earn their GED’s, further education, and new jobs. When the residents of Hope Haven can afford to leave, it is with a job and a community of support. The shelter has been extremely successful in these efforts. For the Giving Tree, the Hope Haven children’s programming director provides our chapter with a list of wants from the children. We take these wishes and turn them into construction paper hands that list the age of the child, the child’s sex, and their wish. Many times the wishes are for things like socks, underwear, winter coats, and jeans, but there are also fun wishes for things like perfume, toys, books and earrings. As a result, there is plenty of variety for every possible shopper. We place our construction paper “wishes” onto a little Christmas tree set up in the Student Common Area where all the students and faculty at the Law School can take the hands and bring back the best gifts for these kids. When all the gifts come in we make sure that all of the kids have equal gifts, and if they don’t, we provide them! Because of Phi Alpha Delta, many parents who have nothing to give their kids during the holiday season can give a gift to their child. This year the Dooley Chapter, helped facilitate a process that provided over 150 gifts to the homeless children of DeKalb. We are honored to do it every year, the students and faculty at Northern love to participate and we are proud to explain how a little chapter can make a big difference in service to their Community!

The Fletcher Chapter at the University of Florida started the year off by initiating 11 new members, which, for our newly invigorated chapter, was an important step forward, increasing our membership by nearly 200%! In October, we started a new fundraising tradition, Halloween Candygrams. Everyone remembers these from high school; little bags of candy with notes from the person who sent them to you. We brought this tradition to UF, and had so much success with it that we started selling Valentine’s Day Candygrams in February! Thanks to our new Professional Activities Chair, Emily Banks, we are participating in a local rural outreach project through Three Rivers, to bring legal advice to the rural poor. After bringing a speaker to campus to discuss the program last fall, the project is getting underway in Spring 2008. Our Service Chair is currently planning several events for us as well including serving supper to the homeless at St. Francis House and working with a local animal adoption center to find loving homes for unwanted puppies. Our new social and membership chairs planned a night on the town for members and nonmembers. It was a low-key affair at Chili’s but it was well attended by members and nonmembers alike! We look forward to a great 2008 and beyond!

The food went to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and a total of 270 food items came in over the course of three days. Thanks to the students, faculty and staff at Chicago-Kent, we were able to crush our friendly food rivals at John Marshall, who collected 195 items. Engle Chapter Re-Emerges By Mariel Covarrubias, Clerk The Clair Engle Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta was founded on May 13, 1911 at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. After several years of inactivity, 16 students—under the leadership of Justice Jared Stephenson, former member of the Pre-Law Chapter at California State University, Sacramento—have united to reactivate the Engle Chapter. Located in Sacramento, the capital of California, the Engle Chapter will provide students of law unprecedented opportunity to immerse themselves in the legal community. Having officially formed on paper, we now seek to firmly establish ourselves in the school and in the community with our spring semester culminating events: a Campus Social with McGeorge students and faculty; a Community service event at Habitat for Humanity, to take place on February 23, 2008; and chapter social and team building events. The members of the reactivated Engle chapter are setting the groundwork that will entice involvement in P.A.D. Recruitment for new members will begin this semester, but will become a priority with the start of the fall 2008 term. We are proud to be back and are working hard to make P.A.D. a firm establishment on the McGeorge campus.

“The Reporter” – Page 15 P.A.D. Reaches Out to Appalachia The Sutin Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta from the Appalachian School of Law (ASL) dedicates the 2007-2008 academic year to reaching out and serving the community of Grundy, Virginia. To kick-off the fall semester, P.A.D. members co-organized and sponsored a Katrina Panel with the Sutin Public Interest Association last September. Sitting on the information panel were two ASL professors, and Sharon Hanshaw, Executive Director of Coastal Women for Change, a grass roots initiative formed in Biloxi, Mississippi, to provide women a forum to voice their concerns about the direction and future of their post Hurricane Katrina communities. The panel informed the local community, ASL faculty and students of the current legal and reconstructive need in the Gulf region and neighboring Katrina-stricken neighborhoods. Attendants also learned of the many avenues in which they may pursue in order to volunteer and help alleviate the crisis of Katrina’s aftermath. A meet-and-greet reception after the panel allowed attendants to offer follow-up questions and comments. To complete the event, a P.A.D. member provided a dinner for the panelists and ASL students later that evening. A month later, the Sutin Chapter held its 5th annual Halloween Carnival. All children from the Grundy community, ASL faculty and students were invited. Approximately 350-400 children visited ASL’s courtyard to experience a safe and fun Halloween with decorations and music to set the mood, and both the children and P.A.D. volunteers in costume. Face-painting, prizes, cupcakes and candy were offered throughout the night. Every child left the carnival with prizes, a bag full of candy, and a smile on their face. Members of the Sutin Chapter returned after winter break in January to gear up for another enjoyable and service-oriented semester. The Sutin Chapter hosted a Mardi Gras welcome back party for ASL students to jumpstart the spring semester. Currently, the Chapter is in its preliminary stages of planning its legendary Spring Luau, which will coincide with a canned food drive. We invite P.A.D. Members to attend. It is a great event that builds a wonderful rapport within our law school community. To further the academic and professional service aspects of P.A.D., the Sutin chapter plans to sponsor a luncheon later this semester where our Associate Dean will present a seminar focused on proper client interview skills to prepare students for their upcoming summer clerkships.
