Administrative history / Biographical sketch Note Eugenio Florit (1903-1999) was a well-known poet, essayist, lecturer, composer, diplomat, academic, actor, “man of three homelands,” and traveler. He was born October 15, 1903, in the northern section of Salamanca, Spain. He was the son of Don Ricardo Florit, a Spaniard, and Doña Mariá Sanchez de Fuentes, a Cuban. From the ages of two to six he grew up in Barcelona. Until the age of 15 he lived in Port-Bou, a city on the Mediterranean coast near France. In 1918 Florit immigrated to Havana where he continued his studies, graduating from the University of Havana with a degree in civil and public law. In 1927 he began working for the Secretary of State and took on a role with the Revista de Avance, where he became known as a poet. He also worked as a radio personality and acted occasionally in theater troupes. In 1936, he met Juan R. Jimenez, who wrote the prologue to one of Florit’s most important books of verses, <a>Doble acento</a>, and with whom he maintained a friendship until Jimenez’s death. In 1940 Florit went to work at the Cuban Consulate. He continued to live in New York until 1982, and it was the setting for almost all of his work as an essayist, literary critic, and translator. In 1945 after receiving a teaching position at Barnard College, he left his diplomatic post. He also taught at Columbia’s University of Miami Cuban Heritage Collection Page 3 CHC5040 Eugenio Florit Papers graduate school and at the intensive language school at Middlebury College in Vermont during the summer. There, he met poets such as Jorge Guillén, Pedro Salinas, and Luis Cernuda. Florit was a collaborator on Repertorio Americano, Revista Avance, Lyceum, Revista Cubana, Origénes, and Revista Hispaníca Moderna, which he co-edited with Don Frederico Onis and Angel del Río until 1962, when he assumed total direction of the magazine. During the 1950s he traveled to Europe and Latin America, and his last trip to Cuba was in 1959. He retired from his teaching position at Barnard in 1969, but continued living in New York and occupied himself with other obligations until moving to Miami in 1982. In 1991 he was one of the candidates for the Premio Cervantes, awarded by the North American Academy of Spanish Language. The same year he received the Premio Fray Luis de León from the University of Salamanca, and the Premio Mitre from the Hispanic Society of America in New York. Florit published his last work entitled Hasta luego in 1992. At the age of 96, Florit died on June 22, 1999. He was a mentor and guide for many generations and is considered among the greatest Hispanic-American poets. Scope and content This collection consists of documents, books, and other materials written and collected by Cuban poet and writer Eugenio Florit. Materials include personal correspondence, along with professional correspondence pertaining to his work as a writer, translator, and professor at both Columbia University and Middlebury College. It also includes published and unpublished works by Florit, clippings of newspaper articles by and about Florit, and research notes. Travel is a recurring theme in Florit’s work, and this is visible in the abundant slides he has of his travels, and the travel diaries he kept.     Manuel Ruano: “Rilke suena en mis oídos como un violín desvelado” Entrevista realizada por Rolando Revagliatti Manuel Ruano nació el 15 de enero de 1943 en el barrio Saavedra, de Buenos Aires (ciudad en la que reside), la Argentina. Habiendo realizado estudios sobre literatura española, se especializó en Siglo de Oro Español. Es profesor honorario en la Universidad Nacional de San Marcos y en la Universidad Nacional San Martín de Porres, de Lima, Perú, donde en 1992 fundó la revista de poesía latinoamericana “Quevedo”.     Klaus Meyer-Minnemann / Sergio Vergara Alarcón LA REVISTA MANDRAGORA-, VANGUARDISMO Y CONTEXTO CHILENO EN 1938 En lo siguiente nos proponemos analizar la revista Mandrágora y el proyecto literario y vital relacionado a ella, con respecto al contexto nacional chileno a finales de la década de los treinta. Presentaremos primero el contenido de la revista y las aspiraciones que subyacen a sus proclamas y realizaciones, estableciendo los vínculos con el van­ guardismo literario y artístico internacional de la época que Mandrágora evidencia y hasta reivindica. Luego trataremos de ubicar­ la en el contexto nacional para determinar su lugar literario, político y social en el entorno específico de entonces. Cabe señalar, sin embargo, que nuestro intento no pretende ser exhaustivo ya que por razones de espacio y de documentación tiene que prescindir de un estudio pormenorizado de la totalidad de los textos que se escribieron en y alrededor de la revista. Mandrágora aparece en siete números entre 1938 y 1943 en San­ tiago de Chile1. El primer número se publica en diciembre de 1938 con el subtítulo de "Poesía Filosofía Pintura Ciencia Documentos". Como comité directivo firman Braulio Arenas, Teófilo Cid y Enrique Gómez-Correa. Los números siguientes aparecen sin subtítulo ni mención de comité directivo. El segundo número que pasa del tamaño carta del primero a un formato tabloide, sale a luz en diciembre de 1939. El tercero, de junio de 1940, vuelve al formato anterior, el cual se mantiene para el cuarto número de julio de 1940, el quinto, de junio de 1941 y el sexto, de septiembre de 1941.

    SPRING 1977 81 Book Review Essay Horcasitas, Fernando: El teatro náhuatl: épocas novohispana y moderna, t.1, México, UNAM: Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas, Serie de Cultura Náhuatl (Monografías, 17), 1974 (1975), 647 p. Prólogo de Miguel Léon- Portilla; 21 ilustraciones. "El que intente tener una visión general del teatro indígena en mexicano," nos previene la Advertencia, "pronto se dará cuenta de que la dispersión de datos y textos es pavorosa" (p. 13). Gracias a la labor de Horcasitas, el interesado en estas materias ahora podrá gozar de una visión general del teatro indígena en mexicano bastante más apacible, bastante menos dramática. En El teatro náhuatl pueden distinguirse tres partes: la parte teórica, contenida en la Advertencia y en el Estudio Preliminar; la que llama el autor un poco paradójicamente "compilación" o "antología" dramática, y el aparato crítico de la obra, constituido por las referencias dentro del texto, la Bibliografía y el índice Geográfico y Onomástico. Manifestando la impresión que le causa la trabazón de estas partes, dice el prologuista: "Bien lograda se nos muestra la estructura de la presente obra" (p. 7). Las tres serán objeto de un breve comen­ tario en el correr de estas páginas. En lo que toca a la parte teórica pueden observarse, a su vez, otras tres sec­ ciones: una, que se refiere al criterio con que se dividieron los textos de la "compilación antológica"; otra, que examina sus antecedentes históricos, y otra, que puede ser la más importante, la teórica propiamente dicha. Lo que puede desorientar un poco al lector es que Horcasitas no ha observado un método expositivo muy consecuente y, en ese sentido, es difícil decir que esta parte esté "bien estructurada." Lo que concierne al criterio con que se dividieron las piezas podrá encontrarse en la Advertencia.

En su presentación, el autor se refiere a la consolidación de “una poesía diurna”, que tiene entre sus hitos fundacionales la publicación de la Antología de ocho nuevos poetas chilenos (1939). Parra sostiene que el trabajo de estos poetas se caracteriza por una mayor claridad conceptual y formal, lo que conlleva la inclusión de un lector masi- vo y menos entrenado al escenario poético. Esto representa un quiebre en la “tradición hermética” de la poesía chilena, pero al mismo tiempo ejerce una suerte de complemen- to al modelo lírico ya existente.
