UBBS - Native plant species in western Sydney Native Plant Species Recorded in Western Sydney A complete listing of native plant taxa recorded for western Sydney including distributional records for 12 local government areas, compiled from existing plant species lists, UBBS field surveys, herbarium records and the listing prepared by Benson & McDougall (1991). Over 250 plant species lists have been used in the compilation, however, it is not an exhaustive coverage. For each plant taxon the list provides a record of the number of sites recorded for each of the twelve local government areas. The number of NPWS conservation reserves in which each species is represented is also provided (see key for explanation of coding). Based on this information the conservation status of each species is assessed. Taxa occurring in 3 or more reserves are considered to be conserved (C) and those in less than 3 reserves are identified as vulnerable (V) in western Sydney. Due to the limited distribution of sandstone habitats within the study area and the existence of several conservation reserves in surrounding plateaus, however, sandstone species are considered to be adequately conserved within western Sydney if present in two or more reserves. References are provided for the records on an LGA basis. The lists provide a “snap shot” of the present state of our knowledge concerning the distribution and conservation significance of native plant species in western Sydney, and provides a sound basis for regional and local biodiversity conservation management. It is important, however, that new records and information continue to be fed into the system and the lists updated accordingly to progressively improve our knowledge base. As more records are incorporated it is expected that the number of regionally significant (REG) taxa (those qualifying due to rarity criteria) will decline. Considering the size of western Sydney and i UBBS - Native plant species in western Sydney the current levels of development, however, there is a strong argument for raising the level of rarity from 5 to 10. There is inevitably a bias towards greater representation of trees and shrubs in most species lists available as they are both more visible and easier to identify. In contrast grasses, sedges, rushes, orchids and smaller herbs are more cryptic and identification considerably more difficult. Such a bias will result in a poorer understanding of the distribution and conservation significance of these taxa. A large proportion of the sedges and rushes, for example, are rated as being regionally significant (REG) and rare in the region. Although this will partly reflect the scarcity of wetland and riparian habitats, it also indicates a lack of identification skills in the field. To help compensate for this bias in the present study a greater effort was made to check and incorporate herbarium records for these particular groups. ii UBBS - Native plant species in western Sydney Botanical name Family Auburn Bankstown Hills Baulkham Blacktown Camden Campbeltown Fairfield Hawkesbury Holroyd Liverpool Parramatta Penrith Conservation Reserves Conservation Status Abrophyllum ornans ESCALLONIACEAE 2 1 V Abutilon oxycarpum MALVACEAE 1 1 1 3 1 V Acacia binervata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 2 1 1 V Acacia binervia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 7 7 13131213S B Ca Mi C Wf Bm Acacia brownii FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 3134 2141225G S A Cs Mi C Bm Acacia bynoeana FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 7 1 7 Cs A V Acacia decurrens FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 8452551126104G Cs BC Acacia echinula FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 V Acacia elata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 2 1 1 B V Acacia elongata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 311210M,Cs A B W C Bm Acacia falcata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 8491067836810G S Mi,B Ca C Cs M W Bm Acacia falciformis FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 B V Acacia filicifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 B V Acacia fimbriata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 4 B M V Acacia floribunda FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 3 1 10 5758 457S A B Ca M C Mi Acacia gordonii FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 2 V Acacia hispidula FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 8 2 1 1 Bm V Acacia implexa FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 346136921264G Ca M WfC Acacia irrorata subsp. irrorata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 2 V Acacia juncifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 V Acacia leiocalyx FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 2 1 2 S V Acacia linifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 8 1 2 2 131G Mi BmC Acacia longifolia var. longifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 8 10+ 9 1426 181G S V Acacia longissima FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 4 1 3 1 V Acacia lunata (A. buxifolia) FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 7 1 1 Cs V Acacia maidenii FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 4 2 G V Acacia mearnsii FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 B V Acacia melanoxylon FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 V Acacia myrtifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 4 7 6 1 1 G V Acacia obtusifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 2 1112BmV Acacia oxycedrus FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 V Acacia paradoxa FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 V Page 1 UBBS - Native plant species in western Sydney Botanical name Family Auburn Bankstown Hills Baulkham Blacktown Camden Campbeltown Fairfield Hawkesbury Holroyd Liverpool Parramatta Penrith Conservation Reserves Conservation Status Acacia parramattensis FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 9 4 16 11 4 4 13 15 57811G S W A B C Ca Cs M Mi Wf Acacia parvipinnula FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 5 1 2 2 3 Cs M V Acacia penninervis FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 1 V Acacia prominens FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 2 G M V Acacia pubescens FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 10 26 3 1 1 9 10 5 8 2 S V Acacia rubida FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 2 1 V Acacia stricta FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 2 2 4 1 2 V Acacia suaveolens FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 3 1 5 4 2 121G B Mi Bm C Wf Acacia terminalis FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 1 5 5122G B MC Acacia trinervata FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 3 V Acacia ulicifolia FABACEAE-Mimosoideae 3 1 12 21736 355G W A B Cs C Mi Bm Wf Acianthus exsertus ORCHIDACEAE 1 2 1 1 Bm V Acianthus fornicatus ORCHIDACEAE 6 3 1 1 1 Bm V Acmena smithii MYRTACEAE 2 6 2 8 3 1 Ca Mi Bm C Acronychia oblongifolia RUTACEAE 1 1 3 Mi V Acrotriche aggregata EPACRIDACEAE 1 1 V Acrotriche divaricata EPACRIDACEAE 2 2211BV Actinotus helianthi APIACEAE 1 5 2 1 1 1 G Mi Bm C Actinotus minor APIACEAE 1 4 4 3 G V Adiantum aethiopicum ADIANTACEAE 2 2 13 48313675G W Ca M C Mi B Adiantum formosum ADIANTACEAE 2 4 V Adiantum hispidulum ADIANTACEAE 9 3 3 1 1 2 Ca B Bm C Adiantum silvaticum ADIANTACEAE 1 V Adriana tomentosa var. tomentosa EUPHORBIACEAE 1 V Aegiceras corniculata MYRSINACEAE 2 13 1 G V Agrostis aemula POACEAE 2 2 2 2 1 V Ajuga australis LAMIACEAE 14123425 2S W CaC Alchornea ilicifolia EUPHORBIACEAE 1 1 V Alectryon subcinereus SAPINDACEAE 3 3117 1 Ca MiV Alisma plantago-aquatica ALISMATACEAE 4 1 1 132221S Mi V Allocasuarina diminuta ssp. mimica CASUARINACEAE 1 V Allocasuarina distyla CASUARINACEAE 1 2 1 1 G Cs C Allocasuarina glareicola CASUARINACEAE 1 11 Cs V Page 2 UBBS - Native plant species in western Sydney Botanical name Family Auburn Bankstown Hills Baulkham Blacktown Camden Campbeltown Fairfield Hawkesbury Holroyd Liverpool Parramatta Penrith Conservation Reserves Conservation Status Allocasuarina littoralis CASUARINACEAE 22961837 9310G S W A B C Cs M Mi Allocasuarina torulosa CASUARINACEAE 2 11 3 2 3 171S B MiC Alocasia brisbanensis ARACEAE 1 1 V Alphitonia excelsa RHAMNACEAE 2 6 1 7 6 1 Ca Mi V Alternanthera denticulata AMARANTHACEAE 11431 462376G S B M MiC Alternanthera nana AMARANTHACEAE 2 V Alternanthera sp.
