(It does not include any children’s output on other commercial generalist non-terrestrial channels, such as GMTV,ABC1, Sky One.) • This output analysis examines the genre range within children’s programming and looks at how this range has changed since 2003. It is based on the BARB Children’s genre classification only and uses the BARB subgenres of Children’s Drama, Factual, Cartoons, Light entertainment/quizzes, Pre-school and Miscellaneous. • It is important to note that the BARB genre classifications have some drawbacks: – All programme output that is targeted at children is not classified as Children’s within BARB. Some shows targeted at younger viewers, either within children’s slots on the PSB main channels or on the dedicated children’s channels are not classified as Children’s. A publication for Northwestern College alumni & friends • Fall 2005 President’sreport Northwestern Classic A New Way to Do College? “Is there some problem within higher education that Northwestern can solve—some need Northwestern can address to make a difference?” The question came from a good friend of the college, a renowned business executive and Christian leader. We were discussing Northwestern’s plans for the future and its calling as a Christian institution. I thought for a moment and then shared a concern I have had for years. It has seemed to me and a growing number of others in higher education that over the last generation Dr. Bruce Murphy or so, we in the education world have come to define “quality” mainly in terms of “quantity.” We have President encouraged students to add a minor or a second major to their schedule, assuming more credits equals more learning. Similar to any educational context, the transfer of knowledge in children TV shows is informed by three prominent psychological theories: behaviourism, cognitivism, and sociocultural theory. Much research about learning in children TV shows utilise psychological methods and theory that, for the most part, ignore the role of language as a discourse strategy and a semiotic resource that interact with learning. An episode of the children TV show Team Umizoomi, titled The Elephant Sprinkler, was selected as a point of departure to understand the relationship between communicative resources such as discourse strategies and semiotic sign system, on the one hand, and learning within the framework of three major psychological learning theories, on the other hand. Discourse analytical methods were used to process and analyse data. Results suggest that the episode heavily utilises discourse strategies and also the Peircean sign system theory that relates to sociocultural theory of learning. This research may be useful for scholars from diverse academic and professional areas that aim at education.
