    123 Jimmy Dean Smith Hillbillies Emerge from the Woods: An Unsociological Moment* in John Sayles’s Matewan by Jimmy Dean Smith John Sayles’s 1987 film Matewan depicts a signal event in labor, social, and Ap- palachian history and thus the viewer feels the gravitational pull and satisfaction of a familiar trope—the myth enbodied in a familiar liberal morality tale. The movie can and does do good, but it resists that impulse at the same time. Good is not all it does, since Sayles takes a worthwhile chance on alienating his core audience. While the aesthetic precepts of social justice often limit the range of approaches an engaged but bourgeois artist can bring to politically and socially charged material, Sayles offers a scenario that toys with liberal good taste and questions whether politics that assumes a pre-fabricated response has the guts to recognize the tantalizing power of subversive mythology. Here are “the bare bones of the history [Sayles] started with” (Sayles 16): In 1920 the minefields in eastern Kentucky and southwestern West Virginia are totally nonunion . The United Mine Workers . target . several counties to be organized. The mine owners . hold Mingo and Logan counties in West Virginia in a military grip—controlling political officials and police, posting armed guards . sending spies into the midst of the miners and creating a “judicious mixture” of native miners, blacks and recent immigrants who they believe can never rise above their basic differences to resist collectively. A strike begins near the town of Matewan . The mayor and chief of police of the town, Cabell Testerman and Sid Hatfield, refuse a bribe offered by agents from the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, which functions as the enforcing arm of the state’s coal operators.

    Lesson 7: The Battles of Matewan and Blair Mountain Objectives: ● In this lesson, the students will develop an understanding of the underlying causes of the Battles of Matewan and Blair Mountain. ● In an interactive role-play with maps and historic accounts, students will be interjected into making a tough decision: should they join the march on Blair Mountain or sit it out? Students will weigh the options. Materials Needed: ● Historical background student handout ● Guiding questions student handout Activity 1: Warm Up (Synchronous) Distribute the handout with the background on the story of the Battle of ​ Matewan and the murder of Sid Hatfield. Ask students to read it, silently, and think about how they would react if they were the miners and their families at Paint Creek and Cabin Creek. Having role-played these characters in previous lessons, encourage them to put themselves in the participants’ shoes in thinking about how they might feel during this event. (Asynchronous) Distribute the handout with the background on the story of the Battle of ​ Matewan and the murder of Sid Hatfield.     February 2020 Screenings – UCLA Film & Television Archive Presents John Sayles: Independent, Archive Treasures, and Sontag, From the Archive FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LOS ANGELES (Jan. 17, 2020) – UCLA Film & Television Archive is pleased to present its February programs. Including the longest running series this month in honor of the godfather of American independent cinema, John Sayles; hosted by the American Cinematheque and the Archive with Sayles attending the first five screenings for conversations and to sign copies of his new novel, Yellow Earth. On Feb. 7, the Archive will present a new 2K restoration of Susan Sontag’s directorial debut, Duet for Cannibals (1969). In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sontag’s premiere filmmaking effort, the Archive is joining with UCLA Library Special Collections to present highlights from the Susan Sontag Papers, a collection of professional and personal correspondence that will be in display in the lobby of the Billy Wilder Theater before the screening. Archive Treasures showcases works from UCLA Film & Television Archive’s extensive holdings, which comprise one of the largest moving image collections in the world. Included in this series will be deserving and rarely screened gems. Lastly, the Archive Treasures program, which presents rarely screened gems in original and restored format, returns on Feb. 23 with a screening of two rare videotape television productions from the late 1960s and early ‘70s examining social issues facing African American and Chicanx communities.     The Retrieval of Labour History in the United States: Areviewoftwo recent films on theclass war in the West Virginia coal fields Errol Black and Joe Dolecki IN A RECENT ARTICLE in Monthly Labour Review, Roy Rosenzweig observes that: Within the universities, the field of labour history it flourishing as never before. Hnt-nte scholarly books and articles issue forth regularly from the univerritypreaKf—Yet, as even an «systematic survey shows, popular presentations of labour history.«aie much more difficult to find. He goes on to suggest that this ghettoization, this failure to make labour history accessible to the people of the United States, is attributable to "...a general conspiracy of silence..." which is reflected in the limited coverage of labour history in the contents of popular history publications; the dearth of museums, or even exhibits in museums, which focus on the development of the labour movement and the great struggles of working people; the neglect and bias in the treatment of labour history and labour issues in the text books used in high schools; and the failure of Hollywood and the cinematographic popular arts to recognize the significant role which the labour movement and class conflict have played in shaping the character of American society. It is this latter issue of labour and the movies which is of interest to us here. Rosenzweig asks the question: "How many Hollywood movies have depicted great labour conflicts or the stories of labour leaders?" I Quests for Healing and Identity in the Fiction and Films of John Sayles A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Clare Elizabeth Peacock II Abstract Quests for Healing and Identity in the Fiction and Films of John Sayles John Sayles, writer and independent filmmaker, is, first and foremost a storyteller. The "stories" in his fiction and films tell of individuals trying to come to terms with personal and/or political issues and often lead their protagonists on journeys or quests in search of healing and identity. These quests frequently involve characters returning to places either from the past, or to the source of the trauma in order to understand and deal with the present. Budde Department of Catholic Studies Office: 570 SAC [email protected] (773) 325-1974 Office Hours: M 3-6 p.m. and by appointment Course Description: The work of John Sayles, among the best known of American independent filmmakers, has ranged across many important and controversial issues – race, economic exploitation, ethnicity, sexuality and more. While the political significance of his films is often acknowledged, his work is also suffused with religious and spiritual symbols and insights he attributes in part to his Catholic heritage (he once described himself as a “Roman Catholic Atheist”). He has received several Academy Award nominations, and received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 1983. Sayles’ work – and how he does it – also provides insights into the conditions of cultural production and artistic freedom in an era of large-scale corporate culture industries (e.g., Time- Warner, Disney, Fox). Unlike most filmmakers, Sayles works free of studio control and oversight – he provides much of the money for his films through his work as a high-priced “script doctor” for the studios (his uncredited scripts include Apollo 13, Mimic, and many others). Sayles’ better-known films, which he has written and directed, include Eight Men Out, Lone Star, Men With Guns, Matewan, and Passion Fish. This course will explore the interplay of politics, commerce, spirituality and culture in Sayles’ work. We will watch many of Sayles’ films in their entirety, discuss and debate issues raised in them, and use Sayles’ experience as a way to investigate larger questions regarding corporate control of cultural production, the social and political significance of independent storytelling, and the ambiguous location of religion (and Catholicism in particular) in contemporary culture industries.

  • Politics and the West Virginia Miners, 1900–1922
    "Citizens of this Great Republic": Politics and the West Virginia Miners, 1900-19221 ROGER FAGGE Summary: The West Virginia Miners engaged in remarkable inter-ethnic rebellions in the early twentieth century, against the "feudal" conditions in the Mountain State's coalfields. This paper challenges the view that these actions were backed by an equally radical and class-conscious language based on Americanism. It shows how due to various barriers, ranging from ethnic differences to electoral interference, political involvement on the part of the miners was sporadic and unsuccessful, and they were unable to form a common, coherent political identity. Instead they articulated a broad and ultimately ambiguous appeal to "American" rights and values, which focused on the exceptionalism of West Virginia, and took the interpretation of Americanism to be self-evident. In John Sayles' remarkable film Matewan >2 the divergent workforce of the post-war southern West Virginia coalfields, made up of black American, immigrant and white American miners, overcome their differences and confront the brutal coal operators and their hired gunmen. Thrown together in tent colonies, forced to share the hardships of the strike, they learn to eat together, play music together and, through their experience of struggle, fight together. Given the usual picture of inter-race relations in the US, and particu- larly the south, in this period, it might be tempting to think that such a picture had more to do with the director's wishful thinking than the historical reality. President Adam Falk's introduction of John was glowing and personal, and follows below: On behalf of our program in American Studies, I’m thrilled to introduce John Sayles, who will present his novel A Moment in the Sun and his film Amigo. These works suggest important new directions in American Studies. As we work towards highlighting and advancing our teaching in this field, and in Asian-American studies as well, we’re actively looking at examples of work that builds on the civil rights legacies and social justice work upon which the field was founded. We’re very excited to have this chance to encounter Sayles’ works, which are at the forefront of transnational thinking in this important discipline, and which can help us reflect on the effects of U.S. empire, both historically and in the present. Introduction This collection of artifacts from the John Sayles Archive together with the interpretive exhibit in the Gallery provide a glimpse into the life and work of this author, screenwriter, and famously independent filmmaker. The Sayles Archive comprises more than 200 boxes and documents his life and work from his 1950s boyhood through the 2013 release of Go for Sisters. His lifelong personal and professional partner Maggie Renzi is a constant presence in the Archive, represented in personal notebooks, journals, and correspondence, as well as production-related documents. This Archive joins those of Orson Welles and Robert Altman in our American Film Mavericks at Michigan Collection that has proven to be a rich source of primary materials for students and researchers. The artifacts exhibited here only hint at the depth of these extensive archives and their potential to illuminate both the history of filmmaking and the working methods and creative processes of these enormously influential artists.
