[email protected] Abstract An investigation has been undertaken at Lyall Bay in Wellington to propose options with regard to protecting the natural and built coastal infrastructure and reinstating a functional dune. Lyall Bay is an important recreational asset for Wellington as it is popular with the community for many activities both in the water and on the beach, as well as scenic drives, visiting cafes, and plane watching with the nearby airport. The project has specifically included investigating options for 1) dune restoration to maximize their effectiveness in absorbing wave energy and protecting natural and built infrastructure 2) protect the rocky shoreline, grassed area and trees on the western side of the bay 3) the shifting of sand around the bay and dealing with current infrastructure within the beach environment. Lyall Bay is a highly modified beach environment that has been developed since early last century, leading to a number of constraints and changes when coastal processes are considered. The dune field has been replaced with people/houses/buildings; the bay has been contained within walls, roads and parking; stormwater discharges into the bay through 20 different outfalls; the eastern third of the bay has been reclaimed for the airport, and a further 350m of reclamation is proposed in the near future. -

Assessment of Water and Sanitary Services 2005 For the purpose of the water supply assessment Wellington City has been broken down into Brooklyn, Churton, Eastern Wellington, Johnsonville, Karori, Kelburn, Onslow, Southern Wellington, Wadestown, Tawa and Wellington Central. These are based on the MoH distribution zones in which these communities receive similar quality water from its taps. There are three main wastewater catchments in the city terminating at the treatment plants at Moa Point, Karori (Western) and in Porirua City. These will be treated as three communities for the wastewater part of this assessment. There are 42 stormwater catchments, defined by topography, in the Wellington area. These will form the communities for this part of this assessment. Table 1 shows the water, wastewater and stormwater communities in relation to each other. In the case of sanitary services, the community has been defined as the entire area of Wellington City. There are no major facilities (i.e. the hospital, educational institutions or the prisons) that are not owned by Council which have their own water supplies or disposal systems. 2.2 Non-reticulated communities The non-reticulated communities have been separated into the rural communities of Makara, Ohariu Valley, South Karori Horokiwi and the smaller Glenside settlement. Within the Makara community another community can be defined which is the Meridian Village. Within the first four communities all properties have individual methods of collecting potable water and disposing of waste and stormwater. The Meridian village has a combined water and wastewater system. There are 6 properties in Glenside which rely on unreticulated water supply, though there is uncertainty to which houses are served by the Councils wastewater system. -

Expanding the South Island Fast Charger Network In partnership with ChargeNet, Foodstuffs NZ will install four 50kW public fast- chargers at Pak’NSave and New World supermarkets in the South Island, helping to expand coverage of the EV charging network to some key smaller centres in the South Island. The intended locations are Bluff, Kaiapoi, Tapanui, and Dunedin. The project aims to help ‘plug the gaps’ in the fast charging network by providing free public access to charging in more locations around New Zealand. 2. Foodstuffs New Zealand $416,000 Charging on! Expanding the North Island Fast Charger Network In partnership with ChargeNet, Foodstuffs will install seven 50kW and five 25kW public fast chargers at Pak’NSave and New World supermarkets in the North Island, helping to further expand coverage of the EV charging network to key centres in the North Island. The intended locations are Napier, Hamilton, Tauriko (Bay of Plenty), Eastridge and Mt Roskill (Auckland), Manukau, Kilbirnie, Churton Park, Karori, Mana, Island Bay, and Silverstream (Wellington). Box 10-420 Wellington New Zealand © 1994 ISSN 1170-3806 ISBN 0-478-01481-9 Key words: South Island saddleback, Philesturnus carunculatus carunculatus, recovery plan ABSTRACT South Island saddlebacks (tieke) were widely distributed over the South and Stewart Islands in the 19th century. Their rapid decline was documented during the latter 19th century. Following a rodent invasion on their sole remaining island habitat South Island saddlebacks were under threat of immediate extinction. This was thwarted by prompt translocations of remaining birds to nearby predator-free islands. This plan outlines conservation goals and suggests options for continuing the recovery of this subspecies. Recovery is to be achieved through a programme of island habitat restoration and saddleback translocations. Eradication of rodents and weka is promoted by this plan, in some instances this plan suggests that discussions be held with the local Iwi to determine the appropriateness of these eradications. Saddlebacks are to be introduced or re-introduced to a number of islands around the South Island coast. When recovery has been achieved South Island saddleback populations may be established on up to 26 islands with a total of about 4000 individuals. At this population level they will not be ranked as threatened, but be classified as rare and no longer requiring a programme of on-going intensive conservation management. Recovery management proposed in this plan will be undertaken jointly by Department of Conservation staff, Iwi representatives and members of the public. -

WELLINGTON’S TE ARA O NGA TUPUNA HERITAGE TRAIL MAIN FEATURES OF THE TRAIL: This trail will take about four hours to drive and view at an easy TE ARA O NGA TUPUNA pace. Vantage points are mostly accessible by wheelchair but there are steps at some sites such as Rangitatau and Uruhau pa. A Pou (carved post), a rock or an information panel mark various sites on the trail. These sites have been identified with a symbol. While the trail participants will appreciate that many of the traditional sites occupied by Maori in the past have either been built over or destroyed, but they still have a strong spiritual presence. There are several more modern Maori buildings such as Pipitea Marae and Tapu Te Ranga Marae, to give trail participants a selection of Maori sites through different periods of history. ABOUT THE TRAIL: The trail starts at the Pipitea Marae in Thorndon Quay, opposite the Railway Station, and finishes at Owhiro Bay on the often wild, southern coast of Wellington. While not all the old pa, kainga, cultivation and burial sites of Wellington have been included in this trail, those that are have been selected for their accessibility to the public, and their viewing interest. HOW TO KILL RATS AND ENGAGE A COMMUNITY INTRODUCTION Predator Free Miramar is a volunteer community project, established in winter 2017 to rid Wellington’s Miramar Peninsula of rats, stoats and weasels, and bring back the birds and the bush to the eastern suburbs. Over the last three years we’ve created a community of backyard trappers, by asking people to install a trap in their backyards, keep it baited, and report their catches. Simple. The initial target was to have a rat trap in one out of every five backyards, effectively a trap every 50 metres, which is thought to be roughly the home range of a rat. There are about 7500 households on the peninsula, which means we needed 1500 backyards traps to meet the target. As we approach Christmas 2019, we have 1448 traps out, and Predator Free Wellington’s eradication operation is almost complete. As a community working together, in two and a half years, we’ve removed more than ten thousand rats, mice, hedgehogs and weasels from the Miramar landscape. My hugely supportive wife Jess is able to access our deep freezer again, now that my stash of frozen ‘sample’ rats and weasels have been cleared, and the months of deferred maintenance in our own backyard might just get a look in, now that I don’t have quite so many trapping missions to complete. So what follows is a reflection on how we got here. Despite the title, this is not an instruction manual on how another group should proceed; what makes these projects so great is that there’s no one way of doing it. -

Forecast Fertility Rates (Births Per Woman)
The number of births in Wellington City are derived by multiplying age specific fertility rates of women aged 15-49 by the female population in these age groups for all years during the forecast period. Birth rates are especially influential in determining the number of children in an area, with most inner urban areas having relatively low birth rates, compared to outer suburban or rural and regional areas. Birth rates have been changing, with a greater share of women bearing children at older ages or not at all, with overall increases in fertility rates. This can have a large impact on the future population profile.
