Open Information Science 2019; 3: 197–208 Research article Iulian Vamanu* Fake News and Propaganda: A Critical Discourse Research Perspective https://doi.org/10.1515/opis-2019-0014 Received September 25, 2018; accepted May 9, 2019 Abstract: Having been invoked as a disturbing factor in recent elections across the globe, fake news has become a frequent object of inquiry for scholars and practitioners in various fields of study and practice. My article draws intellectual resources from Library and Information Science, Communication Studies, Argumentation Theory, and Discourse Research to examine propagandistic dimensions of fake news and to suggest possible ways in which scientific research can inform practices of epistemic self-defense. Specifically, the article focuses on a cluster of fake news of potentially propagandistic import, employs a framework developed within Argumentation Theory to explore ten ways in which fake news may be used as propaganda, and suggests how Critical Discourse Research, an emerging cluster of theoretical and methodological approaches to discourses, may provide people with useful tools for identifying and debunking fake news stories. My study has potential implications for further research and for literacy practices. In particular, it encourages empirical studies of its guiding premise that people who became familiar with certain research methods are less susceptible to fake news. It also contributes to the design of effective research literacy practices. Cross-Media News Repertories in New Zealand

Volume 14, Issue 2 November 2017 Shopping in a narrow field: Cross-media news repertories in New Zealand Craig Hight, University of Newcastle, Australia Arezou Zalipour, University of Waikato, New Zealand Abstract: This article reports on the New Zealand case study within a larger project investigating cross-media news repertoires within (and across) national audiences. Six key news media repertoires emerged in this case study; heavy news consumers; hybrid browsers; digital browsers; ambivalent networkers; mainstream multiplatformers; and casual and connected). Despite a range of news media outlets available within New Zealand, particularly across digital platforms, participants consistently noted a relatively narrow social, cultural and political discursive field for news content in the country. Within this context, the news repertoires identified within this case study highlighted the high value placed by news consumers on national daily newspapers (print and online), and the continued salience of television and radio news broadcasting for some audience segments. But findings also offered a snapshot of the ways these are being supplemented or replaced, for some audience segments, by digital news outlets (even as these also generated dissatisfaction from many participants). Topline NPR/Kaiser Family Foundation/Harvard School of Public Health Survey on the Role of Health Care Interest Groups September 2009 Methodology The NPR/Kaiser Family Foundation/Harvard School of Public Health Survey on the Role of Health Care Interest Groups is part of a series of projects about health-related issues by NPR (National Public Radio), the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health. Representatives of the three organizations worked together to develop the survey questionnaire and to analyze the results, with NPR maintaining sole editorial control over its broadcasts relating to the survey results. The survey research team included Mollyann Brodie, Ph.D., Liz Hamel, and Sasha Buscho from the Kaiser Family Foundation; Professor Robert Blendon, Sc.D., and John Benson, M.A. of the Harvard School of Public Health; and Anne Gudenkauf, Joe Neel, Beth Donovan, Julie Rovner, and April Fulton from NPR. The survey was conducted August 27 through September 13, 2009, among a nationally representative random sample of 1,278 adults ages 18 and older. Telephone interviews conducted by landline (858) and cell phone (420, including 154 who had no landline telephone) were carried out in English and Spanish by Social Science Research Solutions. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. For results based on smaller subsets of respondents the margin of sampling error is somewhat higher. Please note: (1) Table percentages may not add to 100% due to rounding. Introduction Medical science is having an Icarus moment. Dead set on conquering a war on disease, humans have worked themselves into a paradox: people are living for longer but with greater suffering. The result is a lower quality of death, which flows from one’s quality of life at the end of life. This is not “diminishing returns” but rather damaging returns. We strive to avoid the inevitable at the cost of comfort later in life. The hypothetical “would you rather two good months or twelve bad months” is increasingly being met with the answer of “twelve bad months.” The state of many terminal patients is unsettling; some are full of drugs and protruding tubes, while others are kept alive in the latest stages of disease only by ventilators, but nearly all are trapped in their hospital beds.1 Often, these patients are in these states as the result of loved ones who are not ready to say one final goodbye – and understandably so.2 Death is the most terrifying existential reality humans all face. However, in our pursuit for just a little more time, the resulting human cost is more pain, more suffering, less freedom, and, ultimately, less enjoyment of those invaluable final moments of life.
