1. GREECE

Greece (also known as Hellas) is located in Southeast Europe. Its population is approximately 11 million. is the country's capital and largest city, followed by .

Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Passage open to changes and, at the same time, country with a deep, rich and influential cultural basis, Greece constitutes a marvelous oxymoron, as it combines progress and tradition. It is the land where cyan and indigo seas embrace rocky mountains. The land of silver olive groves, white houses and dazzling marbles. The land of intense light, where freedom emerges from . Land of hospitality, where comedy and tragedy coexist.

In Greece, the past is always present. You can admire the archetypes and you can feel the eternal spirit of this unique civilization which created harmony from chaos. A culture which discovered the unity of contrasts, based upon the imminent existential dialogue between – the world of senses and – the world of logical conscience. Dialogue which gave birth to brilliant cultural achievements which created the framework of the western civilization.

Being the place which saves the vision and the breath of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, Greece or Hellas is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, Western drama and the Olympic Games. That’s why this small country is considered the cradle of Western civilization.

In the light of the above mentioned, we can easily understand that this inspiring Hellenic spirit surpasses the dimension of static archeology and can offer us an ontological spectrum through which we can consider some of the most crucial issues of our times. The creation of new perspectives inspired by the spirit of Hellenism is the principal aim of our programs.

the answer on the question of environmental sustainability lies within us

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The natural world depicts itself in the natural environment as well as in the human hypostasis. Despite the fact that we tend to discern our existence from nature, we constitute a part of the natural circle, as we are composed by its elements. Our epoch – anthroposcene, as it is called by geologists or 6th extinction epoch, obliges us to rethink our position and our mentality towards the natural world, given the fact that we find ourselves in front of an environmental precipice. Are we able, as mankind, to exceed divisive logics and obtain self-awareness and self-respect by developing a more responsible as well as free interaction with the natural world? Within the corpus of this inspiring program, organized in the island of – the homeland of the Father of Medicine, the philosophy of Hippocrates meets the modern ecological thought. Tying together Philosophy, Physics, Ecology and Medicine, it constitutes an attempt for a creative reflection on some of the most serious matters which occur from the relation between humans and nature.

FROM HESIOD (GREEK MYTHOLOGY) TO MARVEL COMICS

Superheroes as cultural barometers PROGRAM OVERVIEW

According to the French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, “reflecting mechanisms of his unconscious, human imagination’s fabrications crystallized in diverse mythologies, define our system of values, determining consequently, to some extent, our movement in History.” Hence, the way a civilization conceives heroism reflects its approach on ethics, given the fact that heroes constitute prototypes – mirrors of a culture’s moral ontology. Associating Anthropology, Psychology, History and Sociology, this program calls us to dive into mythological imagination of different civilizations in a scientific way, aiming to discover the impact of myths on society’s existence, by abolishing the frontiers which separate reality from imagination.

Shifting from the ancient polis to the contemporary state – enterprise, passing by the church – state of Middle Ages and the sovereign nation – state of modernity, each transformation of the state’s hypostasis is projected on the model of its governance as well as on the profile of the politician. As a matter of fact, some important thinkers argue that the first two decades of our century constitute a pivotal moment in the history of politics as we are entering the era of the technization of politics where enormous technological corporations play an influential role and politicians tend to transform into versatile managers. Within this changing world, how do we perceive the relation between societies, governments and governors? Is politics an art (τέχνη) or a technique (τεχνική) within our contemporary technological framework? Political theory, history and sociology intermingle in this program which aspires to inspire its participants to think creatively on questions which impact our existence.

RADICALIZATION VS DEMOCRATIZATION IN THE DIGITAL ERA

emancipation and manipulation in the world of Internet PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Nowadays, as inhabitants of the cyberworld, each one of us is a transmitter and a receiver of any kind of information at the same time. Promise of independence and democratization as well as tool of propaganda and radicalization, the internet, by the nature of its function, becomes the contemporary kingdom of contradiction. Cyberlibertarians consider it as the unique solution for the fulfillment of their almost anarchic paradise while, simultaneously, religious terrorists, among other modern extremists, use it as their principal tool for their prosylitistic propaganda. In this world of fake news and artificial images, to which extent is differentiation possible? Mixing contemporary scientific research on digital humanities with testimonies of everyday life’s experience, this program aims to dissect the contradictory organism of the cyber – reality.

FROM THE LAUREL WREATH TO MILLION DOLLARS

how an era’s cultural values impact the Olympics PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Every era has its proper ontology and any single civilization constructs its unique system of values which is imprinted on its institutions. Once upon a time in Ancient Olympia, the laurel wreath was symbolizing the virtue and the glory. Shifting from the Hellenic idealism to the modern materialism which gave birth to commercialization, we can observe this deep change within the framework of athleticism. The modern Olympics was from its inception vulnerable to influence of commercial forces and this was one of the major worries of Pierre De Coubertin. This program, taking place in Ancient Olympia, organized in collaboration with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, offers to its participants the opportunity to feel the spirit of the authentic games in its original environment and enables them, as well, to develop a critical point of view as far as it concerns the contemporary ideology towards the Games.

IDENTITY – A PRODUCT OF ROOTS OR AN OUTCOME OF ROUTES?

Dialectic reflections on a hot button topic PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Since its origin, the history of mankind has been characterized by migrations and cultural intertwining. In an age of globalization, the ongoing migratory process, which has planetary reach, is destined to increase significantly, raising social, political, economic, religious, and ethical issues of the utmost importance. Can we coexist with the other, respecting his/her cultural particularity and keeping ours, or are we obliged to live in societies on the basis of cultural homogeneity? Identities – hybrid constructions of historical necessity or stable, unchanging entities? The current program deals with one of the most crucial matters of our time, approaching it from different perspectives, with the hope to reach an objective analysis, by presenting and negotiating with controversial claims and avoiding fears and prejudices. Given the fact that Greece is strongly impacted by the migration crisis, we consider it necessary to focus on serious matters which emerge from this historical procedure (like national identity), from a dialectic as well as scientific angle.

SEA – FIELD Page | 23

OF FRIENDSHIP AND CONFLICT

Communication and domination in the seaspace – from and to the United States and contemporary China PROGRAM OVERVIEW

In his work The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1783, the founder of the North American school of geopolitics A.Mahan showed the influence of naval power on the historical order of events and the growth of the welfare of the nation. The basic idea of the theory of A. Mahan is Marinism, according to which the fate of mankind is solved by the expanses of the oceans while the driving force of progress is the competition between the sea and the land forces. Moreover, the relation between our species and the sea, ranging over geopolitical, geoeconomic, strategic, commercial and other approaches, impacts our existence substantially, determining our Odyssey into time and space. The sea is the synonym of communication between nations and cultures but it also constitutes a field of conflict and domination. Composing theoretical knowledge (History, Geopolitics) with more practical disciplines such as Marine studies and Shipping, this program aims to introduce its participants into various matters which arise from the relation between the humans and the sea, as well as from the ambiguous communication between different nations and civilizations in the seaspace throughout History.
