(Jan. 4, 2011) – Jackson guitars is proud to announce their newfound partnership with legendary bassist and Megadeth founding member, David Ellefson. As part of the partnership, Ellefson will collaborate with the Jackson Research and Development team to design future Jackson bass models based on the knowledge that only decades worth of sold-out world tours and groundbreaking albums can create. Additionally, Jackson is paying tribute to an instrument closely tied to David and Jackson bass guitars – the Jackson USA Custom Shop “Rust in Peace” Concert Bass. The instrument is based on the Jackson Concert Bass Ellefson used during the recording of Megadeth’s landmark 1990 album; and is a replica of what he used more recently on Megadeth’s “20th Anniversary ‘Rust in Peace’ World Tour,” Megadeth Rust in Peace Live DVD/CD and Metallica/Slayer/Megadeth/Anthrax: The Big 4 – Live from Sofia, Bulgaria DVD. The USA Custom Shop “Rust in Peace” Concert Bass features a limited-edition burned-in fallout logo and “Rust in Peace” themed case. Additional features include an alder body, quartersawn maple neck with a compound radius ebony fretboard, jumbo frets and pearl sharkfin inlays, one EMG® 35DC bridge pickup, one EMG® 35CS neck pickup, EMG® BQS electronics, a BADASS™ bridge and Hipshot tuning machines. The Fender Custom Shop and “Blackie” Your questions answered… A few days before the launch of the Fender Eric Clapton “Blackie” Reissue, Mike Eldred – Director of Sales and Marketing for the Fender Custom Shop, was interviewed by Guitar Center for his personal account of the “Blackie” Reissue project. GC: So Mike, what’s your role at Fender, and in the Custom Shop specifically? Mike: I’m Director of Sales and Marketing for the FMIC Custom Division, and that encompasses all brands: Tacoma, Guild, Gretsch, Fender, Charvel, Jackson, and the amplifiers. GC: What is it about “Blackie” that makes it so special, even within that special world? Mike: It’s an iconic Stratocaster. The story about the guitar is really such a great story about how Eric bought the guitar--bought several guitars--and then pieced together basically just one guitar from a bunch of different parts. So he actually built the guitar, which is very unique when it comes to iconic guitars like this. A lot of times they’re just bought at a store or something like that. But here, an artist actually built the guitar, and then used it on so many different recordings, and it was so identified with Eric Clapton and his musical legacy. GC: Then, after 35 years of ownership, he offered it up for sale. What did Fender think when they heard that Guitar Center had bought Blackie at auction for almost a million dollars? Mike: Just that we were glad that it was sold to someone we have a relationship with. The concern that we had was that somebody was going to buy it and then just lock it away and that would be that, or some private collector would buy it or something like that.

Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

Taking the Stage by Lauren Biron AT MIDNIGHT, armed with a ruler and a pencil, Bentley Chang kneels in his bedroom under a poster of John Lennon. Next to a large, black bass drum that dominates the floor, he lays out a thick sheet of drawing paper and begins to sketch the letter “zhe” of the Cyrillic alphabet; it looks like a K reflected along its vertical axis. In the muggy, musky room, his skin sticks to his wifebeater and basketball shorts as he outlines his design. Once finished, he cuts out the stencil with a razor and attaches the altered K to the drum with masking tape. He thought of using the letter “zhe” as a “K” when he was driving down the freeway. It came to him as randomly as the band name had come to their DJ, Kevin Agorrilla. The group had suggested names for weeks at a time: Circles with Dots, Smegmatron, Audial Entropy, Forte. Then one day at practice, Kevin suggested Kersey, named after the masculine Charles Bronson character from Death Wish 3. Only four of the six band members had seen the movie, but all agreed that Charles Bronson was so badass he could kill Chuck Norris in a fight, and that was good enough. The name provided no stigma, no definition of what they should sound like. The rhythm and funk and punk could take over. When Bentley accidentally misspelled the band name, Kearsey was born. Now, as the music of Circa Survive plays, Bentley mixes red and crimson acrylic paint and retrieves a flat brush.
