Wednesday, April 15, 2020 New Blog Post Explores AEP Policy Resource Last month we released updates for ArtScan, a clearinghouse of the latest state policies supporting arts education. To better navigate that resource, program manager Krystal Johnson has shared an informative blog post, "New to ArtScan? Here's What You Need to Know," which is featured on Education Commission of the States's Ed Note. From unpacking ArtScan at a Glance's policy benefits as a 50-State Comparison to highlighting some of the key state policies and reports available through the ArtScan database, we hope the blog post serves as a launching point for exploring this helpful arts education policy resource. RFP Updates for 2020 Annual Convening With the deadline for the AEPAC 2020 Request for Current Session Proposals less than a month away, we wanted to share some of the ways we’re adapting the RFP in light of uncertainties about future travel. Whether the Convening takes place as a large gathering in San Diego or goes virtual, we’re excited for the opportunity to come together as a field to connect as we reflect on the work we’ve done and look ahead to our future work in arts education. News From Our Partners Applications Open for National Music and Choral Ensemble Competition The National Association for Music Education is holding its All-National Honor Ensembles on Nov. 5-8 at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Top U.S. high school musicians can now apply to perform in one of these ensembles, which will be led by well-known conductors in the field of music education. Eligible students must submit video auditions by May 15. Small Business Loans Now Available for Independent Contractors As part of the CARES Act, the Small Business Administration U.S.’s new Paycheck Protection Program, which was created to assist small businesses and nonprofits impacted by current economic hardship, is now also available to sole proprietors and independent contractors. Eligible organizations and individuals, including independent teaching artists, can now apply for loans that will be completely forgiven and treated as grants when recipients meet program requirements. The program is first-come, first-served, so apply today! National Music Foundation Announces Best U.S. School Districts for Music Education The National Association for Music Merchants recently shared its Best Communities for Music Education winners. The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. More than 750 schools and school districts received this honor for their exceptional commitment to providing access to high-quality music education. Florida Chorus Group Receives National Honor for Community Outreach Programming Chorus America has announced that Key Chorale, a Sarasota chorus group, has won its 2020 Education and Community Engagement Award for exemplary collaborative programming. Key Chorale’s education and community programming includes partnerships with a school serving vulnerable elementary-aged populations and organizations serving older adults with Parkinson’s disease and memory loss. The award includes a $2,500 cash prize to be presented during Chorus America’s virtual convention held later this year. News From The Field Congressional Art Competition Opens Call for Submissions The Congressional Institute is sponsoring a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage youth artistic development. The competition offers one student from each congressional district the opportunity to have their artwork featured as part of an exhibit at the U.S. Capitol Building. The winning artwork will also be featured on the Congressional Art Competition page. Those interested can contact their representatives to learn more about district-specific submission guidelines. Legendary Rock & Metal Musicians Engage Youth Impacted by COVID-19 The David Ellefson Youth Music Foundation’s mission to improve quality music education opportunities in schools expanded recently in light of COVID-19. The Foundation has announced its "School’s Out" initiative, which will provide free remote music lessons and one-on-one mentoring sessions for students at home because of COVID-19 school closures. Participating musicians include Megadeth’s David Ellefson and Dirk Verbeuren, Alice Cooper’s Jimmy DeGrasso and more. Students interested in participating in this program can apply online now. Toyota’s Grant-Funded Initiative Increases Arts Education Opportunities for Texas Community To strengthen West Dallas’s cultural offerings and educational opportunities, Dallas’s AT&T Performing Arts Center has partnered with Toyota to create a community engagement initiative called ArtsBridge. The program allocates resources for transportation and tickets to performances by world-class artists as one way to remove barriers preventing residents from participating in educational workshops and local artistic and cultural events. Theatre Arts Administrators Launch Online Initiative to Support Artists During Pandemic Several regional theatres have created Play at Home, a website featuring free mini-plays commissioned from playwrights. These new plays can be read within 10 minutes so that anyone interested can read or perform them at home or share with others via video conferencing. Created to assist artists facing economic hardship because of COVID-19 theatre closures, commissioning theatres provide $500 stipends to playwrights selected to write plays.
