He was commissioned by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs as a painter and engraver from 1823–1834. He was assigned to paint portraits of Native American leaders participating in treaty signings and ceremonies, primarily in Wisconsin and Indiana. Lewis published his work from 1825–1828 in The Aboriginal Portfolio in 1835 and 1836. He also contributed work to the History of the Indian Tribes of North America collection, a multivolume biographical work. He died in New York City, New York on 2 November 1858 and was buried in the Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery before being reinterred in the Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City ca. 1875. Most of the drawings in The Aboriginal Portfolio were from the First Treaty of Prairie du Chien in August 1825 in Wisconsin; the Treaty with the Potawatomi on 16 October 1826 in Mississinewa, Indiana; the Treaty with the Miami on 23 October 1826 in Fort Wayne, Indiana; and the Treaty with the Chippewa in 1827 in Butte des Morts, Wisconsin.
