180617 Lion Salt Works HATTERS MIRROR CHECK Sunday 18th June 2017 Lion Salt Works A trip back in time to look into the production of salt in Cheshire was the theme of today’s ride-out with a visit to the Lion Salt Works at Marston just outside Northwich. Thanks to Pete (Two Pints) for coming up with this idea and for planning and leading the ride on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year so far. Starting at City Airport Barton, 16 bikes with 4 pillion riders set off on the A57 to cross over the Warburton Bridge heading towards Lymm. Then it was along some beautiful country roads taking us through Daresbury, Frodsham and Northwich to the destination at Marston, a short distance of around 35 miles. With the temperature already soaring Pete very thoughtfully organised a bottle of ice cold water for everyone as we were putting down the jiffy stands. This award winning museum, which opened in June 2015, stands on the site of the Lion Salt Works which was constructed in 1894 by Henry Ingram Thompson. The salt works ran on this site for almost 100 years eventually closing in June 1986. Walking through the restored buildings we were able to see how the salt works operated and the industry’s impact on mid-Cheshire’s people, economy and landscape. It was evident that it was not the nicest or healthiest of working environments with the workers, usually stripped to the waist, having to contend with the heat and the damp salt laden atmosphere. HATTERS MIRROR CHECK After the tour there were refreshments available at either the museum’s own on site café or at the Salt Barge pub across the road. HATTERS MIRROR CHECK The return journey took us towards Plumley and on to the Seven Sisters Farm for an afternoon ice cream stop which was most welcome given the temperature of the day. We managed to find some shade either in the barn or under the trees. The final leg of the ride was via Chelford and the A34 back towards Manchester. A really enjoyable day out with thanks to Pete for coming up with this one. Thank you also to Richard for taking on the rear marker duties. MG 30/06/17 .

    The archaeology of mining, and quarrying, for Salt and the Evaporites (Gypsum, Anhydrite, Potash and Celestine) Test drafted by Peter Claughton Rock salt, or halite (NaCl- sodium chloride), has been mined since the late 17th century, having been discovered during exploratory shaft sinking for coal at Marbury near Northwich, Cheshire, in November 1670. Prior to that the brine springs of Cheshire and those at Droitwich in Worcestershire were the source of salt produced by evaporation, along with production from a large number of coastal sites using seawater. Alabaster, fine grained gypsum (CaSO4. 2H2O - hydrated calcium sulphate), has however been quarried in the East Midlands for use in sculpture since at least the 14th century (Cheetham 1984, 11-13) and the use of gypsum for making plaster dates from about the same period. Consumption The expansion of mining and quarrying for salt and the other evaporites came in the 19th century with the development of the chemical industry. Salt (sodium chloride) was a feedstock for the production of the chlorine used in many chemical processes and in the production of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and soda ash (sodium carbonate). Anhydrite (anhydrous calcium sulphate) was used in the production of sulphuric acid. Salt or halite (rock salt) was first mined at Winsford in Cheshire (the site of the only remaining active rock salt mine in England) in 1844. Production expanded in the late 19th century to feed the chemical industry in north Cheshire (together with increasing brine production from the Northwich salt fields). The Lancashire salt deposits, on the Wyre estuary at Fleetwood and Preesall, not discovered until 1872 whilst boring in search of haematite (Landless 1979, 38), were a key to the development of the chemical industry in that area.

Read 17 November 1960 N the second volume of his Economic History of Modern I Britain (p. 145), Sir John Clapham, writing of the chambers of commerce and trade associations which multiplied rapidly after 1860, suggested that between 1850 and 1875 "there was rather less co-operation among 'capitalist' producers than there had been in the more difficult first and second quarters" of the nineteenth century. He mentioned that in the British salt industry there had been price-fixing associations "based on a local monopoly" in the early nineteenth century, and added that after 1825 the industry "witnessed alternations of gentle­ men's agreements and 'fighting trade' " until the formation of the Salt Union in 1888. This combine has been called "the first British trust", but to the salt proprietors of the time it was merely "a new device, made easier by limited liability, for handling an old problem". In the United Kingdom Permian and Triassic halite (rock salt) deposits have been affected by natural and artificial dissolution producing karstic landforms and subsidence. Brine springs from the Triassic salt have been exploited since Roman times, or possibly earlier, indicating prolonged natural dissolution. Medieval salt extraction in England is indicated by the of place names ending in “wich” indicating brine spring exploitation at Northwich, Middlewich, Nantwich and Droitwich. Later, Victorian brine extraction in these areas accentuated salt karst development causing severe subsidence problems that remain a legacy. The salt was also mined, but the mines flooded and consequent brine extraction caused the workings to collapse, resulting in catastrophic surface subsidence. Legislation was enacted to pay for the damage and a levy is still charged for salt extraction. Some salt mines are still collapsing and the re-establishment of the post-brine extraction hydrogeological regimes means that salt springs may again flow causing further dissolution and potential collapse.

    Pleistocene and Flandrian Natural Rock Salt Subsidence at Arclid Green, Sandbach, Cheshire Peter Worsley Abstract. This applied geological case study concerns the Quaternary geomorphological evolution of a small part of the lowland Cheshire characterised by ‘equifinal subsidence landforms’ resulting from the processes of rock salt dissolution and post Last Glacial Maximum glacial ice meltout. The context relates to environmental issues arising from the quarrying of Chelford Formation industrial ‘silica sands’. Problems related to natural and human induced rock salt dissolution are reviewed. The respective roles of Triassic bedrock halites, collapsed strata, periglacial alluvial sands and multiple glaciation in determining the local stratigraphy and allied landforms are discussed. The morphology and fill of a post glacial subsidence area is examined. It is concluded that natural rock salt dissolution is the principal process influencing the superficial deposits and geomorphology of the study area and that this process has been active over hundreds of thousand years. The deposition and survival of thick silica sands and the glacigenic sediments beneath is probably due to halite dissolution.     THOMAS BRASSEY’S FIRST SUCCESSFUL RAILWAY CONTRACT It is popularly thought by followers of Thomas Brassey that after the unsuccessful railway tender for the Dutton Viaduct over the River Weaver and the Weaver Navigation in Cheshire his next tender for the Penkridge Viaduct over the River Penk in Staffordshire, in 1835, was his first successful railway tender. I am sorry to disappoint you reader, but this is not true. Let me explain. After leaving school Thomas Brassey went to work for William Lawton who was a surveyor and land agent in and around the Chester area. Brassey’s first job in his apprenticeship as a trainee surveyor was to work with a surveyor named Penson, under the direction of Thomas Telford, on the London to Holyhead road from Shrewsbury to Holyhead, now known as the A5. The work Thomas Brassey undertook after he had left his first task with his employer, William Lawton, proves to us what a remarkable man he was. Not only did Lawton put Brassey in charge of his Birkenhead Office but he also made him a director of his company. At the same time Brassey worked for the Stanley family, managing their commercially developing Stourton (Storeton) Quarries on their estate. It was there that he first met George Stephenson who was looking for stone for the Sankey Viaduct. Brassey envisaged the expansion of the Birkenhead the area and so built himself a brick works and lime kilns, borrowing the funds for this from his father. He thus had many “balls in the air” as a comparatively young man, which proves that he was very capable and had the ability to do well.

    Vale Royal Borough Council MARSTON (LION SALT WORKS) REVISED CONSERVATION AREA APPRAISAL Conservation Areas were introduced by the Civic Amenities Act of 1967, and are now an accepted part of Town and Country Planning legislation and practice. Local Authorities are required to identify “areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance”. They are also under a duty to review existing designations from time to time. It has been recognised that if the special interest, character and appearance of a conservation area is to be retained, it must be managed. The first task in this process is to define and analyse the special characteristics that justify the designation of the conservation area. This is achieved by carrying out a Conservation Area Appraisal. The character of an area depends upon its historic background, the architectural quality and interest of its buildings, their materials and detailing, the way they relate to each other, the line of the highway, the quality of the landscape, trees and open spaces and a variety of unique features. A Conservation Area Appraisal provides a description of those elements that contribute to and define the character of the conservation area. It also provides the basis for development plan policies and development control decisions, both within and adjacent to the Conservation Area boundary. Subsequently the appraisal will provide the background for proposals to preserve or enhance the area. It may also identify development opportunities. Therefore the Government has stated that appraisals are considered to be essential for all existing and proposed conservation areas.

    THE RISE AND FALL OF THE MARSHALLS OF NORTHWICH, SALT PROPRIETORS: A SAGA OF THE INDUSTRIAL ERA IN CHESHIRE, 1720-1917 BY D. A. IREDALE, M.A., PH.D. HEN Thomas Marshall from the Hartford Beach, near WNorthwich, appeared before a parliamentary committee in London in 1817, he proudly proclaimed himself the largest salt proprietor in the kingdom. The wealthiest merchant in mid-Cheshire, Marshall determined that his family should one day sit on committees and at table with the greatest in the land. To this end he sent his son to Eton, Cambridge, and the Middle Temple. And his grandson did indeed climb towards the highest levels of society. I FOUNDING THE FAMILY FORTUNE During the seventeenth century the Marshalls lived in Nant- wich. They began business as shoemakers, then as framework knitters. By hard work they grew prosperous, so that when Richard Marshall died in 1692 the family owned a fine "dwelling house in the welshrow" and valuable textile machinery. But living in one of Cheshire's salt towns, the family naturally acquired a "wich-house & twelve leads walling", that is, equip­ ment for raising and boiling brine to produce salt. Salt had long been valued as a preservative and seasoner of food by the fisheries and the navy, by dairy farmers and every housewife, but during the industrial age it was to become an important raw material in the glass, soap, and chemical industries. To invest in salt, therefore, was to plan sensibly for future prosperity. The Marshalls sent much of their cloth and, probably, small loads of salt overland to Northwich, and then by river or road to Liverpool.
