Sibson Date: 20 December 2013. 2 ABSTRACT The Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 promoted regular and effective religious instruction for the parish laity. This was facilitated by the development of preaching and instructional texts – works known as pastoralia – which proliferated throughout Europe. This dissertation explores the phenomenon of vernacular pastoralia written in rhymed verse, works intended for oral performance to a lay audience. My focus is on the work of four writers of sacramental instruction in Anglo-Norman and Middle English. The earliest text considered is the Anglo-Norman Corset, written circa 1240- 50 by Robert the Chaplain. The other three authors were more or less contemporary, all writing in the late-thirteenth or early-fourteenth centuries. I examine three penitential poems by the Franciscan friar, Nicholas Bozon: Pus ke homme deit morir, Tretys de la Passion and Le char d’Orgueil, and then Handlyng Synne by the Gilbertine, Robert Mannyng. I finally consider the religious poems of William of Shoreham, a vicar in rural Kent, concentrating on De septem sacramentis and On the Trinity, Creation, the Existence of Evil, Devils, Adam and Eve. While all these writers confronted the challenges of providing religious instruction for the laity, their efforts also reflected a concern with social issues and an awareness of the literary nature of their verse enterprises. The texts frequently employed poetic or fictive devices found in popular literary genres and, whilst these illuminated and entertained listeners, they sometimes rendered the teaching obscure. The meeting of sacramental exposition, social discourse and literary invention resulted in complex textual interplay and tension, as well as in memorable formulations of faith. This dissertation considers the content of verse pastoralia in their historical context and aims to assess how the texts may have been received and understood by parishioners in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century England. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is impossible to write a dissertation without the help and encouragement of many people.     Antonius Gerardus Maria Poppelaars HUSBANDS, OUTLAWS AND KIDS: THE INFLUENCE OF OLD NORSE ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE HUSBANDS, OUTLAWS E KIDS: A INFLUÊNCIA DO NÓRDICO ANTIGO NA LÍNGUA INGLESA Antonius Gerardus Maria Poppelaars1 Abstract: What have common English words such as husbands, outlaws and kids and the sentence they are weak to do with Old Norse? Yet, all these examples are from Old Norse, the Norsemen’s language. However, the Norse influence on English is underestimated as the Norsemen are viewed as barbaric, violent pirates. Also, the Norman occupation of England and the Great Vowel Shift have obscured the Old Norse influence. These topics, plus the Viking Age, the Scandinavian presence in England, as well as the Old Norse linguistic influence on English and the supposed French influence of the Norman invasion will be described. The research for this etymological article was executed through a descriptive- qualitative approach. Concluded is that the Norsemen have intensively influenced English due to their military supremacy and their abilities to adaptation. Even the French-Norman French language has left marks on English. Nowadays, English is a lingua franca, leading to borrowings from English to many languages, which is often considered as invasive. But, English itself has borrowed from other languages, maintaining its proper character. Hence, it is hoped that this article may contribute to a greater acknowledgement of the Norse influence on English and undermine the scepticism towards the English language as every language has its importance.     Churchman E DITORIAL Sheep without a Shepherd? One of the side-effects of the decision to consecrate women as bishops in the Church of England has been the official recognition of the need to appoint an Evangelical bishop with a brief to minister to those who cannot accept female episcopal oversight. That some concessions would have to be made to the conservatives in the Church has been clear all along, and in that sense, the news that such an appointment will be made is not particularly surprising. The battles of the past few years over women bishops have been quite vicious at times, and honest observers have had to admit that the blame for this rests on the shoulders of the victors, who cannot (or will not) understand their opponents’ point of view. Worse still, the victors have done their best to silence objectors altogether, even if the people concerned are in principle on their side. It is impossible to forget the attempt that was made to impeach Philip Giddings, the chairman of the House of Laity in General Synod, merely because he voted against the immediate introduction of women bishops. Dr Giddings supports the consecration of women but he thought that the provisions being offered to those who disagree with that were not generous enough, and when he was attacked for his principled stand it was clear to most people that things had gone too far. Even the archbishop of Canterbury was moved to comment that how we treat one another when differences divide us actually matters—the notion of ‘good disagreement,’ which he is now so keen to promote, can almost certainly be traced back to this unhappy episode.

OAKLEY, M.A. THE church of St. Andrew the Apostle, Rochester, was founded by Ethelbert, King of Kent, as a college for a small number of secular canons under Justus, Bishop of Rochester, in A.D. 604. Very httle is known about the history of this house. It never seems to have had much influence outside its own walls, and though it possessed considerable landed estates, seems to have been relatively small and poor. It also suffered at the hands of the Danes. Bishops Justus, Romanus, Pauhnus and Ithamar were all remarkable men, but after Bishop Putta's transla- tion to Hereford in 676, very Httle is heard of Rochester. Their bishop, Siweard, is not mentioned as having been at Hastings with King Harold as were many of the Saxon bishops and abbots, and the house put up no opposition to William I when he seized their lands and gave them to his half brother Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, whom he had created Earl of Kent. The chroniclers say that the house was destitute, and that, when Siweard died in 1075, it was barely able to support the five canons on the estabHshment.1 Four years after his conquest of England, Wilham I invited his friend Lanfranc, Prior of Caen and a former monk of Bee in Normandy, to be bis archbishop at Canterbury. Lanfranc's task was specific: to reorganize EngHsh monasticism on the pattern of Bee; to develop a strict cloistered monasticism, but one of a kind that was not entirely cut off by physical barriers from the Hfe of the rest of the church.

The image in our header is from the first Cranbrook parish composite register [ref. P100/1/A/1], and is just one of the thousands of registers that will be digitised. We are also in the middle of transferring the remaining historic records of the Diocese of Canterbury from Canterbury Cathedral Archives to the Kent History and Library Centre to join its probate records, which have been held by Kent Archives since 1946. At the same time, archive cataloguing of one of Maidstone’s major papermaking collections is nearly complete; further World War I commemorative activities are underway; and work continues on the Catalogue Transfer Project and Manorial Documents Register Project for Kent. If we can judge by the dates of the act books and wills and inventories registers they covered, this recycling became a habit during the episcopate of Archbishop Matthew Parker (1559-1575). It is perhaps ironic that at precisely the time that Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, probably both closet Roman Catholics, were still being employed to write motets for the Chapel Royal, such disrespectful treatment was being accorded at Canterbury to their medieval predecessors.

Indeed, its delicate sound was more suitable in the inner chambers of courts and the quiet gardens of bourgeois villas than in the uproarious battle fields and the busy streets of towns.
