Southern California Channel Islands Bibliography, Through 1992 Southern California Channel Islands Bibliography, through 1992 Comprises 4035 references to the scientific literature on Southern California's Channel Islands. The Bibliography was compiled by the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and is presented here in a February 1993 version. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History presents a California Channel Islands Bibliography on its website. It has more recent references and overlaps considerably with this bibliography. However this bibliography has some references not in their database, so it is maintained in original form. # 1. Abbott PL, Kies RP, Bachmann WR, Natenstedt CJ (San Diego State Univ., Dep. Geol. Recruitment of the sea hare, Aplysia californica , was examined at 10 rocky reefs off the coast of Santa Catalina Island, CA, for up to 3 yrs or more. A. californica recruit primarily to the red alga Plocamium cartilagineum . Recruitment intensity (number of recruits/kg Plocamium ) differed dramatically but consistently between reefs, and varied between months. Recruitment during Jan- Feb probably consists of larvae spawned locally, in the Channel Islands area, during the summer peak in reproduction. Recruitment during Jun to Sept probably consists of larvae spawned in the Baja, California, Mexico, region which are carried north by summer currents. Reproduction is cued by high temperatures in the summer, and occurs over a large range of body sizes. Winter recruits that survive to the summer reproduce at masses of 500 g or more, while summer recruits reproduce the same season at masses of around 0.75 g. Survival of winter recruits is low, but survivors have high fecundity because of their large body size. The asynchronous seasonal reproductive patterns of Channel Island and Baja California populations may be important to the population dynamics of these populations since they are linked by a common larval pool. population dynamics/reproduction/marine molluscs/Aplysia california/Plocamium cartilagineum/seasonality/temporal variation/INE/USA/ California/Santa Catalina Island/IE/Mexico/Baja California/recruitment/ASFA. # 7. CALIF., LOS ANGELES, CALIF. 90089-0740. BA. A time series of water temperature, salinity, and nutrient measurements has been made in San Pedro and San Nicolas Basins of the southern California borderland between 1977 and 1988. These basins exhibit temporally coincident changes in temperature and nutrient content defining a period of basin flushing (1982-1984) and a period of stagnation (1984-1987). During the flushing period, cooler, oxygen- and NO3--rich water replaces warmer, oxygen- and NO3--depleted bottom water. Flushing produces a decrease of 0.2.degree.C in the average temperatures of San Pedro Basin bottom water (790-900 m) and an increase in the average oxygen content by 12 .mu.M. These values are 0.1 and 3 for San Nicolas Basin (1,400-1,800 m). The residence time of water in San Pedro Basin during the flushing period is 12 .+-. 6 months and 9 .+-. 2 months in San Nicolas Basin. A box model approach, constrained by the time-series data for the stagnation period, was used to determine values of the effective vertical eddy diffusivities for the 790-m horizon in San Pedro Basin and 1,400-m horizon in San Nicolas Basin (1.3 .+-. 0.4 and 9.9 .+-. 3.4 cm2 s-1 respectively). EIA GUIDANCE MANUAL - Building, Construction, Townships and Area Development Projects Ministry of Environment & Forests GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, NEW DELHI Environmental Impact Assessment Guidance Manual for BUILDING, CONSTRUCTION, TOWNSHIPS and AREA DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS Prepared by Administrative Staff College of India Bellavista, Khairatabad, Hyderabad February 2010 Environmental Impact Assessment Guidance Manual for Building, Construction, Townships and Area Development Siripurapu K. Rao M.A. (Cantab), Ph.D. (Cantab) DIRECTOR GENERAL Leadership through Learning Acknowledgements Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a planning tool generally accepted as an integral component of sound decision-making. EIA is to give the environment its due place in the decision-making process by clearly evaluating the environmental consequences of the proposed activity before action is taken. Early identification and characterization of critical environmental impacts allow the public and the government to form a view about the environmental acceptability of a proposed developmental project and what conditions should apply to mitigate or reduce those risks and impacts. Environmental Clearance (EC) for certain developmental projects has been made mandatory by the Ministry of Environment & Forests through its Notification issued on 27.01.1994 under the provisions of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Keeping in view a decade of experience in the Environmental Clearance process and the demands from various stakeholders, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) issued revised Notification on EC process in September 2006 and amended it in December 2009.It was considered necessary by MoEF to make available EIA guidance manuals for each of the development sector. Accordingly, at the instance of the MoEF, the Administrative Staff College of India, with the assistance of experts, undertook the preparation of sector specific Terms of Reference (TOR) and specific guidance manual for Building, Construction, townships and area development projects.

  • Preliminary Report Tropical Storm Bud 13 - 17 June 2000
Preliminary Report Tropical Storm Bud 13 - 17 June 2000 Jack Beven National Hurricane Center 21 July 2000 a. Synoptic history The origins of Bud can be traced to a tropical wave that emerged from the coast of Africa on 22 May. The wave generated little convection as it moved across the Atlantic and Caribbean. The wave moved into the eastern Pacific on 6 June, but showed few signs of organization until 11 June when a broad low pressure area formed a few hundred miles southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. The initial Dvorak intensity estimates were made that day. Further development was slow, as the low exhibited multiple centers for much of 11-12 June. As one center emerged as dominant, the system became a tropical depression near 0600 UTC 13 June about 370 n mi south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico (Table 1). The depression became Tropical Storm Bud six hours later as it moved northwestward. Bud reached a peak intensity of 45 kt early on 14 June while turning north-northwestward. The peak intensity was maintained for 12 hr, followed by slow weakening due to a combination of increasing vertical shear and cooler sea surface temperatures. Bud passed just northeast of Socorro Island on 15 June as a 40 kt tropical storm. It weakened to a depression on 16 June as it slowed to an erratic drift about 70 n mi north of Socorro Island. Bud dissipated as a tropical cyclone on 17 June about 90 n mi north-northeast of Socorro Island; however, the remnant broad low persisted until 19 June.

Invertebrate Distribution and Diversity Assessment at the U. S. Army Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site A report to the U. S. Army and U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service G. J. Michels, Jr., J. L. Newton, H. L. Lindon, and J. A. Brazille Texas AgriLife Research 2301 Experiment Station Road Bushland, TX 79012 2008 Report Introductory Notes The invertebrate survey in 2008 presented an interesting challenge. Extremely dry conditions prevailed throughout most of the adult activity period for the invertebrates and grass fires occurred several times throughout the summer. By visual assessment, plant resources were scarce compared to last year, with few green plants and almost no flowering plants. Eight habitats and nine sites continued to be sampled in 2008. The Ponderosa pine/ yellow indiangrass site was removed from the study after the low numbers of species and individuals collected there in 2007. All other sites from the 2007 survey were included in the 2008 survey. We also discontinued the collection of Coccinellidae in the 2008 survey, as only 98 individuals from four species were collected in 2007. Pitfall and malaise trapping were continued in the same way as the 2007 survey. Sweep net sampling was discontinued to allow time for Asilidae and Orthoptera timed surveys consisting of direct collection of individuals with a net. These surveys were conducted in the same way as the time constrained butterfly (Papilionidea and Hesperoidea) surveys, with 15-minute intervals for each taxanomic group. This was sucessful when individuals were present, but the dry summer made it difficult to assess the utility of these techniques because of overall low abundance of insects.
