Good afternoon, Toshiko-san! Akiyoshi: Good afternoon! Brown: At long last, I‟m so honored to be able to conduct this oral history interview with you. It‟s been about ten years since we last saw each other—we had a chance to talk at the Monterey Jazz Festival—but this interview we want you to tell your life history, so we want to start at the very beginning, starting [with] as much information as you can tell us about your family. First, if you can give us your birth name, your complete birth name. Akiyoshi: To-shi-ko. Brown: Akiyoshi. Akiyoshi: Just the way you pronounced. Brown: Oh, okay [laughs]. So, Toshiko Akiyoshi. Akiyoshi: Well, I think,…all names, as you know, Japanese names depends on the kanji [Chinese ideographs]. Different kanji means different [things], pronounce it the same way. And mine is “Toshiko,” [which means] something like “sensitive,” “susceptible,” something to do with a dark sort of nature. -

AMERICAN JAZZ MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORT | FISCAL YEAR 2014 OUR MISSION To celebrate and exhibit the experience of jazz as an original American art form through performance, exhibitions, education, and research at one of the country’s jazz crossroads: 18th & Vine. OUR VISION To become a premier destination that will expand the in!uence and knowledge of jazz throughout greater Kansas City and the world. OUR HISTORY Many years ago, 18th & Vine buzzed with the culture and commerce of Kansas City’s African-American community. The infectious energy of the people gave life to a new kind of music… and the music gave it right back to the people. Over the years the area languished, but the music and the musicians became legends! In 1989, the City of Kansas City, Missouri committed $26 million to a revitalization of 18th & Vine, led by the visionary and tireless efforts of then City Councilman and now Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II (former Kansas City Mayor.) By 1997, the city had a vibrant new complex housing the Kansas City Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, as well as the Horace M. Peterson III Visitor Center, with a newly refurbished Gem Theater across the street. Soon after, the Museum and its board and staff determined that the Kansas City Jazz Museum’s name should be changed to the American Jazz Museum to re!ect that the museum is the only museum in the world that is totally devoted to America’s true classical music -- jazz. The American Jazz Museum continues to ful"ll its mission by serving as a good caretaker of its collections and artifacts, as well as managing the Blue Room jazz club, the Gem Theater, the Changing Gallery, and the public spaces of the Museums at 18th & Vine. -

We are in Riverdale. We’re interviewing George Avakian. There’s so many things to say about you, I’m just going to say George Avakian and ask you first, why jazz? Avakian: I think it happened because I was born abroad, and among the things that came into my consciousness as I was growing up was American popular music, and then it drifted in the direction of jazz through popular dance bands, such as the Casa Loma Orchestra, which I heard about through the guys who were hanging around the home of our neighbor at Greenwood Lake, which is where we went in the summers. We had a house on the lake. Our next-door neighbors had two daughters, one of whom was my age and very pretty, Dorothy Caulfield, who incidentally is responsible for Holden Caulfield’s last name, because J. D. Salinger got to know her and was very fond of her, named Holden after her family name. These boys came from the Teaneck area of New Jersey. So it was a short drive to Greenwood Lake on a straight line between New York and New Jersey. They had a dance band, the usual nine pieces: three brass, three saxophones, three rhythm. -

TIPS FROM A SUPERINTENDENT I 1 #2 IN A SERIES Progress report on the beautiful new Playboy Club-Hotel Course in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin BY ART MUELLER, Superintendent (formerly superintendent at Tam O'Shanter Country Club, Niles, III.) 14 • GOLFDOM/1968 JULY The official groundbreaking ceremony took place in August of 1966, complete with Hugh Hefner and his Bunnies. The grubbing and staking began in September. By October of 1967, one year later, we were turning green and getting in shape for our projected June, 1968, opening day. By this time we had moved perhaps a million yards of material. The Club-Hotel complex includes 300 rooms, a variety of restaurants and bars (a la Playboy Club), two 18-hole golf courses (one designed by Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye, the other by Robert Bruce Harris), two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), stables, skiing, skeet and trapshooting and a landing strip for private aircraft. www.artskc.org PRESIDENT & CEO ORGANIZATION ArtsKC (Metropolitan Arts Council of Greater Kansas City) is a leading cultural agency for the greater Kansas City area created to support, promote, and advocate for the entire arts and culture sector. Following its move, one year ago, to a newly renovated building in the thriving Crossroads arts district, the organization has rebranded itself as ArtsKC and is poised to move forward and embrace its vision to unleash the power of the arts. Founded in 1999, the arts council was formed in conjunction with the attempt to gain regional funding from local tax sources. Though the public funding did not come to fruition, the Arts Council of Kansas City was formed by a pioneering group of individuals, led by Chair Shirley Bush Helzberg, who saw the need for advocacy and general funding for the regional cultural sector. ArtsKC currently serves five counties in the bi-state region: Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Arts in this region account for $250 million in economic impact, and the area boasts over 250 arts nonprofits and 350 arts related businesses. The creative economy accounts for 4.3% of all business, twice the national average. Internationally acclaimed arts venues and performance organizations include: the 285,000-square foot Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Kansas City Ballet, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the American Jazz Museum, and the Kansas City Art Institute.
