Polish Defensive War of 1939 an Overview After 80 Years
POLISH DEFENSIVE WAR OF 1939 AN OVERVIEW AFTER 80 YEARS 1939 – 2019 Alexander M. Jablonski Prologue The 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II brings many reflections. As a Pole by birth I had been brought up in the deep love to my home country and also to her armed forces as majority of men in my family served in the Polish Armed Forces and fought in both World Wars and in the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1919-1921. This is typical for many Polish families in the last century. World War II left a deep wound in the Polish nation. The defeat of September 1939 campaign was very special. The results of it are felt to the present day not only in every family but also in the life of the Polish nation as the whole. World War II was the largest military conflict in the contemporary world history. Military operations covered several continents and involved 61 countries and many nations. It divided the war into two fighting camps: axis forces of Berlin - Rome -Tokyo and allied forces (with some changes after 1941). The war lasted six years from September 1, 1939 (the German invasion of Poland) to September 4, 1945, marked by the surrender of Imperial Japan, and Europe by the capitulation of Germany on May 8 and 9, 1945. In different countries the beginning of this war is different and it depends on the date of actual access to the fight. The main reason of this war was the continuous German attempts to break the Versailles treaty, which established a new world and especially European order in 1919. -

The Apostles of Divine Mercy
The Apostles of Divine Mercy Helena Kowalska - an ordinary girl with a typical Polish surname. But can you really call another St. Faustina person “ordinary”? Or maybe we just use that word to classify others? Helena, not really trying to prove anything to anyone, showed the world how great potential is hidden in “ordinary” people. It depends on them whether they will use it or not. When Helena was 16, she left her family village to work in the city as a housemaid. Faustina - that was the name given to her by the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy, which she joined when she was 20 years old. She was remembered by the sisters: joyful, smiling, as if she was trying to share her happiness with everyone. Who would have thought that you could be smil- ing and be so happy while suffering?! And yet... Jesus, through painful spiritual experiences, was preparing her for a great mission that she was to undertake at a very young age. First, she had to get to know God’s merciful love, learn to trust Him, even in difficult situations, and to shape her life in the spirit of mercy towards others. Having learned this, she could convincing- ly proclaim Divine Mercy. To fulfill her mission, Sister Faustina received other gifts: she was able to see Jesus and talk to Him, to participate in the events of His life, and to take a peek beyond the mortal world - to see the reality of heaven, but also the reality of hell. This is just the beginning of a long list of her unique gifts. -

"Witold Pilecki. Confronting the Legend of the "Volunteer to Auschwitz""
Ewa Cuber-Strutyńska Witold Pilecki. Confronting the legend of the “volunteer to Auschwitz” Death had many opportunities to prematurely end the life of Witold Pilecki, who participated in the ight for independence during the war against the Bolsheviks and fought in World War II. Despite the risk he took, he managed to avoid death when he was at the front, when he found himself in the Auschwitz concentration camp and when he took part in the Warsaw Uprising. That it reached him in seemingly independent Poland and that it happened owing to, among others, his old brothers in arms should be considered a tragic paradox. Pilecki became a victim of the Communist regime, which brought death to him twice. The irst death, with a bullet in the back of his head, came on 25 May 1948; the second, symbolic one, involved killing the memory of Pilecki by censoring it for several dozen years. The memory of Pilecki was liberated and he was rehabilitated only after the fall of the regime that had brought death upon him. In the 1990s, we witnessed the publication of the irst biographies of Pilecki, which led to his return to the history of Poland and placed him in the pantheon of Poles who served their homeland to the greatest extent. Moreover, the past several years have shown a growing interest in Pilecki. His igure is now popularised by not only academic publications (which after all reach a rather small audience) but also various kinds of activities undertaken by state institutions, non-governmental organisations as well as football club fans.1 Among the increasing number of initiatives intended to honour Pilecki was even the idea to make an attempt at his beatiication.2 1 During a match between Śląsk Wrocław and Jagiellonia Białystok that took place on 3 May 2012, the supporters of Śląsk Wrocław prepared a setting including Pilecki’s portrait with a caption “Volunteer to Auschwitz” and the quote “Because compared with them Auschwitz was just a trile”. -

Peter Black Odilo Globocnik, Nazi Eastern Policy, and the Implementation of the Final Solution
www.doew.at – Dokumentationsarchiv des österreichischen Widerstandes (Hrsg.), Forschungen zum Natio- nalsozialismus und dessen Nachwirkungen in Österreich. Festschrift für Brigitte Bailer, Wien 2012 91 Peter Black Odilo Globocnik, Nazi Eastern Policy, and the Implementation of the Final Solution During the spring of 1943, while on an inspection tour of occupied Poland that included a briefing on the annihilation of the Polish Jews, SS Personnel Main Office chief Maximilian von Herff characterized Lublin District SS and Police Leader and SS-Gruppenführer Odilo Globocnik, in the following way: “A man fully charged with all possible light and dark sides. Little concerned with ap- pearances, fanatically obsessed with the task, [he] engages himself to the limit without concern for health or superficial recognition. His energy drives him of- ten to breach existing boundaries and to forget the boundaries established for him within the [SS-] Order – not out of personal ambition, but much more for the sake of his obsession with the matter at hand. His success speaks unconditionally for him.”1 Von Herff’s analysis of Globocnik’s reflected a consistent pattern in the ca- reer of the Nazi Party organizer and SS officer, who characteristically atoned for his transgressions of the National Socialist code of behavior by fanatical pursuit and implementation of core Nazi goals.2 Globocnik was born to Austro-Croat parents on April 21, 1904 in multina- tional Trieste, then the principal seaport of the Habsburg Monarchy. His father’s family had come from Neumarkt (Tržič), in Slovenia. Franz Globocnik served as a Habsburg cavalry lieutenant and later a senior postal official; he died of pneumonia on December 1, 1919. -
