Lessons from Burkina Faso's Thomas Sankara By
Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance in Contemporary Africa: Lessons from Burkina Faso’s Thomas Sankara By: Moorosi Leshoele (45775389) Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy At the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: Prof Vusi Gumede (September 2019) DECLARATION (Signed) i | P a g e DEDICATION I dedicate this thesis to Thomas Noel Isadore Sankara himself, one of the most underrated leaders in Africa and the world at large, who undoubtedly stands shoulder to shoulder with ANY leader in the world, and tall amongst all of the highly revered and celebrated revolutionaries in modern history. I also dedicate this to Mariam Sankara, Thomas Sankara’s wife, for not giving up on the long and hard fight of ensuring that justice is served for Sankara’s death, and that those who were responsible, directly or indirectly, are brought to book. I also would like to tremendously thank and dedicate this thesis to Blandine Sankara and Valintin Sankara for affording me the time to talk to them at Sankara’s modest house in Ouagadougou, and for sharing those heart-warming and painful memories of Sankara with me. For that, I say, Merci boucop. Lastly, I dedicate this to my late father, ntate Pule Leshoele and my mother, Mme Malimpho Leshoele, for their enduring sacrifices for us, their children. ii | P a g e AKNOWLEDGEMENTS To begin with, my sincere gratitude goes to my Supervisor, Professor Vusi Gumede, for cunningly nudging me to enrol for doctoral studies at the time when the thought was not even in my radar. -

Lora Snake (Philodryas Olfersii) Venom
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical 39(2):193-197, mar-abr, 2006 ARTIGO/ARTICLE Experimental ophitoxemia produced by the opisthoglyphous lora snake (Philodryas olfersii) venom Ofitoxemia experimental produzida pelo veneno da serpente opistoglifa lora (Philodryas olfersii) Alexis Rodríguez-Acosta1, Karel Lemoine1, Luis Navarrete1, María E. Girón1 and Irma Aguilar1 ABSTRACT Several colubrid snakes produce venomous oral secretions. In this work, the venom collected from Venezuelan opisthoglyphous (rear-fanged) Philodryas olfersii snake was studied. Different proteins were present in its venom and they were characterized by 20% SDS-PAGE protein electrophoresis. The secretion exhibited proteolytic (gelatinase) activity, which was partially purified on a chromatography ionic exchange mono Q2 column. Additionally, the haemorrhagic activity of Philodryas olfersii venom on chicken embryos, mouse skin and peritoneum was demonstrated. Neurotoxic symptoms were demonstrated in mice inoculated with Philodryas olfersii venom. In conclusion, Philodryas olfersii venom showed proteolytic, haemorrhagic, and neurotoxic activities, thus increasing the interest in the high toxic action of Philodryas venom. Key-words: Colubridae. Haemorrhage. Neurotoxic. Philodryas olfersii. Proteolytic activity. Venom. -

The book is written in a deliberately "nonacademic" style and covers a wide range of topics including breed ing, manipulation of the environment to induce breed ing, conservation offish genetic resources, and techniques used for marking and tagging broodstock. Résumé - L'ouvrage fait le point des connaissances actuelles en matière d'endocrinologie de la reproduction du poisson dans le souci d'une application bien concrète : la manipulation de cette fonction pour les besoins de la pisciculture. -

Sexual Dimorphism in the Asian Giant Forest Scorpion, Heterometrus Laoticus Couzijn, 1981
NU Science Journal 2007; 4(1): 42 - 52 Sexual Dimorphism in the Asian Giant Forest Scorpion, Heterometrus laoticus Couzijn, 1981 Ubolwan Booncham1*, Duangkhae Sitthicharoenchai2, Art-ong Pradatsundarasar2, Surisak Prasarnpun1 and Kumthorn Thirakhupt2 1Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Naresuan University, Phitsanulok 65000 Thailand 2Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok 10400 Thailand *Corresponding author. E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT Morphological characters of adult male and adult female giant forest scorpions, Heterometrus laoticus, in a mixed deciduous forest at Phitsanulok Wildlife Conservation Development and Extension Station showed sexual dimorphism. Among the observed characters, carapace width, chela length, chela width, telson length and shape of movable finger of adult male and female scorpions were obviously different. The pectines of males were also significantly longer, and the number of sensilla-bearing teeth in male scorpions was more than in females. Moreover, males had higher density of sensilla on the pectinal teeth than females. During the breeding season, mature males were mobile while mature females were mainly at their burrows. Keywords: Heterometrus laoticus, sexual dimorphism INTRODUCTION Sexual dimorphism is the difference in form between males and females of the same species. Sexual dimorphism, particularly sexual size dimorphism (SSD) has been observed in a large number of animal taxa (Blanckenhorn, 2005; Brown, 1996; David et al., 2003; Esperk and Tammaru, 2006; Herrel et al. 1999; Ozkan et al., 2006; Ranta et al. 1994; Shine, 1989; Walker and Rypstra, 2001 and Wangkulangkul, et al., 2005). Under the influence of natural and sexual selections, males and females often differ in costs and benefits of achieving some particular body sizes (Crowley, 2000; Gaffin and Broenell, 2001; Kladt, 2003; Mattoni, 2005). -
