Such protocols set rules for the orderly acquisition of samples to estimate community parameters and to establish comparisons between areas. These methods have been tested worldwide, providing useful data for inventory planning and optimal sampling allocation efforts. The taxonomic counterpart of biodiversity inventories has received considerably less attention. Species lists and their relative abundances are the only link between the community parameters resulting from a biotic inventory and the biology of the species that live there. However, this connection is lost or speculative at best for species only partially identified (e. g., to genus but not to species). This link is particularly important for diverse tropical regions were many taxa are undescribed or little known such as spiders. One approach to this problem has been the development of biodiversity inventory websites that document the morphology of the species with digital images organized as standard views.

  • Bromeliads As Biodiversity Amplifiers and Habitat Segregation of Spider Communities in a Neotropical Rainforest

Although bromeliads can be important in the organization of invertebrate communities in Neotropical forests, few studies support this assumption. Bromeliads possess a three-dimensional architecture and rosette grouped leaves that provide associated animals with a good place for foraging, reproduction and egg laying, as well as shelter against desiccation and natural enemies. We collected spiders from an area of the Atlantic Rainforest, southeastern Brazil, through manual inspection in bromeliads, beating trays in herbaceous+shrubby vegetation and pitfall traps in the soil, to test if: 1) species subsets that make up the Neotropical forest spider community are compartmentalized into different habitat types (i.e., bromeliads, vegetation and ground), and 2) bromeliads are important elements that structure spider communities because they generate different patterns of abundance distributions and species composition, and thus amplify spider beta diversity. Subsets of spider species were compartmentalized into three habitat types. The presence of bromeliads represented 41% of the increase in total spider richness, and contributed most to explaining the high beta diversity values among habitats. Patterns of abundance distribution of the spider community differed among habitats.

Pino s/n, Colonia El Roble, 39640, Acapulco, Guerrero, México. [email protected] RESUMEN. ABSTRACT. The state of Guerrero presents a great biodiversity of flora and fauna due to its topographic relief and diversity of biomes. These environmental conditions are reflected in arachnid diversity. The scorpions within the arachnids are cause of important problems of public health in the estate of Guerrero and therefore the project “Strategies to diminish the density and mobility of scorpion bites inside the home, in the municipality of Chilapa de Alvarez, Guerrero” was developed.

Labanon1* and Olga M. Nuñeza1 1Department of Biological Sciences Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology Andres Bonifacio Avenue, Tibanga, Iligan City, Philippines Corresponding Author's Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Salticidae is the largest and one of the most diverse spider families. Considering how species diversity patterns vary across spatial gradients, this study aimed to determine the species diversity of salticids along an elevation gradient in WMSU-EFA, La Paz, Zamboanga City. Collection methods were beat netting and vial tapping. Forty-four species under 26 genera were documented. Phintella piatensis was the most abundant species. Leaf litter and leaf surfaces/foliages were the most preferred microhabitats. Data analysis using PAST 3.0 showed highest species diversity at mid-elevation (H’=3.39), high diversity at high elevation (H’=3.02), and the lowest diversity at low elevation (H’=2.57), thus showing a hump-shaped pattern. An even distribution was recorded. However, factors such as vegetation structure and habitat complexity appear to influence species diversity aside from elevation itself. THE GENUS CHARINUS SIMON, 1892 (AMBLYPYGI: CHARINIDAE) ON THE ISLAND OF HISPANIOLA, GREATER ANTILLES Rolando Teruel Centro Oriental de Ecosistemas y Biodiversidad (BIOECO), Museo de Historia Natural "Tomás Romay". José A. Saco # 601, esquina a Barnada; Santiago de Cuba 90100; Cuba. ― [email protected] Abstract: The genus Charinus Simon 1892 is herein taxonomically revised for the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles. It is represented here by two species, both restricted to opposite parts of the southern watershed of the Bahoruco Range: Charinus dominicanus Armas & Pérez, 2001 in the eastern coastal foothill (Barahona Province) and Charinus bahoruco n. sp. in an intramontane ravine of the western portion (Pedernales Province). Both species are described, illustrated and compared in detail. Key words: Amblypygi, Charinidae, Charinus, new species, Hispaniola, Greater Antilles. E-mail: [email protected] 2Corresponding author Abstract Spider community inventories have relatively well-established standardized collecting protocols.
