  • How Do Advocacy Think Tanks Relate to Academic Knowledge? the Case of Norway
ISSN 0080-6757 Doi: 10.1111/1467-9477.12184 © 2020 The Authors. Scandinavian Political Studies published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of Nordic Political Science Association How Do Advocacy Think Tanks Relate to Academic Knowledge? The Case of Norway Johan Christensen† and Cathrine Holst* Think tanks often present themselves as contributors to a more reflective and informed politi- cal debate and their policy advice as based on knowledge and research. Yet, they also claim to be alternatives to university research and research institutes and often use knowledge and expertise to pursue explicitly ideological agendas. How do think tanks handle this balancing act of knowledge provision and ideological commitment? How do they relate to academia and what characterizes their approach to academic knowledge? The paper explores these questions through an investigation of the three main advocacy think tanks in Norway, based on an analy- sis of their organization, activities, staff and publications, and through interviews with think tank staff. The paper describes the specific ways in which these think tanks gather and utilize knowledge, and how they position themselves relative to academia. It also reflects on possible explanations for this pattern and on its normative implications. Introduction Think tanks have in recent decades emerged as a new type of political actor, challenging various aspects of existing policy-making arrangements. Notably, think tanks have challenged existing ‘knowledge regimes’, that is, the system of organizations and institutions for producing and incorporat- ing knowledge in policymaking (Campbell & Pedersen 2014). Think tanks have established themselves as an alternative channel for transmitting knowledge to policymakers, putting pressure on traditional channels such as bureaucratic policy advice and corporatist mechanisms and advisory bodies (Craft & Howlett 2013).

Political parties and welfare associations. Doctoral Dissertation in Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Umeå University, 2007. ISBN 978-91-7264-478-6 ISSN 1104-2508 ABSTRACT Scandinavian countries are usually assumed to be less disposed than other countries to involve associations as welfare producers. They are assumed to be so disinclined due to their strong statutory welfare involvement, which “crowds-out” associational welfare production; their ethnic, cultural and religious homogeneity, which leads to a lack of minority interests in associational welfare production; and to their strong working-class organisations, which are supposed to prefer statutory welfare solutions. These assumptions are questioned here, because they cannot account for salient associational welfare production in the welfare areas of housing and child-care in two Scandinavian countries, Sweden and Norway. In order to approach an explanation for the phenomena of associational welfare production in Sweden and Norway, some refinements of current theories are suggested. First, it is argued that welfare associations usually depend on statutory support in order to produce welfare on a salient level. Second, it is supposed that any form of particularistic interest in welfare production, not only ethnic, cultural or religious minority interests, can lead to associational welfare. With respect to these assumptions, this thesis supposes that political parties are organisations that, on one hand, influence statutory decisions regarding associational welfare production, and, on the other hand, pursue particularistic interests in associational welfare production.

  • Fighting for Chile
Fighting for Chile: Conflicts and Consensuses in the Norwegian Movement for Solidarity with Chile, 1973-1979 Ragnar Øvergaard Aas University of Oslo MITRA4095 — Master’s thesis in Modern International and Transnational History IAKH — Department of Archaeology, Conservation, and History Spring 2020 Abstract This thesis investigates the transnational solidarity movement for Chile as it evolved in the Norwegian context following the 1973 Chilean coup. Centring itself on the two main national umbrella organisations for the solidarity movement in the years between 1973 and 1979, Solidaritetskomiteen for Chile and Chileaksjonen i Norge, the thesis analyses the political conflicts that made a bipartisan approach to the solidarity cause become unviable. The coup in Chile struck at the core of the 1970s Zeitgeist, turning it into one of the paradigmatic events of the Global Cold War resulting in the crystallisation of a unique radical imaginary surrounding Chile. With a particularly forceful Maoist movement attempting to use this imaginary to disseminate their ideology through the solidarity movement and controlling the solidarity committee, the solidarity movement became a political arena in which the political and ideological conflicts of the era played themselves out. This resulted in the bifurcation of the movement and the existence of two rival solidarity committees competing for establishing themselves as the main national organisation for the movement. Moreover, the thesis seeks to further our understanding of the shift from an anti-fascist and anti-imperialist emphasis to one based on human rights occurring within the solidarity movement, regarding it chiefly as a consequence of the lack of clear consensuses among the political Left in the 1970s.

  • “Une Messe Est Possible”: the Imbroglio of the Catholic Church in Contemporary Latin Europe
Center for European Studies Working Paper No. 113 “Une Messe est Possible”: The Imbroglio of the Catholic Church 1 in Contemporary Latin Europe by Paul Christopher Manuel Margaret Mott [email protected] [email protected] Paul Christopher Manuel is Affiliate and Co-Chair, Iberian Study Group, Center for European Studies, Har- vard University and Professor and Chair, Department of Politics, Saint Anselm College. Margaret Mott is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Marlboro College. ABSTRACT Throughout the contemporary period, the Church-State relationship in the nation-states of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal – which we will refer to as Latin Europe in this paper – has been a lively source of political conflict and societal cleavage, both on epistemological, and ontological grounds. Epistemological, in that the person living in Latin Europe has to decide whether his world view will be religious or secular; ontological, in that his mortality has kept some sense of the Catholic religion close to his heart and soul at the critical moments of his human reality. Secular views tend to define the European during ordinary periods of life, (“métro boulot dodo,”) while religious beliefs surge during the extraordinary times of life (birth, marriage, death,) as well as during the traditional ceremonial times (Christmas, Easter). This paper will approach the ques- tion on the role of the Catholic church in contemporary Latin Europe by first proposing three models of church-state relations in the region and their historical development, then looking at the role of the Vatican, followed by an examination of some recent Eurobarometer data on the views of contemporary Catholics in each country, and finishing with an analysis of selected public pol- icy issues in each country.
