    OUP UNCORRECTED PROOF – FIRSTPROOFS, Mon Dec 07 2015, NEWGEN 3 Vajrayāna Traditions in Nepal Todd Lewis and Naresh Man Bajracarya Introduction The existence of tantric traditions in the Kathmandu Valley dates back at least a thousand years and has been integral to the Hindu– Buddhist civi- lization of the Newars, its indigenous people, until the present day. This chapter introduces what is known about the history of the tantric Buddhist tradition there, then presents an analysis of its development in the pre- modern era during the Malla period (1200–1768 ce), and then charts changes under Shah rule (1769–2007). We then sketch Newar Vajrayāna Buddhism’s current characteristics, its leading tantric masters,1 and efforts in recent decades to revitalize it among Newar practitioners. This portrait,2 especially its history of Newar Buddhism, cannot yet be more than tentative in many places, since scholarship has not even adequately documented the textual and epigraphic sources, much less analyzed them systematically.3 The epigraphic record includes over a thousand inscrip- tions, the earliest dating back to 464 ce, tens of thousands of manuscripts, the earliest dating back to 998 ce, as well as the myriad cultural traditions related to them, from art and architecture, to music and ritual. The religious traditions still practiced by the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley represent a unique, continuing survival of Indic religions, including Mahāyāna- Vajrayāna forms of Buddhism (Lienhard 1984; Gellner 1992). Lewis Ritual (Re-)Constructions of Personal Identity: Newar Buddhist Life-Cycle Rites and Identity among the Urāy of Kathmandu Introduction – Buddhist tradition and ritual Among contemporary Buddhists in both the Euro-American world and Asia, the very notion that ritual is formative of Buddhist identity, or could engender a transformative spiritual experience, is seen as outdated or even absurd. What is worthy in this tradi- tion, in this view, is the legacy of individual meditation practices passed down from its spiritual virtuosi and the fearless parsing of reality by its extraordinary sage-scholars. Most of the equally ancient daily and lifelong ritual practices in each regional forma- tion of Buddhism are destined to fade away. In this “Protestant Buddhist” perspective (Gombrich & Obeyesekere 1988; Schopen 1991), there is little to mourn from the exci- sion of superstitions, rituals, and habits that developed in previous centuries at Buddhist monasteries and temples, in towns and villages, and in families; since most people do not know the rationale of these religious acts, the exact meanings of the words they ut- ter or have uttered on their behalf, this modernist reduction of Buddhist tradition to its “true essence” is positive, even necessary. If in the past being a Buddhist entailed much more than sitting in meditation and joining in discourse on the intricacies of doctrine, the modern Buddhist no longer needs to carry on this vestigial baggage.

    1 1 Jhajjar Through Ages *Dr. Jagdish Rahar Abstract Jhajjar is 35 KMs. to the south of Rohtak and 55 KMs. west of Delhi. The name of district is said to be derived from its supported founder, One Chhaju and Chhaju Nagar converted into Jhajjar. Another derivation connects the name with a natural fountain called Jhar Nagar. A third derivation is from Jhajjar, a water vessel, because the surface drainage of the country for miles runs into the town as into a sense. Introduction : Unfortunately, the archeologists have paid little attention to the region of the present study, therefore, the detailed information ancient people of Jhajjar (Haryana) region is not known. However, now an attempt has been made to throw welcome light on the ancient cultures of Jhajjar on the basis of information collected from explorations and as well as from the excavations conducted in the different parts of Haryana. Seed of Colonization: Pre-Harappan : The archeological discoveries proved beyond doubt that the region under present study was inhabited for the first time in the middle of the third millennium B.C. by a food producing farming and pastoral community known as ‘Pre-Harappan’. During the course of village to village survey of this region, six sites were discovered by the researcher which speaks of Pre- Harappan culture namely Mahrana, Kemalgarh, SilaniKesho, Raipur, Silana II, Surha.1 All these sites have cultural identity with Kalibangan-I1, Siswal2, Banwali3, Mitathal-I4 and Balu-A5, where Pre-Harappan peoples in the middle of the third millennium B.C. mode their settlements.. Drawing upon the vocabulary of planetary appeasement and other birthday rituals of life-cycle sacraments and of dharanı̣ practice, they serve to protect and sanctify the celebrants and prolong their life. After offering a comprehensive overview of these rituals that registers local variations, this paper probes into their origins and function and, in the process, pays particular attention to the intricate ways in which the Buddhist and Hindu versions of these ceremonies relate to each other. I submit for your approval the following report and recommendation on (i) a proposed loan, and (ii) a proposed grant, both to Nepal for Building Climate Resilience of Watersheds in Mountain Eco-Regions Project. 2. The project1 aims to improve access to and enhance the reliability of water supply for domestic, livestock purposes and irrigation among communities living in the watersheds of Nepal river systems which are significantly vulnerable to climate change. The watersheds selected are climate sensitive and contain climate vulnerable communities. Project implementation will commence in two watersheds which lie in 6 hill districts in Far West Region: Achham, Baitaidi, Bajhang, Bajura, Dadeldhura and Doti. It may expand to adjacent watersheds. Access and reliability to water resources will be improved through a participatory program of integrated watershed management with interventions in upland areas to increase surface water storage and groundwater recharge, and to deliver water to locations where the community can use it. The communities in the project area will have more reliable water supplies in dry season. Major beneficiaries will be women and disadvantaged groups2.

    9 Hierarchy and Complementarity in N ewar Society IN A NUMBER of important areas of Newar social life notions of complementarity and status parity are accorded almost as much weight as are those of hierarchy and inequality.' I here suggest that though the kind of hierarchy that defines relations between the major sub-divisions of Newar society may be described as of the 'pure' caste variety, that is to say, based on clearly articulated notions of inherited ontological differences in human worth, within such sub-divisions hierarchy approximates more closely to that found typically in kin-based societies, that is to say, based on notions of differential seniority, age and achievement. COMMUNITY GOPALI OF CONCEPTS MATHEMATICAL INDIGENOUS Indigenous Mathematical Concepts ii 2 An Abstract of the Thesis This study is focused on the perception of mathematical knowledge among illiterate Gopali people of Chitlang village of Makwanpur district. The Gopalis taken for the study are recognized as gwala/ sapu in the social community of Nepal. They have the identity of first ruler of ancient Nepal. So, the study concerned with ethno- mathematics this community is the appropriate one. The traditional practices followed by them were the main area of the study. Especially the ethno-mathematical practices, existing in Gopali people were the sources of the study. The study is focused on their measurement system, numerical system, and geometrical practices among them. Illiterate children, women and men were considered for in-depth study and common practices were achieved from the religious as well as cultural activities in the group participation. The participant observation and interview were two tools adopted for the collection of information. The study was guided by ethno-methodology as well as grounded theory. The study concluded that the ethno-mathematical practices has supported in preserving their cultural identity. Naturally, the ethno-mathematics and culture are interlinked. The perception of mathematics preserved by Gopalis differs from the school mathematics. There is discontinuity between traditional and modern measurement system but similar practices are found still among the illiterate group.

    Nala and Countryside Tourism Biswo Nath Ulak* Abstract The behaviour of tourists in modern time shows an urgent need to promote countryside tourist destinations in Nepal. Tourism supply needs to be integrated and well coordinated, including all necessary amenities for an enjoyable stay similar to the rural village tourism at Ghandruk, Sarankot, Chitwan etc. at different part of Nepal. More marketing efforts should be made to attract target markets of tourists. Rural tourism, including agritourism, can play an important role to change the fate of Nala in Kavrepalanchowk District. Nala at present is facing the problem of unemployment and deterioration of natural and cultural qualities. The social and ecological aspect is of great importance rather than economic one. Proper development of such areas should be multidirectional. The increasing interest of domestic as well as international tourist in the villages with countryside tour has created a possibility of establishing Nala as a new destination of Countryside Tourism. These new initiations not only saves one of the historically important village ecologically and culturally but also pave the way for the development of entire community of villages providing new employment opportunity and mobilizing the local resources as well. The aim of this research work is to explore the opportunity of developing countryside tourism in Nala village with taming exclusive environmental and cultural values, as well as to present its role in the development of tourism in Nepal.
