Whether natural or man-made, these emergency situations can result in damage to property and endanger the health and safety of the general public. Guam regularly experiences natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and floods. Fires and disasters from hazardous materials are other occurrences that may endanger you and your property. Prepare Basic Supplies In the event of an emergency, you should be prepared to be self-sufficient for up to seven days. Preparing and maintaining an emergency supply of essential items can help ensure that you have adequate supplies to meet your and your family’s needs until help arrives. Basic emergency supplies include: One week supply of canned and dried food Cell Phone with charger, extra battery items Can Opener Drinking water – at least one gallon per Roll up mat and blankets person per day 3-day supply of change of clothes Flashlights and extra batteries Sturdy shoes Battery operated radio Lighter First Aid kit Formula (powder or liquid) Whistle Baby food 10 - 30 day supply of medications and Disposable diapers medical supplies Change of clothes, bibs, blankets Toilet tissue and personal hygiene supplies Baby soap, shampoo, powder, lotion Water for flushing toilet in the event water and wipes is shut off Disposable gloves/Hand sanitizer Trash bags, gloves, duct tape or masking tape, and plastic containers for storing Favorite toy, blanket, stuffed animal or items books Chlorine bleach for sanitizing Paper products (plates, spoons, forks, and paper towels) Propane stove and extra propane gas 5 Emergency Preparedness Make a Plan and Practice your Plan Emergency preparedness also means making a plan. Your plan should: Designate a place to meet if you and your family are separated from each other. Pick a primary and alternate contact number for you and your family to call if you are separated from each other. Establish a buddy system with other family members, friends, neighbors, or co-workers, and develop a plan on how you can help each other. Consider including your children in your planning, preparation, and other activities to help them understand the importance of emergency preparedness. Children learn from your example. Share your plan and your emergency contact list with members in your buddy system. Make a plan on how to secure your house in case you are not home or you are otherwise unable to secure your home. Identify another place to go to in case you need to evacuate. Establish your primary and alternate evacuation routes. If you use mobility aids, plan on how to take them with you and how to store extra aids at your alternate shelter, if possible. Pack a GO-KIT (Disaster Supply Kit) You should prepare a bag with your most essential items that you can grab if an emergency situation occurs and you need to evacuate right away. Be sure the bag is not too heavy for you or someone to carry. Your emergency GO-KIT should include: List of contact numbers Dried foods and bottled water Flashlight and extra batteries Whistle Small portable radio and extra batteries Basic toiletries and sanitary items Medications and medical supplies Important documents, including medical information It is a good idea to: Place your bag near an entry or exit way so it can easily be carried out. Put reminder notices in your calendar or appointment book to check and replace items in your bag at least every 6 months. Let people in your buddy system know where your GO-KIT is located. 6 Government Numbers Office of the Governor and Guam Legislature Lieutenant Governor of Guam Address: Address: 163 Chalan Santo Papa Ricardo J.
