Scrutiny of Socio-Political Issues and Trends in Bollywood Songs: an Analytical Study Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 Scrutiny of Socio-Political Issues and Trends in Bollywood Songs: An Analytical Study Mohd Aleem Khan1 PhD Scholar, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Manipal University Jaipur, Jaipur (303007), Rajasthan, India Email- [email protected] Dr. Subhash Kumar2 Associate Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Manipal University Jaipur, Jaipur (303007), Rajasthan, India Email: [email protected] Abstract- Hindi cinema have socio-political elements in their song content. These dramatic and aesthetic themes often contain religious, political, social, economic issues in a form of metaphor, satire or symbolism. In this study, we seek some answers by analysing the issues raised by lyricist in different ages, do featured songs truly objectified issues of India or not; was it written on behalf of the public’s mood and perceptions. The study also deals with Marxist media theory which argues media is used to show and support the views of ruling class and limit the views on issues that are important to be discussed in society. The methodology used in this study is analytical in nature and selection of film is limited to songs of social issues by purposeful sampling using IMDB rating list. Keywords: Bollywood, Music, Lyrics, Social-Issues, Trends. I. INTRODUCTION Cinema reflects the society by expressing and showing the various ideas, opinions & trends. Communication researchers and academicians commonly define its broader spectrum which covers its purpose of surveillance, information and entertainment. Societal discourse is an important aspect of cinema, it has potential to inform, enlighten, awaking people and also makes a deep impact on viewers in conscious and sub-conscious state of mind. We see many political movements globally which have been influenced by socio-political ideas and thoughts of the films and poetry [1]. Song writer Tori Amos[2] believes “the dangerous thing about listening [to music] is that you don’t really know the effect it’s going to have”. Listening and watching songs is an essential part of everyday life and considered as a powerful tool for cultural memories particularly in India. Lyrical activism has a long journey that holds possibilities to influence listener’s belief, perceptions, choices by offering messages and reflected the mood of the society about the issues[3]. The issues of social concern are not being covered in contemporary society profusely Now most of the songs are produced by Mumbai’s commercial film industry known as Bollywood and we heard these hindi songs in our everyday life form public transport to hospital. Some lyrics can also be considered as a form of social commentary. Hence, the purpose of the study is to analyse the socio- political content in Hindi songs during 2009-2018. Volume XII, Issue III, 2020 Page No: 2957 Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology Issn No : 1006-7930 The time framework for the study is the tenure of both UPA and NDA governments. Both political parties had used songs such as ‘Jai ho from film Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Aarambh ho Prachand ‘ from film Gulaal’ in their election campaign[4] [5]. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK The study deals with Marxist Media theory [6] which argues that media is used to show and support the views of ruling class and limit the views and ideas that are important to be discussed in society. Marxists believe that the media simply provides benefit to those who control it and are not mirroring or reflecting the conflicts or problems of common civil society. They found that it is highly apparent in advertising and film content, where products and ideology placement are shown to bring and sell dreams, fantasies about life fulfilment. They also notice ‘agenda setting’ in society through the media by ruling class. II. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES 1. To understand the reflection of socio-political Issues in Bollywood songs during 2009- 2018. 2. To examine Trends by Hindi songs. 3. To analyse the dominant values of society in Bollywood lyrical discourse. III. RESEARCH QUESTIONS 1. What type of issues has been raised by Bollywood songs between 2009-2019? 2. Have Hindi songs reflected societal trends? IV. METHODOLOGY Rhetorical and Quantitative Content Analysis method has been applied for the scrutiny of societal trends through Hindi Songs. Sample of song on social issues is complicated because it has different perspectives and definitions. Hence, specific category of songs had been selected. Sampling method for collecting data has been chosen purposefully. Samples have been collected in two segments of last ten years: Lyrics written between 2009-2013 and 2014-2018 of each year. Selection of movies was based on best movies of each year by using IMDB rating list. The necessary data for study is already available and accessible. All the information is collected from Films, Songs, Albums, Interviews, News, Books and Journals. Between 2009 to 2014 (UPA-II) the narrative about India was that the country was suffering from corruption, poverty, unemployment and captured by corrupt politicians and government was hit by one scandal after another, its lost media support and public confidence as well but it was good year for Hindi film industry. Movies such as 3 idiots, Gulaal, Delhi 6, Kaminey, Dev D diverted audience with its humour and philosophical diction. The year had lyricist Gulzar teamed up with Vishal Bharadwaj and AR Rehman, Piyush Mishra teamed with Anurag Kashyap and adding some memorable songs to the world of Hindi film music and was weaving his magic with his sound and melodies[7]. In the same year the congress party bought A.R. Rahman Popular Song ‘Jai Ho’ from film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and made the theme song for its political campaign in Lok Sabha Election held in 2009, from this song A.R. Rehman and Gulzar both got honour by The Academy Award (Oscar) for their work in Slumdog Millionaire on global platform. In May 2009, results of the general election were declared and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Indian National Congress won 262 seats for the fifteenth Lok Sabha. (Hindustan Times12). In 2010, Indian political scenario was not so decent in the light of scams and scandals but movies like Udaan, Raajneeti, LSD, Peepli live, Raavan, Ishqia, My name is Khan, Dabangg etc. had full dose of entertainment for the masses. Meanwhile, UPA government had experienced horrible charge of corruption and scandal one after another; Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) alleged that there had been large irregularities in in allocation of 2G spectrum licensing in 2007-08 by telecom minister A. Raja and DMK MP Kanimojhi [PTI13]. In the same year when UPA-2 was facing 2G scam allegation, another storm was hit in a form of loopholes in various projects related to Commonwealth Games which was held in New Delhi, 2010 [ET14].

Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica 66 Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica: Remediating the “Bollywoodization” of Indian TV News Sukhmani Khorana Lecturer University of Wollongong Wollongong, Australia [email protected] Introduction: Evolution of “Bollywoodization” in Indian TV news In the third edition of her pioneering book on the Indian media business, Vanita Kohli-Khandekar makes the following observation: There are two media segments that define the contour, body and tastes of the Indian market. Television is one of them, the other being film. Both have a mesmerising hold over Indian audiences―and even over investors and advertisers.1 This article begins with this note because of the increasingly central place occupied by television in the Indian media sphere and the uniquely Indian context of the mutual interdependence of the television and film industries. While television has appropriated Hollywood film genres since its inception,2 in India, popular film culture is increasingly drawing on the pre-eminence of satellite television. A grasp of these facets of the subcontinent’s television story is essential before examining how TV news has taken on discursive and practice-based elements of the nation’s popular film culture, Bollywood. This will be undertaken through a close textual analysis of two recent Bollywood films, Peepli Live (2010) and No One Killed Jessica (2011). Both feature television journalism as an important narrative catalyst, or a remediator for the socio-political issues faced by the protagonist(s). In doing this, the films themselves turn into a remediation device for the Bollywoodization of news on Peepli Live and No One Killed Jessica 67 Indian television.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Life is struggle, sacrifice, and worthy. On the other side, the people say that life means study or effort. People must struggle their right and obligation too. The struggling, sacrificing, and affording are one of requisites for acquiring their appreciations, dreams, and aims. The appreciation is the last destination that is brought into reality by the people. So everyone needs appreciation in their life. The appreciation is like a dream, goal or destination. It is a soul in proving something done by people. Appreciation can give the spirit and energy for someone in reaching their aim in their life. Many people that have acquired appreciation, they would be proud and satisfy both for themselves and another people in surrounding. However, sometimes the people have wrong ways to prove their appreciations. Appreciation need includes self actualization of human needs. Self actualization is one fundamental need in humanistic psychological theory. This need is part of hierarchy need in humanistic psychological theory. A. in Indian Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jan. 2, 2019 Revised: Feb. 28, 2019 Accepted: Ma r. 28, 2019) Abstract This study investigates the representations of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies from 2008 to 2018. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies.

  • Jolly Llb – a Review
JOLLY LLB – A REVIEW Written by ANIRUDHA Saturday, 16 March 2013 03:22 The trailer and the punch lines were a lure enough to catch the movie. Also the star cast of Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani known for their comic timing were a good reason to go to the theater to have a good time. It could be defined as a sharply made spoof that really does not switch into a preachy mode. The reality of judiciary system in our country is not hidden from any one, but the presentation and performance is what makes the movie a worthy watch. Talking about the story, young lawyer Jagdish Tyagi aka Jolly played by Arshad Warsi is frustrated with his legal career going nowhere. He leaves Meerut and moves to Delhi in search of thriving opportunities. Easy popularity comes knocking on his door when he tries to encash some residual fame off a Land Cruiser hit and run case fashioned on the similar BMW case of Sanjeev Nanda by filing a PIL. Pitted against the very best lawyer Rajpal played by Boman Irani who shrewdly scores over Jolly by virtue of his obvious position, stature he has attained in his profession and experience, this fight isn’t an easy one. Jolly suddenly finds himself down from every side with manipulations and threats coming his way. Truth demands strength so can Jolly uncover the intricacies of the case, and fight the likes of such powerful men? What unfolds is a fascinating legal drama, harsh face offs and a strong ending. Now coming down to the performances, the script is not a very elaborate one, but surely leaves room for a brilliant screenplay to flow.

German rights for Peepli Live acquired before official Berlinale Special Screening Mumbai, 15 February 2010: After rave audience and critics reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, Peepli Live, directed by Anusha Rizvi, co‐produced by UTV Motion Pictures & Aamir Khan Productions has just been picked up by specialty film German distribution company Rapid Eye Movies. Theatrical release for Peepli Live in Germany is planned for third quarter of 2010. Rapid Eye has also acquired the Home Video and Television for the territory. Stephan Holl, founder of Rapid Eye Pictures commented on his acquisition, "We are thrilled to bring to the German audience a true Indian art house film that entertains whilst telling a serious story" Amrita Pandey, VP, International Distribution and Syndication, UTV Motion Pictures, said, "Rapid Eye is an ideal distribution partner for us to plan a theatrical Germany release for the film." Peepli Live is Anusha Rizvi’s first feature. It is a fresh and intelligently spun satire of the real‐life epidemic of farmer suicides that have plagued India for the past decade. With a deft hand, Rizvi infuses humor and buoyancy in depicting this tragic predicament, illuminating the true colors of many corridors of Indian society. Peepli Live, is the first Indian film ever to be selected at the Sundance Film Festival (World Cinema Dramatic competition) and is also screening in out of competition at the Berlin Film Festival. Critics who have watched the film say: “A peppy screwball comedy with elements of social satire... Debuting writer‐director Anusha Rizvi manages to wrest a lively feature out of a gravely serious issue, capturing the desperation of India's village farmers, as well as the nation's shift from agriculture to industrialization, without losing sight of the entertainment principle.” – Rob Nelson, VARIETY “A comic gem set in India's beleaguered rural communities..
