It seeks to understand what caused the disunity and who is responsible in uniting the Muslim Ummah in Uganda. The study design followed a qualitative approach of interviews with five (5) old key Muslims in central Buganda aged 65-80 from both fractions of Kibuli and Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and one focus group of forty (40) participants. Findings identified themes i.e., every body’s responsibility, negotiation between Muslims, Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU), respect for each other, Muslim constitution, change in generation, elites, discourage tribalism, family is the key and intervention of government. This manuscript offers policy makers and researchers various avenues on how to address Muslim leadership disunity in Uganda. The paper offers a genuine reflection on theories of conflict management avoidance vs problem solving. It offers an understanding of what has not worked and what can work. This new field of legal deduction concerns itself with the full range of issues that inevitably confront Muslims living in Western countries. POLITICAL THEOLOGIES IN LATE COLONIAL BUGANDA Jonathon L. Earle Selwyn College University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2012 Preface This dissertation is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except where specifically indicated in the text. It does not exceed the limit of 80,000 words set by the Degree Committee of the Faculty of History. i Abstract This thesis is an intellectual history of political debate in colonial Buganda. It is a history of how competing actors engaged differently in polemical space informed by conflicting histories, varying religious allegiances and dissimilar texts. Methodologically, biography is used to explore three interdependent stories. First, it is employed to explore local variance within Buganda’s shifting discursive landscape throughout the longue durée. Second, it is used to investigate the ways that disparate actors and their respective communities used sacred text, theology and religious experience differently to reshape local discourse and to re-imagine Buganda on the eve of independence. Finally, by incorporating recent developments in the field of global intellectual history, biography is used to reconceptualise Buganda’s late colonial past globally. Due to its immense source base, Buganda provides an excellent case study for writing intellectual biography. From the late nineteenth century, Buganda’s increasingly literate population generated an extensive corpus of clan and kingdom histories, political treatises, religious writings and personal memoirs. As Buganda’s monarchy was renegotiated throughout decolonisation, her activists—working from different angles— engaged in heated debate and protest. -

By analyzing both intentions and consequences, it is argued that the phenomenon has attributes to be condemned and those to be celebrated. Focusing on issues of gender, education, and language, it provides an introductory survey of the multifaceted implications of the colonial era. Upon critical analysis, it becomes clear that the dominant narrative does not reflect the proper level of nuance, meaning that the average observer sees the colonial era as something wholly good or completely bad. -

Islam advanced slowly and gradually along a network of caravan routes through trading contacts with some African peoples, spread by ordinary adherents, Kiswahili-speaking merchants, who penetrated the interior of Eastern Africa in search of ivory and slaves. Economic and trading interests and activities also played a role in the spread of Islam at the southernmost tip of the African continent. Many slaves and political prisoners sent to the Cape during the period 1652 to 1795 were Muslims. Even though the idea of a comparison between Eastern and Southern Africa may arouse contradictory reactions among students of Islam, an attempt will be made at an appraisal of similarities and differences in the spread of Islam, Islam’s contribution to literacy, education and intellectual development, and challenges lslam had to face under colonialism. Encountering Islam and Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa: from Orality to Literacy … ENCOUNTERING ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: FROM ORALITY TO LITERACY AND TO THE RISE OF HISTORICAL WRITING IN THE KINGDOMS OF BUGANDA AND BUNYORO* Viera PAWLIKOVA-VILHANOVÁ Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences Klemensova 19, 813 64 Bratislava, Slovakia [email protected] Though the existence of script in some regions of Africa, in ancient Egypt, Kush, Nubia or the Ethiopian highlands led to the spread of literacy and of written knowledge, orality was the norm in many African societies in the past, and in much of Africa, historical and other knowledge remained to be constructed, maintained and conveyed by word of mouth, in poetic, musical and dramatic settings and graphic symbolism closely related to speech. Cultural contacts with Islam and later on with Christianity brought writing systems, Arabic and Latin scripts, literacy replaced orality and prompted the production of written knowledge. The arrival of Islam and somewhat later of Christianity into the kingdoms of Buganda and Bunyoro brought literacy in its train and led to the development of a rich tradition of historical writing. One of the most significant areas of Islamic penetration in East and Central Africa was the Kingdom of Buganda, where Islam predated the arrival of Christianity by several decades and secured a strong foothold. Buganda was won to Christianity amidst much turmoil and bitter struggle between the adherents of Islam and of two forms of Christianity, represented by the Anglican Church Missionary Society and Roman Catholic White Fathers, for the dominant position in the kingdom. Despite severe defeats suffered in Buganda in the late 1880s and throughout the 1890s Islam recovered and survived as a minority religion. However, the latent fear of Islam influenced the language policy and mined the prospects of Kiswahili in Uganda. “I have, indeed, undermined Islamism so much here that Mtesa has deter mined henceforth, until he is better informed, to observe the Christian Sabbath as well as the Muslim Sabbath,...” boasted the famous traveller Henry Morton Stanley when describing his visit to the Kingdom of Buganda in April 1875.1 Though present on the East African coast for nearly a thousand years, Islam only began its expansion into the interior in the nineteenth century.2 One of the most significant areas of Islamic penetration in East and Central Africa was the 1 Stanley, H.M.: Through the Dark Continent.
