This collection is an impeccable and crystalline assortment of beautiful music from the deep southwestern provinces of Menabe and Tulear in Madagascar. "… heavy air, summoned spirits, and a transformative energy collapse natural constraints of place. The Malagasy call this mingling of forces 'maresaka' -- a permeating vibrational aura. Maresaka pulls you in and places you in the moment, to participate through a saturation of sounds, smells, and colors. " --Charles Brooks, 2015. Various: Music of Xinjiang: Kazakh and Uyghur Music of Central Asia SUBFLP 101 / 0613505500052 / label: Sublime Frequencies / format: LP / China – Traditional Limited-edition LP with full-size insert of text and photographs by compiler Laurent Jeanneau. Xinjiang (Eastern Turkestan) is China's biggest province. The musical landscape here is one of the world's richest. The Uyghur and the Kazakh are the two main ethnicities represented on these recordings. The Kazakh (nomadic) and Uyghur (agricultural) have multiple linguistic ties. Much of this music shares many influences from the Arab world, Turkey, and Persia. The sound is that of the Islamic tradition stretching from Turkey to the most eastern frontier of the Chinese empire. These recordings and performances feature some of the area's greatest musicians playing instruments like the satar, tanbur, dotar, rawab, rushtar, and dongbra, among many others. Some excerpts here. Xango Music Distribution Release #3 – 2016 Pagina | 1 The Nile Project: Aswan NP 2013 / 0887516988738 / label: Nile Project / format: CD / North-Africa – Popular In January 2013, the Nile Project brought together 18 musicians from Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt to experiment with a collaborative creative process that would last 10 days. Each musician brought 2 songs. In the mornings, they taught one another their respective musical languages; in the afternoons, they played musical chairs in duos, trios, and quartets. On the 5th day, they performed for each other. The puzzle was all there. It was time to organize the piece into one seamless tapestry and perform it in Aswan and Cairo 4 days later. This recording from their first live concert showcases the result of this rich encounter. With: Alsarah, Dina el Wedidi and many more. New album expected in 2016!. Listen to ‘Salaam Nubia’. She started her solo career in 2005 and during the past decade, it has been marked by a firm and coherent musical path. Her music has no frontiers, it´s a music where tradition walks along with modernity where fado, chanson française, jazz manouche, bossa nova or latin music get together under a pop sensibility, refined, elegant and sophisticated. Mr Zarko: Electric Gypsy Disco Noise PYR 22 / 8712618001462 / label: Pyromusic / format: CD / Serbia – Balkan Beats Mr Žarko was born in the city of Čačak in the heartland of Serbia. In the Balkans, people from the Čačak area enjoy a peculiar reputation, partly explained by Mr Žarko as “folkloristical madness”: a very special form of insanity which he imported to Berlin several years ago. There the Serbs unique musical blend proved a hit with the club crowds and festivalgoers. Together with his five (or more) band members from Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Germany he performs his own compositions- “songs of laughter, pain, dances and tears” – often adding a psychedelic twist. Authentic balkan brass-riffs and melodies are built on grooves drawing from all corners of the globe. Electric Gipsy Disco Noise! Check out the album teaser. Joaquin de Sola: Principio FDLI 2 / 8435383620330 / label: Flamenco de la Isla / format: CD / Spain – Flamenco Joaquim de Sola is a young singer with a voice that reminds us of old times. He has a way of charming his audience with grace, by expressing both sadness and happiness in his voice. Not afraid of tradition he performs alegrías, bulerías, fandangos, solea and Chuflillas de Cadiz with a fresh air. Listen to a track. Erik Marchand: 5ed Round INNA 11518 / 3521383433263 / label: Innacor / format: CD / France/Brittany – Folk Erik Marchand has initiated his Breton Kreiz Breizh Akademi. The compositions of this academy orchestra corresponds to the western classical music tradition, but also connects the middle-Eastern string orchestra’s aesthetics to the Breton vocal repertoire, thanks to micro-tonality. With this atypical orchestration and an artistic process involving improvised music, the 12 musicians create a new genre, rearranging geographical and temporal marks. Arrangements and compositions were undertaken in collaboration with great masters from other musical cultures: Fawaz Baker, Iiad Eymour, Ross Daly, Philippe Le Corff, Loukas Metaxas, Jacky Molard, Dominique Pifarély, Camel Zekri, Erik Marchand. Watch the beautiful intro for the project. Lefteris Moumtzis: Now Happiness LD 5 / 0702811531222 / label: Louvana / format: CD / Cyprus – Popular This is the first solo album by Lefteris Moumtzis. With this recording he is attempting a more acoustic, minimal approach, giving more attention and care to the songs and their stories. It is a soothing record that flows effortlessly from beginning to end, leaving the listener with a calming and positive feeling. Stylistically, the songs borrow elements from folk, jazz, ambient and classical music. Lefteris sings and plays guitar, piano and synth while Dimitris Hadjizisis lends guitar on a few tracks. Listen to the title track.
