Moorman Luanda is known for its late-night parties (or farras) that trail into the wee hours and include a bowl of muzongue (fish broth with pieces of cassava, fish, and chili peppers eaten in order to counteract the impending exhaustion and hangover). On November 11, 2001, the twenty-sixth anniversary of Angola's independence, I was invited to an event called Caldo de Dipanda (Independence Broth) that was to begin at 7 a.m. at the National Radio Station. It was a special independence day version of a bi-monthly live broadcast event hosted by a Sunday morning radio show (Caldo de Poeira, or Dust Broth) where they invite musicians of the older generation to gather, play music together, eat, and reminisce. My fiance (now husband) and I and a friend, tambourine in hand, arrived half an hour after the scheduled beginning to find some 30 people already gathered. We were directed to a table and served typical Angolan dishes—beans with palm oil, muzongue, boiled cassava and sweet potato—and our choice of beverage. The emcee was already playing a variety of old tunes and inviting various musicians up to the stage to sing their golden oldies. Enthusiastic hugs and hellos abounded in the audience and people were obviously quite pleased to be together. Almost all the guests in attendance were musicians in their 50s or 60s and, with a few exceptions, they were all men. -

I investigate how this cultural production reflects the changing Portuguese nation, where the bound- aries between postcolonial Portugal and its former African colonies, as well as the notions of what constitutes “being African” or “being European”, are being redefined. Truth, Justice and Reparation in the Western Sahara
Truth, justice and reparation This summary was written with the difficult goal of condensing the in the Western Sahara report titled “The oasis of memory”, the complete version of which contains over 1000 pages in two volumes. The report includes an analysis of human rights violations in the Western Sahara since 1975 based on interviews and testimonies gathered from 261 victims. It The Oasis of Memory also analyzes the impact on individual people, families and women, the forms of resistance of the victims, and, finally, the demands for Carlos Martín Beristain truth, justice and reparation for victims as well as the responses from the state of Morocco. LES OBJECTIFS • Permettre la découverte d’un large éventail d’expressions musicales d’ici et d’ailleurs, anciennes ou contemporaines. • Sensibiliser le public le plus large (et particulièrement les enfants et les jeunes) à d’autres cultures, modes de vie, traditions, réalités sociales, etc. grâce à une rencontre vivante à dimension humaine avec les artistes. • Être un outil performant adapté à toute démarche culturelle, éducative, citoyenne, qu’elle soit portée par un enseignant, une équipe éducative, une structure culturelle, un mouvement associatif, etc. • Contribuer à l’épanouissement artistique et à la reconnaissance professionnelle de jeunes talents. • Proposer aux enfants et aux jeunes un regard actif sur le monde de la musique et les aider à développer leur sens critique. Vanspauwen Instituto de Etnomusicologia, New University of Lisbon, Portugal Approaching music as a point of social connection in the post-colonial city of Lisbon, where cultural entrepreneurs deploy the political concept oflusofonia, this study examines the ways in which local migrant musicians from Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOPJ, as well as Brazil and East Timor, position themselves in this context. In general, the study shows that there is a lack of recognition of the contribution they make to the expressive culture of the Portuguese capital, and this is related to national preconceptions. Surprisingly, despite several existing coun ter-discourses regarding lusofonia, all interviewed musicians do see some future relevance in this concept. They appeal to both supranational institutions and national governments, asking for structural support in order to promote and disseminate all the expressive culture of Portuguese speaking African countries, indicating that the contribution of migrant musicians from these countries should be considered as an integral part of Portugal's cultural expression and heritage. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork done mainly in the Saharawi refugee camps and the development of “Portraits of Saharawi Music” (2013–2014), a collaborative music archiving and research project in partnership with the British Library and the Saharawi Ministry of Culture, this article analyses issues in the political realities for Saharawi refugees from the perspective of the musicians and the cultural authorities in the refugee camps. In addition, it explores methodological and ethical issues derived from the uses of political and cultural activism as an ethnomusicological research method. It examines the interactions of the ideologies, motivations and personal relationships of the researcher, the musicians and the institutions involved in this recording project, focusing on the selection of repertoire as an activist act and the impact of doing advocacy research on an extremely vulnerable social group as the Saharawi refugee community. In agreement with basic principles of social responsibility of academia, it supports the role of “activist researcher”; but it cautions that it is essential for researchers to understand how relations of knowledge and power are produced, perpetuated, and challenged in specific situations of conflict, in order to turn their research into a true collaborative action. -
