2 SOCIETY NOTICE BOARD

Editor’s Comments: Well last month might be the shortest but certainly it has not been a quiet one, what with three severe storms resulting in damaging winds and appalling ongoing flooding and the continuing corona virus spread. Hopefully none of you have been affected though the former seems to be a regular occurrence now and the latter has yet to have its full effect in the UK. Though many parts of the UK were and are continuing to suffer from the heavy rain our north eastern corner missed all the storms, being close to the eye of all and in the lea of the Grampians. In fact we have had below average rainfall and hardly any snow. Though we have cooler temperatures it has mostly been gloriously sunny throughout February and that has continued into March. The weather has badly affected both mainline and preserved railways with either fallen trees / debris on lines or flooding with Wales particularly badly hit again. The and Cambrian routes to and Pwllheli suffered washouts and additional coastal erosion on the latter. KWV and EMB were both flooded. A few incidents of services running into trees has resulted in damage to stock including bubble car 55032 on the and an HST power car between Huntly and Insch near me. In fact I had gone out to photograph this very eastbound service at Keith but I had failed to check my camera battery which was flat, only discovering that on the platform !!

Other momentous railway news is that, as thought, HS2 has been given the green light which will see the railways create work for many sectors and opportunities for the next 20 years. In addition to the new government making one big railway decision the most interesting is the £500 million fund to develop new lines / stations in a reversal of the Beeching cuts. Clearly framed by the need to address climate change it is a welcome step and local MPs, authorities and community groups are being urged to propose ideas. Other big events are that Northern is now in the hands of the DfT and Grand Central livery is now appearing on Cl.90s.

Our 2020 visits diary is now almost full with another private visit added to Scunthorpe Steelworks / Appleby Frodingham Railway. The only hope is that the corona virus outbreak does not cause cancellations but with a fast moving situation it is even more important you make sure you give full contact details when you book. The next event is our AGM at the Railway Institute on Sat. 14th March so see you there if you are going. Sadly because of a myriad of issues not least I am knackered, as you will understand below, we are not now going to do the mammoth 8 day round trip required to attend the Swanage Diesel Gala at the end of April. With potential restrictions possibly in the pipeline it is also sensible to not commit to booking and we have the added worry of our continuing care of my Mom.

On another personal note I really appreciate the many members who have thanked me for the work done as I am sure a few still don’t appreciate that on top of producing two issues of TRACKS (144 pages) the Jan / Feb only finished by doing an all nighter, I was solely responsible for compiling the 5 new books now available and processing the orders which have been pouring in. As of the end of Feb. orders are up 89 on 2019 involving 172 more books meaning a total of 489 orders and 807 books have had to be processed. All of the aforementioned has taken the whole of Jan and Feb but backing this up is a myriad of other unseen background work required to ensure accurate books, info and stock. These have included ordering more sundries, designing adverts for Railways Illustrated and Rail Express, book cover designing, getting quotes, revising Society forms for ordering, membership and TRACKS renewal forms plus co-ordinating dates with Tony for the mammoth visit itinerary plus making sure the website was up to date involving redesigning PayPal links etc. All of this has involved a lot of juggling and thinking ahead with lead times with 2150 emails received and sent since the start of 2020, 36 a day on average !! The point of this is not to rattle my own chain but to hopefully get through to those few members who then query why there is delay with an order or release of TRACKS. I shouldn’t get irritated but when asked recently why TRACKS was late (only 2 days for the pdf) when tackling the above list, well I mean !! It is hard to reiterate enough but this is supposed to be a voluntary hobby done in spare time and were I still employed, had a family or a less than extremely understanding other half, it is highly unlikely the success of ICRS in the last 10 years would have been achieved.

You may have noticed a printing error with the Jan / Feb issue of TRACKS in that the first and last 8 pages were printed too high. I can only apologise but having put the effort in to produce good content I find it galling to see a badly printed result. Printers suitably admonished.

3 Due to the pressures mentioned above and the vagaries of printing schedules and upcoming bank holidays I am no longer going to specify the exact date when TRACKS will be posted out, suffice to say it is approx 10-14 days from when I send to printers and send out pdf copies. That way I can never be ‘late’. If you want to ensure you get a first look at visits then add your name to the email list for receiving a pdf even if you then wait to read the mag in print which is still the preferred option for most members. I will say when the pdf is due as I will either hit the date or just be a few days over as I was again with this issue. Can I again PLEASE plead with all photographic contributors, as much as I value every photo, remember to add all details either ideally in the filename or in the email. A few seconds by you checking this prior to sending, turns into many minutes and extra work for me chasing missing up info.

Publications / Sundries: In order to produce the best books on the market with as near 100% accuracy as at the date of release is a herculean feat and I nearly did it. Unfortunately checking the thousands of items of varied data inevitably means some errors get through so a few location changes that happened prior to the 1st Feb and picked up are shown in STOCK CHANGES. Unfortunately a cut & paste hiccup at the start of the Cl.31s means 31018 is missing from the 31/0s whist 5518 is shown as 31/0 instead of 31/1. It is annoying but I managed to rectify the situation so that both Pocket Book (wire bound) and Locomotives were amended prior to further printing. I couldn’t do anything about the PB (spine) as that is printed in one batch. A couple of duplicated numbers also slipped through the proof reading, 47395 & 377468 (BI) but that is not such an issue (amended for Summer Eds). Another last moment slip up, post proof reading, was I somehow managed to use the same file used for the spine PB when sending to printer who does the wire bound books so title page photo captions didn’t match on the latter, again fixed at same time as the 31s. Whilst editing this issue I came across another issue created from the splitting of the Combine and thereby allocating only codes applicable to each book. I slipped up when filtering my excel database and inadvertently left out 27 Owner / Operator Codes from Vol.1 though all but one of them are in Vol.2. These are reproduced in STOCK CHANGES for those who only bought Vol.1. As yet no-one else has spotted this or at least not contacted me, but as with the title page at least it does not materially affect the use of the book if none the less annoying to me. Proves I am only human and sometimes I can’t even see the trees let alone the wood !!

One of the ongoing tasks is trying to keep abreast of new stock with correct classification, numbering and quantities and hopefully several errors in previous editions have been resolved. If anyone else spots an error (not subsequent movements) then please let me know as it is the only way to improve subsequent editions. Don’t assume someone else will spot the obscure as it is always amazing what different things are picked up by different proof readers. On the latter if you feel you have the ability to be a proof reader then please join the team, more heads are always better. It just requires a conscientious approach.

Hopefully most approve of the new layouts and I believe the books are still good value for money with the amount of varied data provided. Note to get the same data from some publishers you will need to buy several books at several times the price of ours. Clearly the only thing missing is photos but why add more to the price of the books when you can get them in TRACKS or take them yourselves.

There has been some confusion over P&P which if you are not using PayPal must be added manually to orders. Using an Order Form makes it clear but as many send in handwritten orders here are some examples of how P&P works (Member prices): up to £14.99 add £1.50, over £15.00 add £3.00, over £60.00 add £6.00

Books Cost P&P Total Pocket Book £7.50 £1.50 £9.00

single Combine Vol. £10.00 £1.50 £11.50

Combine Vol.1 + Vol.2 £20.00 £3.00 £23.00

PB + Combine Vol.1 + Vol.2 £27.50 £3.00 £30.50

If you then want to order Sundries then P&P must also be added separately according to the same price limits. Most Sundry orders are under £15.00 so £1.50 needs to be added. The exception is if you

4 order a protective PB cover which is fitted to the spine PB. This is because I have the stocks of Sundries and spine PBs whereas most other book orders are sent out from the printers so one combined order would have to be split and then attracts twice the P&P. If you use PayPal Please submit separate orders for books and sundries though you can have multiple items on each order. PLEASE do not order each book separately as that attracts a bigger PayPal fee. Just ordering each Vol. of the Combine separately as happens quite often means an unnecessary loss to the Society of 29p. It’s the way PayPal calculates its fees. Note the P&P is nominal and does not fully cover the costs and as is usual now Royal Mail is raising its prices on the 23rd March 2020 by as much as 8%.

Errata: Jan / Feb 2020: A couple of incorrect spellings of Members names: p5 & 52 Michael Warrick was incorrectly named Warwick and on p5, 34 & 36 Brian Fry was incorrectly called Barry. Incorrect photo credits: p40 photo of MPV is by Derek Everson. On p30 bottom photo caption should read 66206 + 60054 (12.15).... 24th January 2020. The FTS Christmas Tour was the 28th December 2019 not the 8th as stated on p65 above the photo.

5 EVENTS

All events organised, either confirmed or with provisional dates are shown below. Further events may be added in due course between issues of TRACKS so keep an eye on our website. PLEASE DO NOT try to book places for Members Only Visits with provisional dates shown by TBC until they are formalised or where the event though confirmed is many months in advance with details yet to be provided. Once they have, BOOKING OPEN will be shown alongside and a request will be made for you to book your place. Most visits do not have limits so no need to panic by booking too early.

Delay in travelling notwithstanding, please note that there is no excuse for booking then not notifying us you cannot then attend. As with events where numbers need to be accurately known by the hosts for a tour, food or room capacity this is not acceptable. We have tried to ease the official’s organising burden and saving you money in postage by allowing members to pay on the day, but this can be abused as it can be then seen as nothing to lose if you can’t be bothered to turn up.

Visit Applications to Tony Whitehead (unless shown differently): Clearly state your name, membership number, and importantly a contact telephone number. If it is for an event with multiple dates eg then indicate your preference / availability for the dates shown. Email is best and he will respond asap. Email: [email protected] or by Tel: 07895 386777 but no calls after 20.45 in the evening please as he will be in bed early as he has to be up for work at 04.30 each morning. Best time to ring is after 18.30 weekdays and weekends. Though Tony does not have an answerphone he will return your tel. call promptly if your number is recorded as a missed call, so don’t panic. Only if you consistently have any trouble contacting Tony or he hasn’t responded after several days then in the last resort contact Trevor or Christine (details on page 2). Note we cannot accept bookings by letter only, as there is no way to quickly contact you if plans have to be amended at short notice.

MEMBERS ONLY VISITS (spaces left / FULL shown in brackets) West Coast Railways, Carnforth 2020: BOOKING OPEN Remaining 2020 dates are as follows. Reserve lists in operation in the event of a fully booked visit. Sat 25th Apr (FULL), Sat 8th Aug (14) & Sat 10th Oct (23)

Places are limited to a max of 30 per visit as it allowed questions to be asked of our guide and prevents getting in each other’s way...well not too much !! The cost is £25 payable on the day though we are deciding whether to make this non-returnable payment up front as minimum number is 20 which if we fall below because of late cancellations means the Society has to pay the shortfall. So please if you confirm to go, do so !!

The usual entry point via the footbridge is now closed, so entry will be at the main access off Jesson Way, Crag Bank. Meet at the station at 11.00 for 11.30 start, those without vehicles will be ferried down to the entrance. The tour will take approx. 3 to 3½ hours so if you are travelling by train please arrange your return accordingly. Needing to leave early is not possible with the revised access arrangements. The entrance is on the south side of Station Road at the Long Marston end near the ‘The Greenway’ cycle path.

For those who went in previous years you will know it is a big site (130 acres) and with more stock than ever it is a lot of walking, several miles up and down sidings. Also for those that missed out last year, remember to visit the secure Compound as that is where most of the stored locos are. We will no doubt be restricted to an hour inside as previously and you will need it all. In 2018-19 this was visited straight away so don’t be late arriving or you will miss this. News from Norfolk (Stuart Moore): The main news this month must be the closure of the lines from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft for engineering works. The closure began on the 1st February and ran to the 16th for the line via Acle and the 23rd for the line via Reedham. During this time the old semaphores have all been taken down, the new colour light signalling commissioned, points replaced at Acle and track replacement at Buckenham on the Reedham line as well as at Lowestoft. As a result

357325 with its Union Jack was seen at Barking of all of this work the new signalling is up and at 15.52 (Sean Davies) running which has seen the return to use of the Berney Arms line, so for the first time since October 2018 there are again two routes to Great Yarmouth.

One thing that didn’t take place that was planned was the replacement of the bridge base at Postwick, just east of Norwich. There has been a TSR on the bridge for while and at the start of the year the road beneath the bridge was closed in preparation for the replacement work. However, in the end the work could not be carried out because of Storm Ciara which prevented the

heavy duty crane from operating and positioning February 27 the bridge base. Therefore there will need to be 59203 passed Reading at 15.31 on 6C76 Acton - another possession in due course for this to be Whatley Quarry, Reading (Chris Addoo) carried out.

Away from the engineering the first train of Mk3s for scrapping ran on 20th from Norwich to Newport hauled by 37401 (see STOCK MOVES). On the 26th February a further rake of Mk3s were taken to the MNR for storage.

The same two Cl.745s, 745007 and 745010 are operating London – Norwich services. With no new Cl.745s introduced in the month, loco power still remains supreme on the intercity runs London.

18 The vast majority of the Cl.755s are now in Mk3s to Neville Hill continue and remain a DRS operation on all of the local lines with just one still powered operation. 37402 ran to and from Neville to arrive in the UK. RAIL TOUR NEWS

Bahamas Rail Tour by Harold Hull: I travelled on rail tour on the 22nd February 2020 from Oxenhope on the KWV to Carlisle via the Settle & Carlisle Line most obviously behind Jubilee 4-6-0 45596 ‘BAHAMAS’. This was the first tour since two sell out tours in 2019. The loco ran unassisted until Hellifield on the return where 47746 was attached to the rear. Due to pathing problems the train ran to Kirkstall up loop before reversing for Cl.47 haulage back to Keighley where a further reversal saw 45596 bring the train into platform 3 on the KWV. Passengers were then treated to a run behind USATC S160 2-8-0 5820 using KWV stock The consist was WCR 99122, 99125, 99352, 99347, 99723, 99311, 4940, 4985, 4984, 4973 plus support coach 14060.

26 PRESERVATION GALAS East Lancs Railway (ELR) Winter Diesel Gala by Spencer Conquest: As this was the first heritage railway event of 2020 and with a day off work, I decided to travel up to the ELR Winter Diesel Gala on Saturday 8th February. Weather on the Saturday was a bright sunny day, albeit very cold, but ideal for a photography.

Prior to the gala I was aware 37109 & 56009 were not running due to mechanical issues, however on arrival I was advised 47765 was also not running due to same issues. This was a shame as ScotRail is one of my favourite liveries so unfortunately this took the tally of locomotives not being available to three, all popular. However, saying that, the patronage was quite busy on the Saturday with trains full. The eight remaining locos running over the three days were: 33109, D5054, 45108, 50015, D832, D9531, D7629 & D1501.

above 33109 Bury Bolton Street (11.49)

right 50015 Ramsbottom (16.10)

below 45108 & D7629 Bury Bolton Street (09.59)

All performed without issues, except 50015 & D7629 having problems with their respective air brakes on the stock when changing locomotives. With the aforementioned three locos unavailable, the timetable fell by the wayside, which was understandable and was a case of trying to remember which loco(s) had worked to Heywood, or Ramsbottom / Rawtenstall.

As with previous galas there were a reasonable number of stalls, selling Railway Memorabilia, on the platform and bridge. A ‘Pie & Pint’ in the Trackside Pub is mandatory when at Bury Bolton Street station and it was quite relaxing to just watch traction come and go for 30 minutes, irrespective of the timetable issues.

The weather forecast on the Sunday showed rain and very strong winds on the back of storm Ciara, so I decided to make an early afternoon exit back to Manchester, which now in hindsight was a good move.

27 With it being a pre- season event and not a full gala, the timetable was very relaxed with plenty of time between some of the services. Overall, a good day out if not a bit chaotic at times but looking forward to the Gala in July.

RAILWAY VEHICLES

This is an occasional series featuring the many dedicated motor vehicles used by the Railways. If you have similar photos of buses or commercial vehicles please contact the Editor, preferably with as much background information as possible.

Ford E83W 10cwt Van: Registered 884 FUF this 1951 built van was seen at Horsted Keynes, BBR 4th June 2012 28 WD AUSTERITY 0-6-0ST LOCO SURVEY

Though some have already been covered in TRACKS under various headings this series will endeavour to fully record the surviving Austerity 0-6-0STs (77) that survive from the 485 built. A versatile loco, they can be found on many preserved railways either working or in a dismantled state. The background to the class was covered in the October 2018 issue of TRACKS on p56.

WD 75118 (S134) [3168]: Built in 1944 by Hunslet Engine Co it entered service as WD 75118 at Bicester and served abroad during 1944-45. After WW2 it was re-numbered 134 and was sold in 1965 to the NCB working at Primrose Hill Colliery, Swillington where it received the S prefix. Moving to Wheldale Colliery where it became Wheldale No.7, it was overhauled in 1972 and became the last operational steam loco at a Yorkshire pit when it entered preservation at the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway (EMB) in late 1982. Ladders were fitted at Wheldale to allow easy access to the tank filler which are still carried. Once a new set of boiler tubes were installed it ran for 10 years until the mid 1990s and has not run since, initially languishing alongside Bolton Abbey Station but has recently started an overhaul in 2019 (see current photo at end).

29 1 [3788] ‘MONCKTON No1’: Built in 1953 by Hunslet Engine Co for NCB service and started its career at Monckton Colliery, Royston near Barnsley where it was ‘named’ ‘MONCKTON No1’. It was converted in 1963 by Hunslet as discussed in the background notes (see October 2018 issue). It still has the Kylpor chimney. When Monckton closed in 1967 it was transferred to Gawber Colliery, Mapplewell north of Barnsley. It entered preservation in 1980 with EMB and worked until 1981 then stored until 1997, re-entering service in 2002 after a protracted overhaul. It worked until 2005 when withdrawn to fix issues, returning to service in 2006 but withdrawn again in 2009 needing a new firebox. It is stored at Bolton Abbey station.

Alan Titchmarsh was on hand to reveal a plaque to state the line was open. The first train was full of VIPs from all over the UK. I was lucky enough to get an invite from work to attend.

After 43 years the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust (SDRT) is to leave its home at Washford on the WSR who have given one year’s notice terminating the original 50 year lease to allow use for its own purposes. The decision was unexpected as a new 50 year lease had been signed in 2018 and no prior discussions had taken place. It appears this is in response to the recent financial problems of WSR which the SDRT was unable to assist.

Further Pacers destined for preservation lines are: 142017 (for spares) CHA, 143603 SCR, 144003 GCN, 144004 ALN & 144011 KWV. The cars donated to the 3 winning schemes mentioned in the last issue are to be from Cl.144s.

The construction of high speed lines in France and Spain saw the use of redundant UK locos of classes 37/56 & 58. It is the latter class that this article covers with a total of 36 out of the class of 50 heading across the channel. Owned by DBC, 24 are in France and 12 were in Spain, though only 4 remain.

Spain: No-one has ever submitted photos of the Cl.58s in Spain but Ken Rodgers has visited Monforte Del Sid a couple of times. The last time was on the 2nd April 2014 when he managed to get a photo of all eight of the 58s that were stored there. Lucky he did as they are now history as he found on a recent visit to get up to date photos...but 2 weeks too late. Locos were lined up in the order 58020 (L43), 58047 (L51), 58029 (L44), 58031 (45), 58015, 58024 (L42), 58030 (L46), 58043 (L37).

Brief History: Following the use of 14 Cl.37/7s from 2001, in 2003-04 58041/43 were sent to cover for accident damage and were based at Calatyud and Puigverd de Lleida. With further work on the Codoba - Malaga extension another six locos were sent abroad in May 2004, 58020/24/25/29-31. These together with 58041/43, operated from Bobadilla base (near Antequera), then subsequently Almodóvar Del Rio (near Córdoba) and Los Prados (near Málaga). 58031 was also based at Olmedo during 2007 to work on the Madrid-Valladolid AVE line. In 2008 the eight locos moved to Albacete to work on the Madrid to Albacete AVE line with some outbased at Gabaldón. Another four locos 58015/27/47/50 moved abroad in Sep 2008 based at Requena Utiel to work on the extension to Valencia. All 12 locos received dark blue Continental Rail livery with a yellow waist band of ADIF (Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviaria, the infrastructure arm of national railway operator RENFE) and were given additional two digit L series numbers. Nine locos were transferred to Transfesa ownership in 2012 and continued to see use on AVE construction work based at Monforte del Cid, for the Albacete to Alicante extension. Further work involved the ‘branch’ from Monforte del Cid to Murcia in 2015-16. The three retained by DB Schenker 58025/27/50 were stored at Albacete where they remain together with 58041 which moved there towards the end of the project which ended in 2018. The eight remaining locos 58015/20/24/29-30/43/47 were then stored at Monforte del Cid until they were scrapped early in 2020. 58050 is to be preserved for the National Collection.

For interest just six of the 14 Cl.37s survived, 37703/14/16/18, 37800/84 which were repatriated to the UK in Aug 2012 though 37718 was subsequently scrapped in Jul 2015. 37703/14/16 are operational with the first two preserved. The other eight 37702/99, 37801/02/83/85/88/99 were scrapped in Spain.

France: Alizay Depot by Peter Wreford: On a rather grey day in February (shortly before joining the ICRS) I was able to take a detour to the French railway depot at Alizay in order to enjoy the two lines of Cl.58s rusting away there. I was also able to see a couple of the ex-EWS 66s working there at the same time, so a most enjoyable time despite the cold.

Brief History: From Jun - Sep 1999, 40 Cl.37s were sent to France to work on the LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse) Méditerranée from Valence to Marseilles followed by another two in May 2000. All 42 eventually were repatriated between Jul - Oct 2000. The next project to require UK traction was the LGV Est line in France between Vaires-sur-Marne (near Paris) and Baudrecourt (near Metz). Nne Cl.56s and 14 Cl.58s were moved through the during the period September to November 2004 based at Hilaire. A further four Cl.56s were sent abroad in Apr/May 2005. The locos were later redeployed to bases at Ocquerre and Pagny-sur-Moselle where they were joined by a further 17 Cl.56s and five Cl.58s. All 49 locos were repatriated. The next project in 2009 was the LGV Rhin-Rhône requiring 24 Cl.58s 58001/04-07/09-11/1318/21/26/32-36/38-40/42/46/49. These were based at Villersexel to work between Villers-les-Pots (near Dijon) to Les Petit Croix (near Belfort). Once the pfoject was complete in late 2010, the Cl.58s moved to Alizay Depot near Rouen ostensibly pending further LGV contract work which has never materialised. On the way however 58044 misbehaved with wheelset problems so was dumped at Woippy Yard, near Metz, where it also remains. Liveries of the 24 are all yellow, branded either TSO on cabside roundel and also with blue solebars or ETF on white bands on cab fronts and sides continuing with a blue mid height bodyside band. ETF liveried locos: 58001/04-06/21/32/36/38/39/42/44/49. TSO liveried locos: 58007/09-11/13/ 18/26/33-35/40/46.

The locos are stored on two sidings as follows, Depot side (9): 58039/46/21/09/18/36/07/35/33 Railway/ Hedge side (14): 58010/05/32/01/38/42/34/13/26/40/11/04/49/06

46 TRAM, LIGHT RAIL & METRO NEWS

Manchester Metrolink by Geoff Hope: Feb 2020: The 14th February was the first day of driver training on the Trafford Park line following signalling being switched on at Pomona overnight of the 12th/13th February. In total three trams are expected to be used between Cornbrook and the Trafford Centre during the operation between 08.30- 19.30 Monday-Saturday.

Also on the 14th February the use of Police dogs, trained to identify cash, explosives, firearms and drugs paid dividends when a suspect was caught after he stepped off a tram at Trafford Bar stop and was found to be carrying a hammer, screwdriver and class A & B drugs. During the evening drugs were recovered from several other commuters. On the 22nd February a tram was attacked by brick throwing youths in Wythenshawe smashing one of the glass doors.

Trams 1020 & 2001 were scrapped by CF Booths on site at Old Trafford Depot on Monday 3rd February & Wednesday 5th February respectively leaving 1007 to be stored undercover until it is dispatched to Heaton Park Tramway. Tram 3049 is now carrying an advert for BBC Tiny Happy People. 3076 has reverted to its original livery.

Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway by Harold Hull: Flexity 2 Fleet: Having been in service since 2012 the fleet, with the exception of 017 & 018 should begin to undergo major overhaul and upgrade this year. No order or time scale given. Believed they will emerge in the BTS corporate livery as applied to the bus fleet. Service was totally suspended on the 11th February 2020 due to storm Ciara with the heritage service withdrawn the previous weekend.

Heritage Fleet Update as of 29th February 2020 Balloon 700 & Centenary 648: Both have had refurbished compressors fitted.

Balloon 704: In fitting shop with all old wiring stripped and body back to the frame. Overhaul of bogies commenced. 2 x Z6 controllers overhauled. Fabrication of underframe should start shortly. When overhaul complete will return as 241 in 1950s livery.

Balloon 717: Visited Starr Gate for tyre turning removing the horrendous flat that has been present for a for while.

Standard 143: Traction motor expected back from repair end February.

Railcoach 679: Apertures now cut for destination boxes. Templates made for curved glass in drivers cab side windows. Aluminium cab window surrounds ordered.

Boat 230 and 675/685: Rewire underway.

Coronation 304: The only surviving Coronation car to retain its Vambac (Variable Automatic Multinotch Braking Acceleration Control) equipment. Compressor has been returned and refitted. Some specialist fittings still awaited for door rams. Once refitted testing of doors and air systems can 47 start. Next job for this will be the M&T compressor. Both the air and electrical side will be overhauled which will take about 3 weeks when funds are available as expected cost in excess of £3000.

BARRY SCRAPYARD

With 45699 having recently swapped identities to 45562 ‘ALBERTA’ in November 2019 this is a timely reminder that it nearly never made it out of Barry scrapyard as it unfortunately received severe damage. Due to a shunting accident the middle driving wheels were cut which should have meant it was a non starter for preservation.

Built in 1936 at Crewe by the LMS as Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0 45699 ‘GALATEA’ 5699 it was named after HMS Barry 11th December 1976 (wd 11/64) GALATEA. Following withdrawal it was note the centre driving wheels cut temporarily stored at Eastleigh Works until moving to Barry in January 1965. Saved in 1980 by Brian Oliver it was originally only to be as a source of spares, particularly the boiler for classmate 45690 ‘LEANDER’ and was stored at Carnforth. Its tender had already been acquired from Barry for 45491. In 1987 with space limited, 45699 was moved to SVR who had previously purchased it in 1983 along with 45690. Both locos then were sold on in 1994 to Dr. Peter Beet with 45699 stored at Tyseley still in ex-Barry condition until 2002 at which point it was sold to WCR and returned to Carnforth where it was restored involving the casting of new driving wheels. It returned to steam in April 2013 in BR crimson lake with a current boiler certificate current until 2020. The reason that 45699 has swapped its identity is because during its restoration many fittings were sourced from 45562 which had also been ‘saved’ as a source of spares for 45593 ‘KOLHAPUR’ bought straight out of service by what is now 7029 Clun Castle Ltd.

45699 has featured 13 times in TRACKS since 2014 with the last photo appearing on p31 in the Nov 2019 issue shortly before it changed identity. I have a very nice photo of it now as 45562 in Brunswick green but taken inside Carnforth Steam Shed on our Jan 2020 visit, so unfortunately unable to show.

48 RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS

The Lads Tour 2018 by Ray Smith - Part 1: Romania, never been there. The only Romanian locomotives I have seen were in Budapest. This year, the ‘Lads Tour’ intended to put this right, albeit by just stepping into the country. Our standard itinerary always includes Germany and Austria, with other favourites including Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. All of these were included this year.

left new 445099 t&t 445097 stand at Frankfurt Hbf on a new rake of double deck stock, th 8 June 2018

We always used the Inter-Rail Global Pass Second class, which covers most of Europe and I find very inexpensive. Sometimes, on mainline trains we booked seats, which cost around 5 Euros. This year we decided to use the first class pass. In first class there are normally free seats, so no need to book, therefore the savings from not booking seats compensated for the extra cost of the first class ticket.

Day 1 - Thursday 7th June 2018: As usual, I flew to Dusseldorf from Newcastle then met the others in Frankfurt. Our hotel is literally over the road from the main station. All of the contents of the mini bar are free, including beer. A good place to stay! About 200 yards away (or metres in new money) is an Irish Bar, with good food and you can also watch the passing trams.

Day 2 - Friday 8th June 2018: Frankfurt station, until recently, has been a bad station for cops (for me) apart from the odd private companies unit. Now with the introduction of Cl.445s and 446s I can cop things again. These driving, motor units are replacing the locomotive hauled / pushed sets with a driving trailer at the other end. The classes are identical apart

49 from the platform height access. The Cl.445s are German standard and the Cl.446s are low height. The units are placed at either end of a rake of double deck stock and not in any numerical sequence!

As in previous years the first day was spent going to Kassel Hbf (main station) where we changed to a local tram to Hollandstrasse. From here you can see the yard of the Bombardier workshops where new build Cls.119/147/186/187/188/245 were seen awaiting despatch to their new owners. 386033 (Czech?) and 3008 – 10 for Israel were also seen. You can view from the car park but photographs are strictly forbidden.

Stationed around the DB network are tunnel emergency trains which are on permanent stand by in case they are needed with one set is stationed at Kassel as seen above on the 8th June 2018. The locos are 714003 and 714014 converted from an almost extinct Cl.212, originally 212235 and 212269 respectively.

From Kassel we continued our journey to Fulda, where adjacent are the departmental workshops for the tunnel emergency trains. The station itself sees a good variety of workings, ICEs, main line passenger, local passenger and freight workings. Even an Austrian Cl.1116 came through. We spent a couple of hours there before returning to Frankfurt.

the tunnel emergency locos are being modified and here 714104 (also carrying 170004) ex 714004 (212236) t&t a train with 714106 (also carrying 170006) ex 714013 (ex 212252) is at the other end, Fulda, 8th June 2018

above Cl.114 114036 arrives with a rake of double deck stock, Frankfurt, 8th June 2018, another class soon to be replaced by units

Germany also has ‘Thunderbird’ locos. These are Cl.218s which have been renumbered into the 2188xx series and are normally seen stabled throughout the system in pairs. The Frankfurt pair are usually found resting below the signal box but today they were in action rescuing a failed ICE. The pair, with 218836 leading are departing with the failed ICE presumably taking it to the depot a mile or so away.

Day 3 - Saturday 9th June 2018: The first call of the day was Mannheim. In the short time we waited for our

52 Heidelberg connection, which takes us to the Arena station and the depot, two Swiss cargo locomotives came through on freights. Also scattered around the station were 3 Austrian Cl.1116s. There is also a tunnel emergency train stabled there.

Mannheim shed on a weekend is normally accommodating especially if you are wearing your Hi-Vis vests. However from the bridge leading to it you can almost get every number (with binoculars) and walking to the office you get plenty more. So even if you are refused you do not miss much!

above from the public footbridge where the steps lead down to the depot, this is what you see, an assortment of Cls.145/185/186/187 and behind the shed building there are also a similar amount of main line locomotives as well as the small and heavy shunters

below new 446036 t&t 446017 stands at Mannhein Hbf, 9th June 2018

54 It was then onto Stuttgart, not one of my favourite stations. Rebuilding work has been going on for years. The platforms have been shortened and being a terminus, I find this a boring station. However, below this station are the S-Bahn platforms and also the very busy tram platforms. Making this station more interesting, there are the new Cl.147s working through here and the new 3442 2xx units. Like Leipzig, the plans are to tunnel under the station to avoid reversing. This is a very long term operation.

Returning to Frankfurt we stopped at Karlsruhe where there is a large tram system. The locomotive depot, which once was the home of many Cl.218s now mainly maintains DMUs. Strangely, it is one of the most hostile depots in Germany to get round. (Saalfeld is top of the list, but that is another story). In the past few years we have not only been refused, but threatened because we dared to even enter the depot to ask permission. No idea why! From Karlsruhe we returned to Frankfurt via Mannheim.
