Hopefully none of you have been affected though the former seems to be a regular occurrence now and the latter has yet to have its full effect in the UK. Though many parts of the UK were and are continuing to suffer from the heavy rain our north eastern corner missed all the storms, being close to the eye of all and in the lea of the Grampians. In fact we have had below average rainfall and hardly any snow. Though we have cooler temperatures it has mostly been gloriously sunny throughout February and that has continued into March. The weather has badly affected both mainline and preserved railways with either fallen trees / debris on lines or flooding with Wales particularly badly hit again. The Conwy Valley line and Cambrian routes to Machynlleth and Pwllheli suffered washouts and additional coastal erosion on the latter. KWV and EMB were both flooded. A few incidents of services running into trees has resulted in damage to stock including bubble car 55032 on the Wensleydale Railway and an HST power car between Huntly and Insch near me. In fact I had gone out to photograph this very eastbound service at Keith but I had failed to check my camera battery which was flat, only discovering that on the platform !! Other momentous railway news is that, as thought, HS2 has been given the green light which will see the railways create work for many sectors and opportunities for the next 20 years. In addition to the new government making one big railway decision the most interesting is the £500 million fund to develop new lines / stations in a reversal of the Beeching cuts. Clearly framed by the need to address climate change it is a welcome step and local MPs, authorities and community groups are being urged to propose ideas. Other big events are that Northern is now in the hands of the DfT and Grand Central livery is now appearing on Cl.90s. Our 2020 visits diary is now almost full with another private visit added to Scunthorpe Steelworks / Appleby Frodingham Railway. The only hope is that the corona virus outbreak does not cause cancellations but with a fast moving situation it is even more important you make sure you give full contact details when you book. The next event is our AGM at the Railway Institute on Sat. 14th March so see you there if you are going. Sadly because of a myriad of issues not least I am knackered, as you will understand below, we are not now going to do the mammoth 8 day round trip required to attend the Swanage Diesel Gala at the end of April. With potential restrictions possibly in the pipeline it is also sensible to not commit to booking and we have the added worry of our continuing care of my Mom. On another personal note I really appreciate the many members who have thanked me for the work done as I am sure a few still don’t appreciate that on top of producing two issues of TRACKS (144 pages) the Jan / Feb only finished by doing an all nighter, I was solely responsible for compiling the 5 new books now available and processing the orders which have been pouring in. As of the end of Feb. orders are up 89 on 2019 involving 172 more books meaning a total of 489 orders and 807 books have had to be processed. All of the aforementioned has taken the whole of Jan and Feb but backing this up is a myriad of other unseen background work required to ensure accurate books, info and stock. These have included ordering more sundries, designing adverts for Railways Illustrated and Rail Express, book cover designing, getting quotes, revising Society forms for ordering, membership and TRACKS renewal forms plus co-ordinating dates with Tony for the mammoth visit itinerary plus making sure the website was up to date involving redesigning PayPal links etc. All of this has involved a lot of juggling and thinking ahead with lead times with 2150 emails received and sent since the start of 2020, 36 a day on average !! The point of this is not to rattle my own chain but to hopefully get through to those few members who then query why there is delay with an order or release of TRACKS. I shouldn’t get irritated but when asked recently why TRACKS was late (only 2 days for the pdf) when tackling the above list, well I mean !! It is hard to reiterate enough but this is supposed to be a voluntary hobby done in spare time and were I still employed, had a family or a less than extremely understanding other half, it is highly unlikely the success of ICRS in the last 10 years would have been achieved. You may have noticed a printing error with the Jan / Feb issue of TRACKS in that the first and last 8 pages were printed too high. I can only apologise but having put the effort in to produce good content I find it galling to see a badly printed result. Printers suitably admonished. 3 Due to the pressures mentioned above and the vagaries of printing schedules and upcoming
