Austin 7 Journals Volume 205 July 2013 PRESIDENT’S PREAMBLE As reported previously, planning for the club's Diamond Jubilee celebration events are well underway with an Open House and Barbecue at the clubrooms already been and gone. The entry form for the three events in October has been issued to all club members. The events are:

Date Day Activity Oct 20 Sunday Static Display – Wigley Reserve Glenelg Oct 21 - 25 Monday – Friday Yorke Peninsula tour Oct 26 Saturday Official Birthday Dinner at Marion Hotel

If you haven’t received an Entry Form, please let me know.

If you have a club vehicle of any type, including those used for Modern Regularity events, I encourage you to enter the Static Display at Glenelg’s Wigley Reserve – it’s free to all members. The Static Display will be a great opportunity for members to show to the public the many different types of vehicles used in our club activities.

If you have been to the clubrooms lately you would have seen the most recent renovations, including the rebuilding & sealing of the complete car park. Prior to this, hazardous conditions prevailed with the old tennis court surface and screenings courtyard a constant source of concern. This work has enhanced safer access to the clubrooms for all members and visitors.

To improve the service to members with Historic Vehicles, two additional Assistant Registrars have been appointed to inspect vehicles in readiness for Conditional Registration and for the mandatory 3 yearly inspection. They are Graham Buesnel and Wolf Semler. Wolf will mainly service the south coast and Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs, has received advice from the Government that the Club Membership expiry date in log books for Conditionally Registered Vehicles is to be shown as being the end of each year as prescribed in Clubs' constitutions. In the case of the Austin 7 Club, this will be the 31st of December each year. Therefore it is important that members pay their annual subscriptions by this date, if not, members with conditionally registered vehicles would be in contravention of an owner's responsibility of the Code of Practice and effectively does not allow your vehicle to be driven.

The two month grace period mentioned in the Code of Practice is an allowance to clubs to process paper work before advising the Registrar that certain people are no longer members of that club. The two month grace period mentioned in the Club's constitution allows for a member to rejoin without penalty of a joining fee.

To assist members, there will be two Subs and Rego Days before 31 December, namely, Saturday 23 November & Sunday 15 December from 10am to 2pm on both days. I urge you to take advantage of these days. Membership renewal forms will be available for the year 2014 early October 2013 allowing ample time for the payment of subscriptions either at general meetings or the special Subs & Rego days mentioned.

I would like you to join me in welcoming the following new members & wish them a long & enjoyable time within the club. Shawn BROWN Francesco CIROCCO David COOMBE Robert DIETRICH Peter N.J. LEE Adam MORELLI Peter MUEGGE Clive POLLEY Graham THORPE Scott TYMMONS Luke WRATTEN

For the attention of members who have historic vehicles!

DO YOU HAVE A HISTORIC VEHICLE CONDITIONALLY REGISTERED THROUGH THE AUSTIN 7 CLUB?

If so, annually, you must sign a Statutory Declaration in front of a JP stating that your vehicle has not suffered any modification from both the original inspection MR334 and the conditions set out in the Code of Practice. (C of P available from the clubrooms). The Club will not update an existing or issue you with a new Log Book unless the Statutory Declaration is produced to the Club Registrar.

Members are advised that if your log book is not kept up to date with your current membership and annual statutory declaration, your historic vehicle is not driveable on the road, even though the registration may not have expired. Members must pay their club subscription before 31 December each year to ensure continuity of membership and ability to drive their historic vehicle.

When renewing your registration and after payment, endorse the receipt number in the space provided on the Registration Certificate before the Club Registrar stamps the Certificate with the Austin 7 Club stamp.

Your Vehicle must be inspected by a Club Authorised officer once in a three year period. This will ideally be done at the issue of a new log book.

The Club requests that you carry out any Austin 7 log book business at the many opportunities available at the Clubrooms.

Please do your part to preserve the integrity of this conditional registration system we are privileged to have through our Austin 7 Club.

Former Austin 7 Club President wins CAMS award

Bob Piper a former President of the Austin 7 Club has been awarded the Award of Merit in Melbourne during the 2013 Grand Prix weekend

Citation

Robert (Bob) Maxwell Piper

Bob has been a dedicated member of the motor sport community in South Australia for many years. He has competed in circuit racing in both tin tops and open wheelers and in later years as an off road navigator.

Bob held various positions on the committee of the Austin 7 Club of SA Inc from 1978 to 1985. 3 years as president and in 1985 he was their Competition Secretary. In the early 90’s Bob was the president of the Association of SA Inc. for several years.

As both the Austin 7 Club of SA Inc and FVASA promoted circuit events this gave Bob grounding on the organisers’ perspective of motor sport along with his earlier and concurrent competitor’s perspective. With this knowledge he became the SA State Council chairman from 1994 to 1999. In 2000 he was elected to the board of CAMS. This position he held until 2011 when he retired by not seeking re-election. During his time on the board of CAMS he had periods of holding office as Junior and Senior Vice President.

During his time on the board CAMS has had to deal with some important issues that threatened the organisation and his skills and dedication to the sport brought CAMS through as a much stronger organisation. After his retirement from the board he has remained on the executive of the SA State Council. He is look up to by many of his peers and his mentoring has been very much appreciated by all those that serve with him.

Bob is a part time professional advanced driving instructor with a leading advanced driving school however he still has time to offer his knowledge at club driver training days without charge This is in a hope to bring a greater involvement into the sport he so much loves as well as giving the youth much needed skills for their day to day driving.

Award of Merit - Instituted 1961

Description: The Award of Merit is the highest recognition that can be conferred upon any person by CAMS and is awarded for outstanding individual contribution and duration of service to the development and administration of Australian motor sport, on a national basis.

Criteria: Deserving nominees of this award must have demonstrated duration of services rendered, significant achievement at the highest level and a voluntary contribution to motor sport which stands out above all others.

PAST EVENTS Lakeside Nissan Modern Regularity 14/04/2013 We started the day with 36 drivers and ended with 26, some of the casualties were Barry Hill in a white Holden utility, with expensive sounding clunking noises. He was disappointed not to at least last through practice. Another casualty was Andrew Baohm, who had fitted different new tyres, as the originals were no longer available, but were rubbing on the bodywork in extreme cornering. Although all was not lost, as Dennis Hall loaned his Mazda MX7 to Andrew for a heat. Richard Bailey with his first time out clubman, thought he might have been responsible for the large oil spill, which saw cars sliding off track, and bringing the session to be suspended, until cleaned up. Phil Wilson in a Toyota Soarer contributed to the spill, by having a coolant hose split. It is interesting to note how skilled our drivers are becoming. In the third heat if you scored 19 points, that would put you in 7th place. 12 points for 1st, 14 points for equal 2nd. Although Duane Gent () took out a 1st , a 2nd and a third in the heats, scoring 127 points he was unable to bridge the gap to Paul Seidel (Nissan Skyline) who took out 1st on 114 points. Other heat winners were, Phil Scadding (Toyota MR2 ) 128 points and 3rd on the day, Colin Tucker (Ford Cortina) and Graham Bishop (Blue Streak) We look like having two teams in the upcoming 6 hour modern regularity event, one called "Austin 7", comprising John Tiller, Brett Watters, Anthony Verner and Jason Smyth. The other Team, called "Missin-a-Nissan" comprising, Paul Seidel, Duane Gent, & Phil Scadding, the three who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in this round, plus Andrew Baohm

PAST EVENTS

Lakeside Nissan Modern Regularity 19/5/2013 We had 30 nominations, but only 27 started. Ken Stratton had gearbox problems with his tow vehicle while driving to Mallala. $4,000-00 later he is back on the road. Darren Davey phoned in to advise he had a dose of gastro (Thank you for not sharing it Darren!). Phil Scadding’s social secretary appeared to have double booked. John Illingworth once again experienced gearbox problems, but this time he actually did get on the track, although it was for only one lap Andrew Baohm brought out his newly acquired CV8 in red livery. It looked and sounded excellent, and he was obviously enjoying himself.

Austin 7 Journals Page 14 July 2013

PAST EVENTS

Husband and wife, Richard and Kristen Bailey are not concerned about the overall scores, but have a strong rivalry with each other. Once again we had some very tight driving and hence low scores. With three heats completed it was still anybody’s race, but Paul Seidel managed to win both of the last two heats with only 9 points each (he also won the third heat). Noel Harris took out second place 19 points behind Paul, while Brett Watters was third, a further 50 points behind.

Attention members!

Pre-war Austin 7 Run 25th – 28th April 2013 to Burra Thursday Anzac Day It was warm and sunny when we left Caltex Bolivar on Port Wakefield Road at 9.00am. That place gets busier every time we go there. May have to start using the car park next door. 20 A7’s arrived at Two Wells for morning tea. The run sheet said park near the Tank, some members were looking for a water tank what we meant was a large green ex-army tank.

The gathering of Austin 7's at Two Wells for morning tea. Travelled through Mallala to Balaklava for lunch with no sign of the Joneses, they only live 18km down the road but still no show, received message from the Joneses "see you at Clare or maybe Burra".

On to Balaklava for our lunch stop in the main square.

PAST EVENTS Pre-war Austin 7 Run 25th – 28th April 2013 to Burra Out of Balaklava with a quick drive around the town of Blyth on the way and on to the lookout where Graham Clark was waiting for us. Only 4 cars ventured up the road to the lookout where you could see the Wind farms at Snowtown or across the Gulf to Ardrossan. Through Clare with a minor problem with the instructions where some cars started to head for Port Augusta but quickly corrected and into Burra where we were met by the Sandford’s and Beasy’s from Mildura who had come down to enjoy the weekend. Thursday night’s meal was at the Kooringa Hotel and enjoyed by all. Friday destination Clare

We assembled in the clearing of Paxton’s Cottages for the usual photo shoot with 2 white posts in the way and then made our way to Clare via Farrell Flat. The men then 'dumped' the women in the main street and headed off to Graham Goode’s Restoration workshop where he has probably 20 projects on the go ranging from a 1936 Diamond T 20 seater bus for CMV to an EH Holden.

Having a good look around at Graham Goode's restoration workshop in Clare.

He has probably 15 pre1930 cars under restoration and it is nice to see that people are still restoring Vintage vehicles. Later we pick up the ladies from their shopping Austin 7 Journals Page 17 July 2013

PAST EVENTS Pre-war Austin 7 Run 25th – 28th April 2013 to Burra expeditions and headed to Sevenhills bakery for Lunch. One tip for the men, it has been known for ladies to remove the shoes from the box before they are brought home so they do not appear to be as expensive or new.

Arriving in our Austin 7's at the Sevenhills Bakery & Cafe After lunch we visited the monastery at Sevenhills where some visited the church while others visited the cellars. Then it was onto Mintaro however while having a refreshing beverage at the Magpie and Stump we received a distress call from Kevin And Lynn Haley who had broken down in their Austin 7 and needed a tow. Unfortunately the block and crankcase had parted company and left parts of pistons and rings lying in the engine bay. Friday night's tea was at the Black Sheep restaurant in Burra an Italian Restaurant a little on the noisy side, however enjoyed by all. Because many of the pizza's were more than what many could handle, they

The challenge of the Pizza at the Black Sheep restaurant! allowed many of us to take back to the cottages the remaining portions to enjoy later(which we did).

Saturday destination Peterborough. We departed at 9.00am into a gale force head wind but Scott Appleyard did not make it out of Burra before getting a blow out on a section of roadworks in North Burra. The rest of the party stopped at Terowie for morning tea trying to hide from the wind and hoping it does not change direction before we headed home.

Peterborough for Lunch which some of our members had at a Café in the old picture theatre still with the sloping floor. The building is so big that they had an army jeep and a 100E prefect inside the café just to fill up space. Austin 7's outside the old picture theatre

Andrew Dawes had arranged a visit to see Merv Robinson’s Andrew Dawes' A7 at collection at Whyte Yarcowie on the way back. This once Terowie again proves that the more room you have the more you collect. The collection consists of an Auburn supercharged straight 8 a General Grant tank powered by two GM Diesels about 20 tractors and a few of everything else you can think of.

Merv Robinson's comprehensive auto and farming museum near Whyte Yarcowie. All money raised from viewing goes to the Jamestown hospital. Andrew asked if the Whyte Yarcowie Hotel was still operating and when we were told yes afternoon tea was taken there. I think it has been a long while since he has had 40 people in the hotel. Tea Sunday night was at the Commercial Hotel where Pam Keil led us all in our own version of The Pushbike song. The words are produced below. Some members adjourned back to their rooms to play cards or to the Kooringa hotel as they had a band.

Happy hours - a popular focus at the end of each day Austineering. Sunday home Up and ready to go at 9.00am and down the main road to Riverton for coffee and cake next stop Roseworthy and we are almost home. Regroup at the Roseworthy Hotel thinking of lunch no one was hungry so we all departed from there. Thanks to Andrew Dawes for organising Saturday Afternoon and Graham Clarke for his help around Clare and Sevenhills.

David Grear who spoke on the event at the club meeting on 13 May whose notes are the basis of this report. Greg & Julie Lindsay have penned this poem of the Burra pre war run for your enjoyment.

BURRA 2013 Another run for our pre-war Sevens, peaceful Burra again our goal. The further from the city lights the better they seemed to roll.

We motored up with confidence in cars we loved so dearly. With good runs mapped, and happy hours, a plan for enjoyment clearly.

With Greary at the forefront pilot Michele by his side, we gathered friends along the way all keen to join our ride.

Austin 7 Journals Page 21 July 2013

PAST EVENTS

Armed with dodgy run sheets in our vehicles of infallibility, we motored up from Adelaide to the Paxton Square facility.

Our trailer crew at last gave in. Their treasures at last unloaded. Our doubts about their mobility so quickly were eroded.

Templeton regulars, Jones and Cheryl late in Balaklava for lunch, followed on up to Burra town to shepherd our irreverent bunch.

Most were happy to drive in their Austin, enjoying the thrills we all like, but Geoff really left us all wondering when his back up appeared as a bike.

Friday's run took us back to Clare to check out coffee, and shop. Sadly when a crankcase breaks the pistons and valves all stop.

Pre dinner drinks from fourish on built further on friendship familiar. Times well spent, tales well told closed only as the evening grew chillier.

Those happy hours,[ delayed for some with tune-ups and adjustments critical] brought wisdom ,wit and amusement O on subjects from culinary to clinical.

Insufficient fuel supplies, sadly deflated tyres, low water, sloppy drag links – embarrassment at most, paled against crankcase cracks and broken windscreen posts.

IRJ, resident guru and mentor shared mechanical pearls appealing. But the pressure of the days advice saw him briefly in the house of healing.

Jules with long suffering Tim aboard took over the driving for a change. Led some of the cars in all innocence off course towards the Spalding range.

Austin 7 Journals Page 22 July 2013

PAST EVENTS

Most drivers performed with decorum but one senior bloke had us blinkin'. While clutches are short, sharp and touchy none beat the mayor of Port Lincoln.

Toddling up to the Black Sheep Pizza, the menu, confusing and broad. With mussels, pizza, and top shelf red only the staff could feel bored.

While some of our great crowd were oldies [but none further on than their prime] It was encouraging to see our young ladies joining their seniors to have a great time.

Records of the tour's events were left to our photographer gifted. But unhappy with white posts in the shot Sally demanded the cars all be shifted.

Old ruins, wind towers and kangaroos All ensured the scenery would vary, But the fascination with one white pony Prompted some opinions quite scary.

Most cars were a pre run check, usually regardless of cost. But which Spares Manager rolled to a stop when one little set screw he lost?

A debut run –[ in a real car at last] kept Rick in the midst of the fun. He needed plenty of rehydration after a topless day in the sun.

Our final intriguing venue, arranged by our councillor trusty. Took us off highways and hard top, on a farm track both gravel and dusty.

A final verse in this little ditty which covers a little that occurred on the run, serves only to thank all our friends who created this weekend of fun.

Thank you all

SA/VIC AUSTIN 7 CLUB BORDER RUN 8/10 JUNE 2013 - BORDERTOWN SATURDAY 8 JUNE A small group gathered at Keith Stephenson Park, Mt Barker ready to head east to Bordertown on our annual Border run. Running downhill on good driving roads towards Wellington, we arrived at the ferry crossing and promptly decamped into the courthouse cafe for coffee and cake or a pie. Over the Murray River for an easy run to Meningie for our lunch stop at Andrew & Debbie Dawes home by the shores of Lake Albert. Regrouping at Keith Bakery mid afternoon for the run into Bordertown and our motel. Safely ensconced in the motel, we renewed acquaintances with our Victorian club members before some adjourning into a pot-planted rest area for our happy hour and later inside the dining room for our evening meal.

SUNDAY MORNING 9 JUNE Breakfast in the dining room of the motel before setting off to Glenda Rowett's Gallery & Studio some 6kms from our accommodation. Greg Lindsay introduced Glenda to us who gave a short talk about her paintings & exhibits before going inside the gallery to view them and of course, partaking in morning devonshire tea.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON 9 JUNE After leaving The Rowett's gallery, we headed off towards Padthaway and the Valley View Gardens for our lunchtime appointment with food. This is a picturesque garden in the middle of farm lands of the south east where we enjoyed a barbecue in the company of the Bordertown Vehicle Restorers Club in the grounds of the homestead.

This year, the Athol Lamont Trophy was won by the Stephens' family who drove their '29 Chummy, with small trailer hooked on behind, all the way to the Border Run; and it is this criterion that qualifies any attendee on the Border run to be eligible for this prestigious trophy, so next time make sure you drive your vehicle all the way (moderns not included).

Geoff is seen here with his daughter Kate, who has been on every border run since her first border run as a baby in 2003.

SOME THOUGHTS If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without alcohol, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

Then You Are Probably The Family Dog!

And you thought I was going to get all spiritual ...

Handle every Stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or play with it, Pee on it and walk away

Laurie’s page of Stuff. The ramblings of an old man What does Unley and Smithfield have in common? Probably not much these days but many years ago Tommy the elephant was the common thread. Originally imported into Tasmania, and then moved to Melbourne, before finally arriving in Adelaide in 1851, Tommy the Indian elephant featured in a small zoo and tea gardens at Unley’s Cremorne Hotel. Although very popular Tommy destroyed the gardens and got up to other mischief like easily breaking from his enclosure and wandering Unley’s streets. Tommy was therefore sold to John Smith of Smithfield where he was used to divert the creek away from John’s hotel, draw water from a well (which was sold to passing bullock teams and other stock) and pull a plough. Although Tommy did the job well he was deemed as being too slow so he was on sold to Mr. Matthews the licensee of the Gepps Cross Hotel. He was loved by the Matthews family and was used to clear scrub, move stones around the Yatala Goal, plough fields and give joy rides to people. He was also used, and this is the motoring connection, to pull bogged vehicles out of the road to the hotel. This section of the now Main North Road was then known as Glue Pot Road probably because of the Bay of Biscay soil. It is said that Tommy lived on a trunk full of beer and a loaf of bread a day.

Sadly Tommy died of a chill when he was only nine years old and he was buried in the field by the Gepps Cross Hotel. Today his legacy is remembered by the old Elephant Barn on Main North Road near Gawler, the red steel tusk sculpture at the Smithfield train station, the Elephant Walk walking trail at Munno Para and of course the elephant in the Cremorne Hotel’s emblem.

South Australian motor racing circuits In past ramblings I have written of Nuriootpa and Woodside race circuits. Other well known S.A. circuits are Victor Harbour, Lobethal, Port Wakefield and Mallala. Although it was claimed that the 1936 Victor Harbour circuit was a sealed surface, the section defined as ‘Brickyard Straight’ had a rolled and oiled surface but the rest of the track was sealed. The 9 mile per lap 1937 Lobethal circuit was the first all sealed major circuit. At Woodside the road between the army camp and the main road at Riverview corner was bituminized to complete a fully sealed loop in 1946. There are a few other lesser known circuits which only the more senior members may recall. In 1947 a major road race meeting was held on a track which ran up Morphett Road to Seacombe Road and then down Diagonal Road to meet up with the train line at Morphett Road. Later that year a shorter version of this track was used where Sturt Road was used instead of Seacombe Road. Also in 1947 a ‘mini Mountain T.T.’ was Austin 7 Journals Page 32 July 2013

Laurie’s page of Stuff. The ramblings of an old man p2 held at Crafers. The less than 1 mile circuit was bitumen although the local council had to seal one short section of the track that ran behind the Crafers Hotel. In 1951 the government banned racing on public roads. I read some of the above info in the Veteran Motorcycle Competitors Assoc. Newsletter.

Local Legend There have been a few articles written lately celebrating Glen Dix’s 60 years in motor sport. I have known and been a friend of Glen (pictured right) for over 50 years. He is a quiet, un-assuming gentleman with much motor racing knowledge. I see him usually once a month and we always seem to find something new to talk about or reminisce about. Recently I asked him if he recalled the only time I had seen him injured at a motor racing event. “Yes” he replied. “It was at 8:20 pm on the second of February 1962”. He then recalled that he was waving flags at Rowley Park Speedway when N.S.W. TQ (three quarter midget) driver, Bob Netting, lost control and careered infield. Glen was collected and thrown into the air. When the medics arrived Glen’s first question was would he be o.k. to go to the race meeting at Warwick Farm tomorrow (Glen had already purchased the tickets for the Melbourne meeting). The medic replied “Take a look at your legs son”. When Glen saw the bone protruding and the leg at 90 degrees to where it should be the answer was obvious. “But I’m not going to hospital until after the 50 lap Speedcar Feature” replied Glen. So they carted Glen off to the medical room for preliminary ‘repairs’. After a jab of ‘jungle juice’ Glen was lifted onto the roof of the medical rooms so he could watch the 50 lap Speedcar Feature.

Why did Glen want to watch this race so much? Well this was the first ever 50 lap feature race and Glen had a fair input into the arranging and rule setting and the best speedcar driver I have ever seen, Bob “Two Gun’ Tattersall was one of the competing stars. The race proceeded and this was the race where Tattersall lost the front left wheel early in the race but continued to race on three wheels for around 30 or so laps until the motor gave out. Glen would have been very upset had he not witnessed this race. So then he was loaded into the ambulance and off to hospital. Glen does not have a knee cap in one of his knees now.

Things I thought I knew but now I am not so sure I had always thought that the BMW emblem represented a spinning propeller blade against a blue sky. But now I am convinced this is not the case. BMW, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Bavarian Motor Works in English) was founded in 1916. Following WW1 as part of the Versailles armistice treaty German aircraft factories were prohibited from producing aircraft engines. One of these factories, Rapp Motor Werke (RMW) restructured to form BMW. The emblem of Rapp was a roundel Austin 7 Journals Page 33 July 2013

Laurie’s page of Stuff. The ramblings of an old man p3 containing a black horse’s head. The BMW emblem is a roundel containing blue and white quadrants. The question is what do these blue and white quadrants represent? The logo was registered in 1917 and the first use of the logo is recorded as being on service manuals in 1918. The logo was first used on a R32 motorbike in 1923 and first used on the Dixi (Austin 7) car in 1928. Now this is where the story gets interesting for in the 1942 BMW company journal ‘BMW Werkzeitschrift’ it is said that the BMW logo emerged when a BMW engineer was testing the company’s first 320 hp aero engine when he admired the reflection of the shining disc that radiated from the propeller like an aura of two silver cones against the blue sky background. But this engine was first tested in 1918 after the logo had been registered in 1917. To further confuse the issue in 1929 BMW produced a series of advertisements showing the BMW logo within the spinning propellers of aircraft. However it has since been confirmed that the logo is actually a representation of the Bavarian Nation flag. The trademark act prohibits ‘National coats of arms or other symbols of National sovereignty’. So BMW reversed the blue and white colours of the Bavarian flag within the roundel. The final proof for me came from the BMW archives and a four minute video clip on the origin of the BMW logo. There are many articles on Google on this subject with one of the more interesting being ‘BMW roundel-BMWism.com’ this site shows the many variations over the years. BMW were famous for their reliable aircraft engines also. The Junkers aircraft were powered by BMW radial engines. BMW built from 5 cylinder single row to 14 cylinder double row radial engines and large V12 engines similar to the Rolls Royce Merlin engines. How things change, BMW now own and build Rolls Royce cars.

Another young South Aussie doing well overseas Nineteen year old Robert Branford has won the British Speedway under 21 Championship in England. Robert is the son of former North Arm speedway star Darrell Branford. Robert was able to compete in the British championship as Darrell married an English girl. Robert now proceeds into the World under 21 Championship as one of Britain’s representatives.

Novel electronic stuff In a previous Journal I wrote about model aircraft radial engines. One of the best things about these engines is the ‘old fashioned’ aero engine noises they make. I also mentioned the many other types of model engines that were available, including electric motors. Now electric motors have a lot of advantages including that they are clean, easy to start, reasonably cheap and quiet. But being quiet is not necessarily a good thing. It enables you to fly your plane in built up areas without annoying your neighbours but the sound has to match the plane. (I guess it would be like watching the electric motorbikes race around the Isle of Man). Help is now at hand. It is now possible to buy a ‘Benedini’ electronic sound system for model aircraft. A popular system uses two amplifiers driving two 40 watt 4 inch speakers. The system weighs around 1 kilogram which is very little considering usually more weight than this has to be added to obtain the correct balance to fly the plane.

These systems are great as they reproduce the real engine sounds of yesteryear. You can select either the sound of a Pratt & Whitney double row 14 cylinder Super Wasp engine or the Rolls Royce/Allison V 12 engine. The system allows you to select the Austin 7 Journals Page 34 July 2013

Laurie’s page of Stuff. The ramblings of an old man p4 engine start up mode where the electric engine appears to splutter and cough before settling down to a rough idle and at the finish of the flight the engine shut down sounds are programmed. The sound system is programmed in with the throttle settings so as the plane accelerates on takeoff so does the engine sound. Great stuff. I did not check the price of the system because that should not be a consideration. The sound is everything. And yes the sound can be turned off if you have a ‘greenie’ living nearby.

Old Timer Makes Good I know that we have many Club members who do many good things but I would like to pay special Kudos to one such member. He is one of our Touring Co-ordinators Bill Gower. I first met Bill maybe 40 or 50 years ago when we competed against each other in ‘mud buggies’ (nowadays this is called off-road racing). He was always a happy face and fun was the name of the game. Bill is still involved with the off-road racing scene being the announcer at their events. As these are often two (or more) day events this means time away from home. He is also the announcer at the Sidewinders Junior speedway and his enthusiasm and good nature is appreciated by all. Bear in mind that Bill is now into his seventies and he lives in Williamstown (no I don’t think it was named after him, although Gower Road in Williamstown is probably somewhere in the family history) and he does many miles to provide enjoyment to others. Added to this he has taken on the Club duties and is spending a lot of time arranging the Club’s 60th tour to Yorke Peninsula. Well done and thanks Bill.

Why is it Why is it that when you spin your black tyres on black bitumen you get white smoke? I don’t know either, probably something to do with chemical reaction or something. What is now even more amazing is that you can now get tyres that will produce orange or purple smoke when spun. I will admit I have only seen these tyres at burn-out competitions so maybe they are not available to the general public, yet!

Some non offending funnies (I hope) Barry, a 90 year old man went to his doctor to get a physical. A few days later the doctor saw Barry walking down the street with a beautiful young lady. “You are doing great” said the doctor. Barry replied “Just doing what you said doctor. Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.” He doctor said, “I didn’t say that”, I said, “You’ve got a heart murmur; be careful.” Some quotes:  John Glenn: As I hurtled through space one thought kept crossing my mind – every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder.  Jimmy Durante: Home cooking.
