    Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

    MAGNUS FIENNES COMPOSER Magnus Fiennes is a British composer, record producer, songwriter and creator of music-driven entertainment. He has written music for over a hundred hours of film, television and videogames and has worked with recording artists as diverse as Shakira, Tom Jones, Neneh Cherry, Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Marriane Faithfull, Bryan Ferry and Pulp. Magnus’s film scores include Onegin (1999), Chromophobia, (2005), Donkeys (2007), The Pervert’s Guide To Ideology (2011) and several animated features such as Casper’s Scare School (2006) and Here Comes Peter Cottontail (2005). He has written and produced additional music for Johnny English (2003), Five Seconds To Spare (2000), The Next Best Thing (2000) and Addicted To Love (1997). TV work includes UK primetime shows such as Sky One’s Curfew starring Sean Bean and Billy Zane, Death In Paradise (2011-2020), Hustle (2004- 2012) Murphy’s Law (2005-2007) and The Fixer (ITV 2006-7). Deras musik var en musikalisk motsvarighet till konstvärldens collage, på en och samma gång avig, elegant, depraverad, fantasieggande, poetisk, aggressiv, mystisk, dansant, genomtänkt, spontan och minutiöst producerad. Hårt rockande gitarrsolon kunde varvas med oväntade inslag av saxofon och oboe. I botten pumpade ett sanslöst driv signerat trummisen Paul Thompson, som hade Led Zeppelins John Bonham som hjälte – vilket hördes. Roxy Music införde glamour, dubbeltydigheter, postmodernism, experimentlusta och modemedvetenhet i en dittills jeans- och bluesdominerad rockvärd.
