This study traces the medical and literary history of lovesickness from antiquity through the 19th century, emphasizing significant moments in the development of the medical discourse on love. The project is part of the recent academic focus on the intersection between the humanities and the medical sciences, and it situates literary texts in concurrent medical and philosophical debates on afflictions of the psyche. By contextualizing the fictional works within the scientific theories that informed them, this study argues that the lovesick patient was a point of contact between literature and medicine and that literary authors participated in their own way in medicine’s quest to understand love’s complex psychological processes and to explain the relationship between those processes and bodily functions. This study aims to uncover the ways in which literary works reflected, diverged from, and anticipated scientific thought on the psyche and its afflictions, synthesizing three bodies of knowledge that rarely comment on one another: the history of medical science, the literary iv representation of disappointed love, and Freudian psychoanalysis. Questioning the tendency of medical science after the Scientific Revolution to conceive of lovesickness as a somatic malfunction that excluded the involvement of the rational faculty, literary works by Racine, Richardson, Austen, Gogol, Turgenev, and Dickens dramatized cases of lovesickness that resisted simple physiological etiologies. These accounts portrayed the lovesick subject as an active agent in constructing desire and as a willing sufferer of its effects. They explored psychical processes that were troubling for the concurrent medical model and addressed its limitations by uncovering psychological etiologies that anticipated future scientific discourse. Literature illustrated that love suffering may serve other needs of the psyche, such as to negotiate social norms that restrict the communication of feeling, to exercise a perverse power over the beloved, or to confront and mitigate early traumatic experiences, in a way that would not be described by medical science until the emergence of psychoanalytic frameworks. v Acknowledgments During my graduate studies, I had the great fortune to work with some incomparable mentors without whom this dissertation would not be possible. Not only is her strength instantly depleted, but she is ultimately struck with a severe illness, the symptoms of which include fever, weakness, and delirium. Recognizing the dire effects of unfulfilled, unrequited love on her sister’s delicate constitution, Elinor attempts to subdue Marianne’s passion until it becomes increasingly evident that recovery is the opposite of what the patient wishes. Marianne nourishes the affliction by roaming the cold countryside, avoiding company, and indulging in her melancholy thoughts. The uninitiated apothecary in charge of her care, unaware of the young lady’s personal woes, diagnoses Marianne with an infection and, expecting a speedy recuperation, offers various unsuccessful remedies to treat her body. What the physician fails to diagnose is the psychosomatic nature of the heroine’s malady and that her unwillingness to be cured is the greatest obstacle to recovery. Marianne’s complaints coincide with the symptoms of an illness that was recognized in the medical and literary

Another view of Bhakti is concentration of the mind on God and experiencing oneness with the Divine. Win love through love Although many sages have expressed different views about the nature of Bhakti, the basic characteristic of devotion is Love. Love is present in every human being in however small a measure. The riva (individual) is an aspect of the Divine, who is the supreme embodiment of Love. Man also is an embodiment of Love, but because his love is directed towards worldly objects, it gets tainted and he is unable to get a vision of God in all His beauty.

The main thing for Sukhomlinsky was to awaken the child's desire to learn, to develop a taste for self-education and self-discipline.     The Formation of Interpersonal Attraction and Intimate Relationships on Internet Relay Chat An Exploratory Study CHERRIE JOY F. BILLEDO This research investigated the formation of interpersonal attraction and intimate relationships on Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Two methods were employed: survey and in-depth interview. Purposive and convenience sampling were used for both methods. Results revealed that the formation of in-person and online interpersonal attraction and intimate relationships have similar initial stages of development. For online relationships however, partners have to undergo processes to shift from online to in-person. It was also shown that similar attraction cues were important online and in-person. A closer examination, however, showed that these attraction cues differ in salience and quality. This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of computer-mediated communication, particularly IRC, on the development of intimate relationships. The advent of computer-mediated communication (CMC) via the Internet, is believed to have significant implications on various aspects of human endeavor. People are not only meeting and interacting through the Internet; they are forming meaningful relationships as well. According to an article in Newsweek magazine, the phenomenon of online relationships is growing at a fast rate that it now warrants serious attention (Stone 2001). Nevertheless, we owe most of our knowledge of the reflex to investigators who have dealt only with "preparations," and who have never held themselves to be con- cerned with anything but a subsidiary function of the central nervous system. Doubtless, there is ample justification for the use of relatively simple systems in an early investigation. But it is true, nevertheless, that the concept of the reflex has not emerged unmarked by such a circumstance of its development. In its extension to the behavior of intact organisms, that is to say, the his- torical definition finds itself encumbered with what now appear to be super- fluous interpretations. The present paper examines the concept of the reflex and attempts to evaluate the historical definition. Lee, Chair My dissertation concerns the development of the literary motif of “lovesickness” (sangsa py ǒng ) in late Chos ǒn narratives. More specifically, it examines the correlation between the expression of feelings and the corporeal symptoms of lovesickness as represented in Chos ǒn romance narratives and medical texts, respectively, of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As the convergence of literary and medical discourse, lovesickness serves as a site to define both the psychological and physical experiences of love, implying the correlation between mind and body in the non-Western tradition. The analysis itself is re-categorized into the discussions of the feeling and the body. In the discussion of the feeling, it will be argued that the feeling of longing not only occupies an important position in literature, but also is gendered and structured in lyrics and narratives of the seventeenth century. In addressing the rubric of feelings of “longing,” this part seeks the ii theoretical grounds of how the intense experience of longing is converted to language of love and to bodily symptoms to constitute the knowledge of lovesickness. The second part concerns the representation of lovesick characters in Korean romance, particularly concerning the body politics of the Chos ŏn society.
