2 ABOUT WILLIAM BYRD, 1623, JOHN MERBECKE, 1585 & THOMAS TALLIS, 1585, musicians

John Merbecke was born in 1505, and nothing is known of his childhood. As a young man, he was a chorister at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, and from 1541 until near the time of his death in 1585, he served as chapel organist.

Only a small handful of works by Merbecke have survived, most notably the Booke of Common Praier Noted, 1550, composed to accompany the 1549 Book. The appearance of the 1552 Prayer Book made it obsolete, but more recently, Merbecke’s musical setting has been widely used.

Thomas Tallis was born near the beginning of the sixteenth century, and very little is known of his early life. After a succession of appointments as a church musician, he spent most of his vocation in service to the Crown as musician to the Chapels Royal under four successive monarchs, both Catholic and Protestant. Although always a Roman Catholic, Tallis had the political savvy to survive the shifts in ecclesial loyalties and the musical acumen to respond to the changing needs of the . He is regarded as the father of English Church music since the Reformation.

William Byrd was a student, colleague, business partner, and successor of Thomas Tallis. Most likely born in Lincolnshire in 1543, he was appointed organist and choirmaster of Lincoln Cathedral in 1563 and served until he joined Tallis as a gentleman of the Chapels Royal in 1572. Like Tallis, he was a lifelong Roman Catholic but was successful in winning the support for his music among Anglicans of Puritan tendencies, though not without occasional difficulties. His liturgical compositions cover a vari- ety of musical forms: settings, motets, graduals, psalm settings, English anthems, and occasional music for the great feasts of the church. Byrd composed for the keyboard and wrote works perhaps best described as consort music for the more popular enjoyment of the court.

Tallis and Byrd collaborated on a number of projects and together held the Crown Patent for the print- ing of music and lined music paper for twenty-one years.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

reading 1 Chronicles 15:15,19-25,28 he Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses Thad commanded according to the word of the Lord. The singers Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were to sound bronze cymbals; Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to Alamoth; but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to the Sheminith. Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, was to direct the music, for he understood it. Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeep- ers for the ark. Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, were to blow the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah also were to be gatekeepers for the ark.

4 So David and the elders of Israel, and the commanders of the thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-edom with rejoicing. So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on harps and lyres. Assembly Glory to you, Lord Christ. esus said to his disciples, ”I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He Jremoves every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.” Archdeacon The Gospel of the Lord. Assembly Praise to you, Lord Christ.

5 CONFIRMATION, RECEPTION, & REAFFIRMATION

Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ by a solemn, public reaffirmation of our Baptismal promises, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. The rite of Reception is similar, for those Baptized adults coming to the Episcopal Church from another Christian communion. For a variety of reasons, people may discover a need several times in their life to publicly reaffirm the meaning of their Baptism, in the presence of the Bishop and with laying on of hands—such Reaffirmations will also occur today.

presentation & examination of the candidates Book of Common Prayer, p. 415 Each parish formally presents its candidates for Confirmation, Reception into the , and Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows to the Bishop. The Assembly remains seated during the presentations. Bishop The Candidates will now be presented. Presenters I present these persons for Confirmation. or: I present these persons to be received into this Communion. or: I present these persons who desire to reaffirm their baptismal vows. After all the candidates have been presented, the Bishop asks the candidates: Bishop Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil? Candidates I do. Bishop Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? Candidates I do, and with God’s grace I will follow him as my Savior and Lord. All rise as able. The Bishop addresses the entire Assembly: Bishop Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? Assembly We will. the baptismal covenant Bishop Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own Baptismal Covenant. Bishop Do you believe in God the Father? Assembly I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Bishop Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Assembly I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Bishop Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? Assembly I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 6 Bishop Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Assembly I will, with God’s help. Bishop Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Assembly I will, with God’s help. Bishop Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Assembly I will, with God’s help. Bishop Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Assembly I will, with God’s help. Bishop Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? Assembly I will, with God’s help.

All Amen. 7 laying on of hands The Bishop invites candidates forward. Sponsors and family, please remain in place during this time.

When the rites have been completed for all the candidates, the Bishop concludes with this prayer: Bishop Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 8 Presider It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you are greatly glorified in the assembly of your saints. All your creatures praise you, and your faithful servants bless you, confessing before the rulers of this world the great Name of your only Son. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: All Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Presider We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After Supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Presider Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Presider And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary, Mark, William Byrd, John Merbecke, Thomas Tallis, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. All AMEN.
