Gliptins (Sitagliptin, )

What does this medication do?

These medications work to lower blood sugar levels by increasing the amount of the body produces and decreasing the amount of sugar made by the body. They are used to treat Type 2 in combination with other tablets.

How do I take this medication?

You will be asked to take one tablet a day. Try to take it at the same time each day before or just after a meal. If you forget to take a tablet you can take it later in the day when you remember but don’t take two doses together.

Who can’t take these tablets? This tablet is not suitable for people with Type 1 diabetes, pregnant women or people with a history of .

What are the common side effects?

These tablets are usually very well tolerated. Some people may experience headaches, a rash, or problems with their nose or throat. A serious but rare side effect to be aware of is pancreatitis. If you have severe abdominal pain whilst taking this medication please see your doctor urgently. This group of tablets do not cause you to gain weight.

Do I need to be monitored?

You do not need to check your blood sugars whilst taking this medication. Your doctor will monitor your function whilst you are on it.

Are there any sick day rules?

You should continue to take your medication unless asked to stop it.

What about driving?

You do not need to inform the DVLA if you are on this medication unless any of the following applies to you;

• You have problems with vision in both eyes or in the remaining eye if you have sight in one eye only. • You develop any problems with the circulation, or sensation in your legs or feet which makes it necessary for you to drive certain types of vehicles only, for example automatic vehicles or vehicles with a hand operated accelerator or brake. This must be shown on your driving license. • You need laser treatment to both eyes or in the remaining eye if you have sight in one eye only. You need to notify the DVLA if you hold a group 2 license and are taking this medication. If you have any queries about this medication, contact your GP.
