Annual Report 2012

Brown County Community Foundation, Inc A strong Community starts with a solid Foundation.

Building a Strong Community

Brown County is blessed with a large number of passionate citizens that advocate and volunteer countless hours toward a wide diversity of causes. Your efforts and dollars provide the bricks and mortar necessary to build up this organizational structure and to help it survive year after year. From eliminating invasive species, to building new museums, from feeding the hungry, to helping young thespians stage a play they do in fact share an important commonality. In all cases, these volunteer citizens are catalyzing and raising resources from the community on behalf of the community. These volunteers and organizations are the building blocks that define our community and lead it toward greater civic resilience.

As organizations mature and start to consider sustainability vs. survivability the need for predictable annual sup- port through professionally managed endowments becomes more apparent and important. The Brown County Com- munity Foundation provides the structure and support necessary to gather all of these community building blocks together under one roof. It provides the rock solid organizational foundation where all resources can then be pooled together in one managed component fund. The foundation builds trust through transparency and allows countless donors to express their charitable impulses and to give back to their community.

As the BCCF endowments have grown the organization has became an increasingly robust community asset that identifies areas of concern and uses its donor designated and unrestricted funds to make grants to address local challenges. The Brown County Community Foundation is passionate about the building of legacy and we ask you to join us in enhancing and deepening the connections people make to one another and to our community.

2 From the CEO and Board Chair

From the CEO: Thanks to the efforts of many Brown County citizens, donors and volunteers alike, The Brown County Community Foundation has a long and wonderful history of building com- munity capacity, supporting Not for Profits initiatives, awarding scholarships and providing grants to address areas of shared concern. The best efforts of previous lead- ers have left us this diverse and growing institutional infrastructure to build upon. As the new CEO I am honored to be able to be a participant in this great legacy and chal- lenged to ascertain what this community foundation is best positioned to create. The Brown County Community Foundation has focused on being the center of philan- thropy in the county. It has attracted resources through excellent donor services, through principled leadership and effective grants management combined with a strong commitment to permanence. The Foundation’s strategic advantage has been its community knowledge and its unrelenting advocacy for improvement. Moving forward how can the BCCF effectively mobilize the community and its collective aspirations, engage its toughest challenges and embrace its most inspiring opportunities? Our future success will require the fundamental shift from a mindset of independent value to one of coordinated impact. Understanding how we can be indispensable partners to our community’s improvement strategies and donor portfolio options while promoting partnerships with other organizations will be mandatory. In order to gain this understanding our Board of Trustees is in the process of convening round table discussions with various stakeholders. The Board hopes to identify community initiatives where the foundation can most effectively demonstrate active leadership to max- imize impact. These community initiatives will provide the framework for our grants program and our efforts to build collaborative partnerships in the years ahead.

~Larry Pejeau, CEO

From the Board Chair: This past year of 2012 has been filled with new beginnings which included:  The award of a contract with a new financial advisor – First Merchants Trust  The generosity of the Howard Hughes Legacy Fund and the insight of Marcia Flaherty and Bill Lloyd, Co-executors of the will.  The successful completion of reconfirmed compliance of the Ethical and Operational Standards of Community Foundation and the National Standards for US Com- munity Foundations by Financial and Office Manager Judy Bowling, which ensures that BCCF certification will continue to support and guard the community’s trust  Jenise Bohbrink was hired as Development and Program Assistant  The retirement of CEO Bob Kirlin who accepted the challenge and the reestablishment of the Brown County Play- house as a viable community resource  The hiring of former shop owner, Larry Pejeau as CEO The Board of Trustees is re-energized by the challenge to expand the vision of Legacy. That mission includes a Sustain- ability Plan comprised of a monetary component that will include the partnering of other organizations in the develop- ment of a shared vision in support of community initiatives. The Board is encouraged by the need for additional funds to support the increasing number of outstanding students who apply for scholarship support. The Foundation continues in the effort to award grants to the many agencies whose endeavors to expand services are supported.

Dance Kaleidoscope DO! Project “We can all work together”, “There is beauty in everyone”, “I have more confidence in myself”, quotes from Nashville Elementary students regarding their experience in the 2012-2013 DO! Project. The DO! Project is the collaborative efforts of Dance Kaleido- scope, Indianapolis Opera, Brown County School Corporation, and the financial backing of grants given by The Brown County Com- munity Foundation. Many community volunteers provided their expertise to pull together this wonderful event for the Nashville students. Empowering the youth is wonderful way to strengthening our community. The self-assessment of the students clearly displayed this empowerment. 71% of the surveyed students believed they discovered new talents. Some of the students were quoted saying: “I am a good cameraman!”, I learned how to harmonize”, “I can keep myself from getting nervous”, “I can concentrate!”

Many of the children were mentored by high school students who are considering theatre as their course of study in college adding an “If they can do this I can too” mindset to their experiences. The surveys suggested that 64% of the students discovered they like opera more since participating, 52% enjoy dance more and 41% now consider a career in the arts. What a wonderful testament to building a strong community.

12 Community Service Award Honoring John D. Rudd

In 2003, the Board of Trustees of the Brown County Community Foundation established the Community Service Award in honor of John Rudd’s devotion and demonstrated broad based service to his native county. This award annually honors an individual (or individ- uals) who have demonstrated the commitment, accomplishment, and spirit of John D. Rudd. In acknowledgement of his remarkable record of service, Mr. Rudd was the first recipient of this award. The 2012 award was given in honor of the many contributions of Howard Hughes

Howard Hughes contributed to the Brown County community in ways that were sometimes evident, and other times anonymous.

Over his lifetime of giving, he has contributed financial support toward the Brown County Literacy Coalition, the Brown County Humane Society, the YMCA, the Career Resource Center, Brown County Big Brothers Big Sisters, Brown County Public Library, Salt Creek Trail, the Brown County Historical Society and the Brown County Com- munity Foundation.

Howard had a passion for the arts, and sharing the arts with others. The demonstration of this passion can be seen around the community. Howard sponsored the beautiful Jack Brubaker railings at the Library as well as Charlene Marsh’s “Portal to the World.”

He considered his greatest gift to the community bringing Dance Kaleidoscope and the Indianapolis Opera to the Brown County Elementary Schools. Howard wanted the children to develop love for all forms of art, but especially the performing arts. DK and IO made it possible for the children to not just see the performances, but to dance and sing, as well as learn about all of the “behind the scenes” of live theatre. He loved to be at the schools for rehearsals to watch the children and see their excitement.

Howard truly lived up to the Rotarian motto of “Service above Self.” He was a member of the Brown County Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on the boards of: the Brown County Community Foundation, the Brown County Literacy Coalition, the Career Resource Center, Brown County Economic Develop- ment, Mother’s Cupboard, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity.

Howard passed away in 2011, but his generous legacy will continue as it was his request that his estate be given to charitable programs and projects that will enhance the community he loved -Brown County.

Everyone will find them- selves turning the pages of Lest We Forget slowly and reverently. -Julia Pearson, Director Brown County Historical Society

The Brown County Community Foundation annually offers 28 scholarships to local graduates through a competitive process. The first endowed scholarship at the Foundation was The Larry C. Banks Bronze Star Scholarship. The scholarship, started 1994 by local veterans, was established to honor the only young solider that lost his life in the war in Vietnam. It has received funding over the years from veterans organizations, businesses and many indi- viduals. In an effort to build this scholarship fund to the original goal of $40,000.00 one of the veterans, Michael O’Hara, has written a history of local veteran’s affairs, Lest We Forget. This history spans the years of 1836 to 2012. This work does not focus on the history of warfare but rather on the brotherhood of veterans which are pro- duced because of those wars. It is a history about many remarkable local men and eventually women who respond- ed to their country’s call to duty. The book includes 70 photographs and 40 historic documents and is an invalua- ble resource for anyone interested in local history, veteran’s affairs or genealogy. Endorsed by Brown County School Superintendent David Shaffer, Lest We Forget is available on CD for a minimum donation of $25.00. All do- nations benefit this memorial scholarship. To make a donation to this or any of the scholarships supporting our graduates contact the Brown County Community Foundation.

19 Strong Community Highlight

Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen, Inc Stove/Oven Upgrade To be able to build strength an individual needs to be fed. Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitch- en provides an average of 120 full meals to the Brown County community every day. That’s roughly 43,800 meals each year. The kitchen equipment showed age and were in urgent need of upgrade, particularly the stove/oven range. Mother’s Cupboard applied for the Brown County Community Foundation’s Matching Grant with Cummins Foundation and were awarded the matching funds to upgrade their stove. Doug Cauble, Mother’s Cupboard Board Mem- ber, stated “The favorable response was due in no small part to the fact that the project had been vetted and approved for matching funds by the Brown County Community Foundation.” The new stove produces better quality meals for clients by quicker and more even heating. The volunteers and clients are served in a healthier environ- ment. The service that Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen pro- vide could not happen without the strong foundation of volunteers that dedicated so many hours to feeding our community. For that we thank each and every volunteer.

Planned Giving

Ms. Betty Crews was the Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Brown Coun- ty Habitat for Humanity chapter for 10 years. She understood the dignity of home ownership and believed in the mission of the organization. She also wanted to control the social benefits her estate would provide after her death. Through wise and generous estate planning a portion of her estate was desig- nated to endowed funds at the Brown County Community Foundation. These endowments will provide annual support for the Community Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the Public Library and the Humane Society in perpetuity.

Making your estate wishes known to family and friends can ensure that your legacy continues after you are gone. To learn about your Planned Giving op- tions with the Brown County Community Foundation contact us at 812-988- 4882.

20 Strong Community Highlight

Brown County Playhouse

“Our residency at the Brown County Playhouse has had a long history, making the decision to relocate to campus ex- tremely difficult.” This statement by IU Department of Theatre and Drama chair Jonathan Michaelsen dated Septem- ber 3, 2010 delineating the University’s decision to abandon the historic Nashville Playhouse threw the building‘s fate and an important cultural attraction to the wind. The Brown County Playhouse was donated to the Indiana University Foundation by local businessman Andy Rogers and had been supporting summer theater in Nashville since the first performance in 1949. In a frantic search to save this important town asset a search was undertaken to find the best and most appropriate use for the structure and a new owner to manage the operations. By late September conversations were underway and a campaign to “Save the Brown County Playhouse” was orga- nized. The Brown County Community Foundation was identified as a potential owner and the Board of Trustees and CEO Bob Kirlin accepted the challenge to raise the necessary funds. An ad hoc management group was formed to han- dle the day to day operations of a full time venue. In August of 2011 the BCCF received ownership of the Playhouse from IU. The management group worked diligently and continued to take on more responsibility. As the operational realities of running a playhouse while simultaneous managing the Community Foundation became apparent discus- sions were begun to eventually transfer ownership to the management group. The Brown County Playhouse Manage- ment, Inc. (BCPM) received 501c3 status in May of 2012. IU was informed of the transition plans and the complicated process of transferring ownership continued. Thanks to the generosity of the late Howard Hughes estate funds were offered to allow the assets to be successfully taken off of the BCCF books and the Playhouse’s future was beginning to look brighter. The BCPM group continued to work hard to improve the Playhouse; cleaning, updating, adding a ticket service, im- proved concessions and scheduling a wide variety of entertainment events weekly. The BCCF under Bob Kirlin’s lead- ership continued to provide back office and financial support and were awarded $40,000 in grants from the Smithville Foundation to provide additional program and equipment support. In July of 2013 the Brown County Playhouse has been saved. A variety of entertained is scheduled into the fall. The Playhouse title is on the verge of being trans- ferred to BCPM. The Playhouse will be more vibrant than ever due to the dedication of the BCCF and BCPM boards, staffs and volunteers. The Brown County Community Foundations is grateful for the generous contributions from many individuals who trusted the Foundation to be good stewards of their donations and to work to build partnerships for the betterment of the community.
