Brown County Community Foundation

Each of us is a caretaker in the large garden that is our community and we reap what we sow. Thankfully our community has many wonderful people and community leaders that take on tough challenges, dream big, and work hard to plant seeds of change and cultivate lasting benefits for us all. The Brown County Community Foundation (BCCF) works to develop the community by partnering with these vital leaders.

“Cultivating Our Community” continues to be the ongoing focus of the Brown County Community Foundation. It provides tools, support, and resources to the nonprofits. The BCCF cultivates charitable giving from local /regional donors and transplants these precious funds into sustainable investments that provide perpetual support to various fields of interest or specific organizations. The Foundation identifies and addresses local needs by administering scholarships, providing grants, and linking donors with nonprofits.

In essence, the BCCF helps the community to flourish and grow. It does this by drawing attention and resources to areas of concern. It partners with community leaders to take action and establish shared priorities to produce fruitful outcomes for the people of Brown County.

There are multiple community cultivators within Brown County that have recently helped create incredible gardens that improve the community by: providing food to those in need, teaching essential gardening skills, increasing local food resources, encouraging healthy eating habits, helping to connect citizens, and fostering a spirit of collaboration.

The theme for this year’s Annual Report to the Community was inspired by these cultivators.

“Kind hearts are the gardens, Kind thoughts are the roots, Kind words are the flowers, Kind deeds are the fruits, Take care of your garden And keep out the weeds, Fill it with sunshine Kind words and kind deeds.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (19th Century American Poet) 1 F

From the CEO:

“As my time as CEO of the Foundation comes to an end, I have been reflecting on the developments of the past four years. In that process, two words kept surfacing - vision and passion. Each project that the Foundation has taken on began with a vision - but it took passion to complete these projects. Many years ago Ben Franklin said, 'If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins.' This is still very true and timely even today within the Brown County Community Foundation (BCCF). The Foundation has contin- ued to partner with the community and together we have used reason to identify prac- tical solutions that have shaped the future of Brown County.

Projects that the Foundation helped facilitate through these partnerships include the YMCA, CRC (Community Resource Center), the Library, and the Pavilion. Other more recent Foundation ventures include creating the Duck Race fundraiser, facilitating the Big Brothers Big Sisters consolidation, and reestablishing the McGrayel-Russo Me- morial Golf Outing fundraiser. We continue to enjoy a local treasured venue because the BCCf regained community ownership of the Brown County Playhouse from the University Foundation.

Together, we’ve accomplished a lot. Thank you for your trust, for many times your thinking outside of the box, for sharing your visions for the future and for the pas- sion that has turned many visions into realities in the past four years.”

Bob Kirlin, CEO

From the Board Chair:

“The Brown County Community Foundation continues to support the ‘Leaving of Legacy’ for our community. As Bob Kirlin expressed, vision and passion play a significant role in improving the quality of life in Brown County. It is the Foundation, community leaders, contributors, and supporters that drive those efforts. The Founda- tion supports programs that provide basic human needs of nutrition and wellness. Foundation scholarships and leadership programs prepare our young people for the future and help them to make their contribution. Support for literacy programs and adult education strengthen those who continue to learn and develop new skills locally.

The Foundation encourages all Brown County citizens to not only lead and serve, but also to be proud of their accomplishments. The BCCF does this in part by recognizing Brown County citizens and groups who have made significant contribu- tions to in the arts, philanthropy, and community service.

These programs and efforts continue to create a high quality of life for the people of Brown County. I have been privileged to serve as the chair of the Board of Trustees and work with Bob Kirlin. The Foundation is truly a catalyst for the advancement of Brown County and a guardian of its unique character and legacy.”

Brown County Parks and Recreation

Community Gardens

Deer Run Park is more than just a place to play and enjoy the great outdoors. It’s one of those rare common spaces for members of the community to unite and share common interests. A great example of this is the new “Community Garden.” The Park’s Director Mark Shields says the new community garden does more than provide fresh vegetables. He sees it as a social hub which brings the community together, establishes a sense of ownership and promotes cooperation. Plus, it’s an educational “The garden brings people tool as gardeners help one another to learn new skills and improve on together and establishes a their yields. sense of ownership for a community space. It All 30 plots were quickly rented in 2012, the first year for the gardens, promotes cooperation.” and an expansion is being considered, along with possible gardening Mark Shields, Park’s Director classes. No public funds were used in establishing the area, thanks to the hard work of community supporters like Jim Hahn and a grant from the Brown County Economic Development Commission. User fees, ranging from $15 to $30 a year, pay for it’s maintenance.

This project has grown beyond simply providing a space for local garden- ers. It has become a means for community cultivation and support. Mother’s Cupboard Community Kitchen has been given a plot to produce fresh food for its clients. Caring supporters are also maintaining plots to benefit the Brown County Literacy Coalition and Jackson Township Fire Department.

In 2003, the Board of Trustees of the Brown County Community Foundation established the Community Service Award in honor of John Rudd’s devotion and demonstrated broad based service to his native county. This award annually honors an individual (or individuals) who have demonstrated the commitment, accomplishment, and spirit of John D. Rudd. In acknowledgement of his remarkable record of service, Mr. Rudd was the first recipient of this award. The 2011 award was given in honor of the many contributions of Andy Rogers.

Andy Rogers has contributed to the community in a variety of ways including gifts of his time, talent and financial resources. He has often given without any expectations of recognition or reward. Over his lifetime of giving, he has contributed financial support toward the development of the Brown County Playhouse, the YMCA, the Career Resource Center, and the Brown County Community Foundation.

Andy’s leadership and contributions made it possible for the local artists of the county to gain owner- ship of the Brown County Art Guild building. He assisted them by purchasing the building and then held it until the artists could afford to take possession themselves, never asking for anything in return. Recognizing a great need in the community, Andy served on the Brown County Board of Education assisting in the development of the Junior High Building. He then returned to serve for many years on the School Corporation Technology Committee, insisting that the county bring in improved technology to benefit our youth and our community. Andy also believed in the need for continuing education opportunities in Brown County and helped work to develop the Career Re- source Center.

Andy has given his time serving the community in many ways including serving on the boards of: the BC Community Foundation, the YMCA, the CRC, Leadership Brown County, and the BC Visitors & Convention Bureau. He also represented Brown County on the State Board of tourism and the BC State Park Board. With his extensive record of devotion and broad based service to his community, Andy Rogers was/is an ideal candidate for the 2011 John D. Rudd award.

Since 1998, Brown County Community Foundation has had the privilege of awarding Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships to 29 Brown County High School Graduates. This annual scholarship will pay full four-year tuition and $900 a year for books and equipment to the Indiana public or private college of their choice. The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Indiana students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor’s degree. During the first 15 years of the program, 3,629 students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships statewide. Those scholars are attending 45 different Indiana colleges.

Over the last 4 years, the Smithville Charitable Foundation has helped to create and/or improve the CRC Lending Library, CRC “Basic Skills” Program, CRC scholarships opportunities, the Smithville Summer Play for Youth, and more. Smithville continued its support for Brown County through 2011.
