T H E COL LECTION

R MORE than seventy years the state o f Indiana has been e n n n le ti g pai ti gs . It has not acquired masterpieces of such rarity and worth as to arouse the jealousy o f museum

O f ficials , but it has assembled in the State House a notable n group of portraits . There are forty ca vases , the likenesses of thirty-seven O f the thirty - eight men Who ' have served as chief n n n executive o f I dia a si ce it was made a territory . There are two pictures of three o f the governors , Jennings , Morton, and A Thomas . Hendricks . Except for the portrait of John Gibson , who was acting governor o f the territory on two occasions Of and is included in our list chief executives , the roster is complete to date . At present the portraits are displayed in the corridors on the fourth floor of the State House and in two o f the executive

O f fices where they may be seen at any time . People throughout the state are aware of their existence but unfortunately few seem impressed with the scope or historical signi ficance o f the f n collection . Part O this i di fference may be due to the meager n information which is available about the painti gs , as well as n n n to the poor lighti g a d u satis factory places for their display . The intrusion of O ffice equipment i nto the corridors in recent n years has added othing to their effectiveness . A label attached to the frame o f each portrait gives the name of the subject and his term as chief executive . It does Of not carry, course , the name o f the artist nor the date o f the n n n painting , leavi g people to co clude that each was pai ted from ’ n li fe when the man was occupyi g the governor s chair . Recent no n investigation has shown that such was t the case . O ly t o O f n thirteen o f the portraits , the best our k owledge , were made duri ng the incumbency O f the subject ; the others deviate from ’ the men s terms in office by as little as a year or as much a s (387) 388 IN DIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

n n n n n in a ce tury , depe di g upo the obstacles encou tered securing adequate likenesses . n n n l A collectio of this ki d is importa t for severa reasons . Primarily it is a historical record or chronicle : it preserves the n and n n appeara ce , to a certai extent the perso ality of each of ’ n and n India a s chief executives , bei g a collection of large n n and n painti gs , it le ds dignity disti ction to their o ffice . As some of the portraits are the only known likenesses of the m en a , their document ry value is considerable . n n But the collection is signi ficant for a other reaso . It is n more tha an assemblage of faces . It represents the work of more than a dozen painters who lived and worked in Indiana at n and no t n n di ffere t times , while some of them are very well k ow today , others are ranked as our foremost artists . With the in growing interest American art , particularly that of the n n frontier regions , more atte tio is being given to the men who , however humbly, contributed to the rise of a native movement . The value of the collection to people interested in this phase n o n of the subject depends , quite aturally, up n their knowi g who n n made the portraits a d when the work was do e . Until lately this i n formation was not accessible : most of it had been for i n n . gotten or filed away archives Rece t studies , however , have brought a good deal of it to light , enabling us now to identi fy — — the authors fi fteen in all date the paintings more or less

and . accurately , reconstruct the history of each portrait The n e n followi g sketches are the outcom of this i vestigation . It is no t generally known that Governor Con rad Baker was n In 1 86 responsible for starting the collectio . 9 he began to “ assemble pictures that would convey to future generations an ” 1 In d . idea of how the early rulers of . looked Not satis fied with photographs or daguerreotypes , he undertook the arduous m en task o f getting oil painti ngs . Seventeen had preceded him and as chie f executive of the territory state , and realizing that delay would only add to the difficulty of securing their por o f and n traits , he enlisted the help the legislature obtai ed its

Then he called upon people in di fferent parts of the state to help him find pictures which could be acquired o n borrowed as models for artists to n copy . His ext step was that of selecting the painters for the — different portraits a task which might have been very di fficult no t n i f he had already give some thought to the matter , and i f he no t n n n had cou ted amo g his frie ds several o f the local painters . The sustained i nterest of Governor Baker and his friends n and brought about the desired results withi a few months , the

foundation o f the official portrait gallery was laid . Six artists o n n were employed the project at the time , worki g from living models or from earlier paintings or photographs as the circum

stances required . Their work seems to have satis fied the and Governor met the speci fications of the legislature . Each n n portrait prese ted a di f ferent problem , as the followi g pages n n show . Thirteen o f the seve tee preceding governors had c died , making the job of obtaining likenesses a dif fi ult — n one some had died before the i troduction o f photography . The portraits o f the men who were still living in 1 869 presented no serious obstacles . ’ n Since Baker s administration , the collectio has grown an steadily, each governor posing for his portrait before artist n in of his choice , either duri g his term o ffice or soon after . n n n Upo acceptance , the portraits have bee hu g in the State House and placed under the custody of the Indiana State 1 2 n t Library . Since 9 7 their procurement has bee direc ed by the Indiana Historical Bureau , while the amount appro priated by the legislature has been increased to five hundred

dollars in most cases . For the sake of clarity the following discussion of the indi vidual portraits is based on the chronology o f the administrations n n in rather than on the dates o f the i dividual pai tings . For n in 1 8 stance , the earliest painti g the group , made about 37 , is the 1 8 1 1 8 likeness of Noah Noble , governor from 3 to 37, while

When the commission s for the portraits of the governors n n in 1 86 n were bei g give 9, Hays was one of the leadi g painters n n in India apolis , and it is not surprisi g to learn that he was n asked to make the Harrison portrait . GOVERNORS ’ PORTRAITS 391 tive study o f the known portraits o f Harrison leads to the conclusion that Hays copied an o il portrait which is now in the

n . and library of Bowdoi College The pose , costume , lighting , n n age of the subject in the two painti gs are almost ide tical . Hays succeeded in makin g a very forceful portrait o f n n an n n n Harriso . It is a good likeness a d u usually co vinci g ’ n n n character study . Harriso s expression is resolute a d te se ; a n no t look of i cisiveness , and a little shrewdness , appears in the eyes and about the mouth ; the forms o f the head are strongly ’ n a d fully modeled . Some of the picture s strength comes from n its rich , deep colors ; ruddy flesh to es and deep blacks are l n n — n p aced agai st a gree ish gray backgrou d , and red accents appear at the left where light falls o n the upholstery o f the ’ n n chair . The weakest part of the picture is Harriso s ha d , due n n n to its havi g bee forced i to the picture area from below . For some years there was a copy of the Hays portrait of n Harrison in the State House collectio . It was made by ’ in 1 1 6 n n n n . C . . and T Steele 9 This was I dia a s ce ten ial year , n n n Samuel Ralston , the gover or , asked Steele to pai t the “ ” portraits of four governors who belonged to epochal periods ’ of the state s history . They were Harrison , first territorial n n gover or , Jennings , first state gover or , Morton , the Civil n n and . an n War gover or , Thomas A Hendricks , outsta di g n n figure i the period of development followi g that war . For “ the Harrison portrait Steele is reported to have used pri nts that had been handed down through past generations as ” 4 ’ o wn n o n n authoritative . The artist s i scription the fro t o f “ : the painting contradicts this assertion . It reads After the ” n C . . library portrait , T . Steele The pai tings of the governors were always re ferred to as the library portraits because they in L i ar n in n hung the State b y whe it was the State House . Eve no t o n i f this inscription were the canvas , a comparison o f the two would convince one that Steele copied the painting by Hays . A few years ago the Hays portrait was taken from the n n in n In State House a d hu g the old capitol at Corydo . the 1 n fall of 943 it was brought back to India apolis , repaired , and and hung in the State House , the Steele portrait replaced it at Corydon .

n n n n Joh Gibso , secretary of I dia a Territory , acted as ’ governor until Harrison s arrival in 1 80 1 and also from the ’ time of Harrison s resignation in 1 8 1 2 until the arrival o f the ne w n n gover or , Thomas Posey . His positio is unique in that o n he ran the affairs of the state these occasions , yet he was no t n n recog ized as the actual gover or . There is no portrait of Gibson in the State House and until n n n in n rece tly there was o e the state . Co rad Baker had written B . n n in 1 86 to John Dillo , historia , 9, about the possibility of n m en n n obtaining portraits o f certai , amo g them Gibso , and Dillon replied that he doubted the existence of a contemporary 5 likeness o f the territorial secretary . Baker continued the search during his administration and other attempts were made in n later years to supply the missi g picture . A portrait believed to be o f Gibson was published in the Indianapolis News late in 1 932 in connection with a series of articles about the governors 6 of Indiana , but later investigation disclosed that the portrait was no t that of the secretary of I ndiana Territory but o f a contemporary Pennsylvanian of the same name . It was not until 1 94 1 that i n formation was received that led to the discovery of a John Gibson portrait . In April o f that year the I ndiana State Library received an inquiry from

Mrs . Marie Carey of about the career of Gibson . In the correspondence that followed the library learned that she had a portrait of him which had come down to her from ’ 7 n Gibson s daughter . A fter several months , duri g which time ’ steps were taken to veri fy the sitter s identity and establish the authorship o f the work , it was purchased by Eli Lilly of Indianapolis and hung in the Vincennes home o f William Henry Harrison .

The painter of this portrait is not yet known . At one time

The t n can portrai was probably pai ted in Philadelphia , and , i f we 8 n n n accept the i scriptio on the back o f the ca vas as accurate , it ’ was in 1 80 6 n n made , between Gibso s two terms as acti g ‘ n n h r o r gover or . There is no reaso to doubt t e ep t that it was n pai ted from li fe .

- Gibson appears in the portrait as a heavy , round faced m an n n n , of frie dly dispositio , with a mild but astute expressio o n n his face . The dark a d colorless effect of the picture is due to the poor treatment it has received in the past : at some poi nt in its history it was so vigorously cleaned that its many color glazes were removed .

The portrait o f Thomas Posey , the last chief executive o f n India a Territory , was painted at the time Governor Baker was ordering the work for the State House . A clue to the whereabouts o f an authentic likeness o f Posey came through ’ ’ a picture of him in Dillon s His to ry o f Indianaf Upon writing to the author in Washington for i n formation about the original n picture , Gover or Baker was referred to relatives of Posey in K n in 1 e tucky . They owned a miniature o f him painted 795 n by the oted American artist , Rembrandt Peale . The man selected to copy and enlarge this miniature for the “ ” n state was John Bayless Hill , a you g local artist . Thomas Posey appears younger much too young i f we want to thi nk of the portra it as representing him while — n e in o ffice and his ha dsome , boyish fac is decidedly lacking n n n in character a d expressio . It is regrettable that o portrait n m an - exists depicti g Posey as a approaching sixty three , his n n n age at the time he became gover or of I dia a Territory . The portrait of Noah Noble is another product of Jacob ’ Cox s studio and raises the same queries regarding date and In derivation as does the portrait of Ray . some ways it is less n n compete t tha the Ray portrait , and the fact that Noble died 1 8 n before Ray ( 44 ) may place it at a earlier date . A compari ’ son o f the men s ages as depicted by the paintings leads to the n n nd . a same co clusio Ray Noble were the same age , but in his in portrait Noble appears several years younger , spite o f the n in n n e . li es his face and the coarse , rigid d li eatio of his features This inflexible drawin g is another argument for placing

6 1 8 - 1 8 0 December , 37 December 9, 4 The portrait o f David Wallace is the third in the collection ’ by Jacob Cox and un questionably the best o f this artist s early n production . It is well painted and co vincing in its suggestion o f character , the personality being almost as important in it as the likeness ; the subject is seen and drawn more broadly ; and the composition is less ornate than in the two preceding portraits . Wallace appears as a heavy man with a round face - n and clean cut features . His expressio is incisive and resolute ,

and n . yet sympathetic , he impresses one as a man of convictio s The success with which the artist has given these impres ’ sions leaves little doubt in one s mind that the portrait was in n painted from li fe . But addition to these inter al evidences , n an we have a stateme t from eyewitness o f the sittings . Lew in n Wallace , his chatty story about his early aspiratio s to become o ne an artist , tells how he found his father posing day in ’ “ : Jacob Cox s studio When I heard that Mr . (His first was the portrait of n 8 . 1 6 Thomas Posey ) As the portrait is sig ed and dated 9, there is no question about the authorship or circumstances of the work . It was made from li fe , eight years after the close o f ’ n n and Governor Hammo d s i cumbency , while he was practicing n law in I dianapolis .

The sitter is portrayed very objectively , and the paint is in applied an indecisive , laborious way, with considerable o n and n emphasis details of costume li es o f the face . Hill was n n an d n not a skillful tech icia , lacking experie ce as a portrait n n painter , he had a te de cy to exaggerate minor elements , such

Conrad Baker had his o wn portrait painted late in 1 869 or in 1 8 0 n early 7 , as he was completi g the collection for the state . His respect for James Forbes had grown so steadily as work o n the di fferent paintings progressed that he selected the visiting Scotsman rather than o ne o f the resident artists to make

The picture also has the distinction of being the first in the group n n known to have bee pai ted when the subject was in office . s in Baker is hown sitting a chair , his body turned toward n n n the left , holdi g a letter in his ha d as though discussi g its

n . n m an co tents He is a ha dsome with regular features , a and n heavy beard , thin brow hair ; his expression is genial and his attitude sympathetic . The same rich tones are used here ’ - as in Forbes s earlier compositions . Against a gray green back

’ “ ground the healthy ruddiness o f Baker s face makes a strong S are color note ; the whites of the hirt , collar , cuf fs , and paper set in strong opposition to the black suit ; and touches of green o n the back o f the chair repeat the general tone o f the back n n n n grou d . Forbes put his sig ature o the arm of the chair ear n n the lower left cor er o f the ca vas . For about ten years the picture by Forbes was no t in the n 1 u n collectio . It was removed in 933, at the req est o f Gover or ’ n no t Baker s childre , some of whom felt that it was as good a likeness of their father as an oil painting done by Jacob Cox in 1 88- a from li fe 3 . The family engaged Miss Clar Barrett

Strait , a New York artist , to copy the Cox portrait for the

State House . She was known to members of the family as a capable portraitist and o ne experienced in maki ng copies of

The John Herron Art Institute n o n sta ds that site . In many ways the Chase portrait is the best o f the series n pai ted by Steele for the o fficial collection . It has an airiness and warmth about it which is very pleasant ; this is in keeping with the tendency o f that era to pai nt in brighter colors and th t n reproduce e effec of scintillati g light . The composition is n n and forceful without bei g prete tious , the colors , although

Another factor must have been the artist ’ s mastery o f a method which was most congenial to his temperament . Governor Chase is portrayed seated in a mahogany chair r turni ng toward the right . His attitude and personality a e convincingly described by the artist , for he seems alert and attentive to whatever is going on around him , and one is made to feel a fine character behind the eyes that look out from the n n a canvas with earnest ess and understa ding . This lapse of time is hard to account for . Durbin did not want the legislature to pay for his portrait so he arranged with Wayman Adams to pai nt it with the intention o f donating it to the state . The reports of the State Library, which frequently ’ n in e refer to the gover ors portraits , speak of this gap the colle ’ tion between 1 90 8 and 1 9 1 6 and reiterate Durbin s promise to supply the missing item . Durbin should have been very pleased with his portrait when it was finally hung . Adams has depicted him in a quiet , n n thoughtful mood , faci g his audie ce squarely , and holding on his lap a magazine or n ewspaper which produces a startling white note in an otherwise dark composition . The portrait o f Governor Ed Jackson was the second made h n for t e state by Robert W . Grafto . It was painted midway in ’ 1 2 l Jackson s administration in 9 7 , and it bears the date as wel ’ as the artist s signature . That it was made at Dunes State Park should be o f general interest : Jackson was greatly im pressed by the unique beauty o f the Indiana dunes and the consummation of the acquisition of the tract by the state for a park during his administration was a source of satis faction to him . Since this enthusiasm was shared by the artist , we may believe that the portrait was created under most favorable circumstances . n Grafton has sympathetically i terpreted his subject . Jackson

- - is shown seated in a three quarter view pose , his head turning back toward the observer . His appearance as well as his ’ personality seems faithfully described . Grafton s meticulous and prosaic method of working, together with his predilection in for somber colors , has resulted a dull e ffect . Not even the very pink complexion which he has given his model re li eves its sobriety .

HARRY GUYER LES LIE

n in The third portrait by Robert W . Grafto the State House 1 2 is that o f Harry G . Leslie . It was painted in 9 9, the ’ n Governor s first year in office . A certai amount of spirit and animation have been suggested by the forced pose : Leslie

o n leans forward , his left arm a table and his right hand on n his knee , regardi g the observer with a look of shrewd scrutiny . n The tech ique , like that o f the other paintings by Grafton , is and n n deliberate pai staki g ; the colors are dark , while their monotony is only slightly relieved by a deep red necktie and n rosy flesh ti ts . Shadows are heavy , and the transition o f n forms from shadow i to light is startling . A painting made m a by this polished , photographic method y lack pictorial quali ties present in other portraits but it unquestionably presents a sitter with exactitude .

PAUL VORIES M CNUTT

1 - 1 1 1 January 9, 933 January , 937

Paul M cNutt was the sixth governor to select Wayman n Adams to paint his portrait for the official collectio . Although n in the artist was livi g New York at the time , he came to ’ I ndianapolis at the Governor s request to carry out the com in 1 . n mission This was the summer o f 933 . Sitti gs were held o ne n a in of the studios of the Joh Herron Art School , and r ther n than let the e terprise interfere with administrative duties , the Governor had his secretary accompany him so that letters could 6 4 n n be dictated while he posed . Upo completio the portrait did no t M cNutt n and d satis fy and his frie ds , a secon one was undertaken . This time , the executive o ffice at the State House became the studio . The work progressed as well as could be and expected under the circumstances , when the portrait was finished , it had the approval o f the Governor .

The canvas is large and decorative , although few accessories M cNu have been brought i nto the picture area . tt faces the front , sitting rather stiffly in a chair , with his right elbow rest in o n g a table . A letter held loosely in the fingers of his right n ha d draws the eye to the lower edge o f the canvas , accentuating the long vertical axis o f the composition . The pose is digni fied ’ but the characterization seems weak ; M cNutt s expression fails to convey any dominating traits of character . The colors used by Adams are rich , varying in contrast of tone , and his brush work is dexterous . “ 6 u 1 1 r n n S tar n 20 1 . . o o I dia apolis , Ju e , 933, p 9, c ; A gust 3, 933, t

HENRY FREDERICK S C HRICKER

1 1 1 January 3, 94

The portrait of Governor Henry F . Schricker was approved . 2 1 and accepted for the collection on April 7, 943 . It is the work o f Marie Goth , the first woman commissioned by a n n gover or to pai t his official portrait . Miss Goth stands in the front rank o f her pro fession in n n I dia a . Her popularity as a portrait painter is attested by the many commission s and awards which She has received for a period o f twenty years . Her method o f painting is direct and r l bold , combining skillful b ushwork with a good know edge of n n color and design . She is a ative o f India apolis and studied at Manual Training High School where She received soun d instruction in drawing under Otto Stark . Later studies took her to New York where she attended the Art Students League and n - E painted u der some of the best known artists in the ast . t n n Abou twe ty years ago she moved to Brown Cou ty, Indiana , and it was in her studio there that the sittings for Governor ’ S chrick er s portrait were held . Miss Goth has portrayed Governor Schricker in a cordial mood . He sits erect in a Windsor chair , turning slightly to the n right and fixing his eyes on the observer with an i terested , n sympathetic look . A twi kle in his eye and the upward curve ’ o f his mouth suggest his droll humor . The Governor s trim n n gray suit is see against a deep maroon curtai , and his necktie e r peats the color of the background . The portrait was given a prominent place in the exhibition - n - of sixty two painti gs by twenty two Brown County artists , held at the art gallery in Nashville during the summer o f 1 94 3 . At the close of the exhibition it was delivered to the State House to become part of the collection of portraits o f ’ Indiana s governors . 432 INDIANA HI STORICAL SOCIETY
