Evolving from a wilder- ness area inhabited largely by Indians (who did not havea system of gov- ernment among themselves), to sprawling urban districtswith a complicated governmental system, Indiana has grown politically, culturally,and socially. Chapter 1 deals with the early settlement of Indiana. It discusses the Indian-French-English-colonist's struggle to retain claims to theter- ritory now knownas Indiana. The major events, personalities,treaties and laws are discussed in such n way as to give thestudent an apprecia- tion of our social history and an understanding ofearly attempts at government. Illustrations, personal profiles,and anecdotes are includedto give the student a clearer picture of what life was like interritorial Indiana. Taking a look at the historical development of Indianaserves a two- fold purpose. First, the student gainsan appreciation of the struggles early pioneers went through to find a new home on the frontier. Secondly, a knowledge of early attempts atgovernment and the gradual growth of democracy are placed in chronologicalorder to help the student understand how we got where weare today. The teacher will find William E. Wilson's Indiana, A Historyand pamphlets from the Indiana Historical Bureau entitled "A Brief Historyof Indiana," "Indiana's Road to Statehood,"and "Handbook on Indiana History" good background material. 1 Significant lead-in questionsare primarily aimed at directing the students' reading toward key informationor understanding in each lesson. Also, questions are included at the end ofmost lessons to serveas review, check-up, or possible testingsituations. Diagrams or charts are utilized to simplify major conceptswhenever possible. Pictures and drawings help stimulate discussions inthe classroom and among students themselves. 9 2 Unit I Chapter 2- ONWARD TO STATEHOOD Chapter 2 outlines the steps leading from territorialstatus to full statehood. The student will learn about early politicalleaders of the time period. Major legislative acts passed by Congress whichdirectly affected Indiana's quest for statehood areput in chronological order. Highlights of the Congressional decisions are listedso as not to burden the student or teacher in determining the majorpurposes of such legisla- tion. This also gives the student a quicker understanding ofdecisions made prior to statehood. The major points of the Enabling Act of 1816are listed briefly. This act contained the step-by-step procedure theIndiana Territorywas to follow before the territory would be admitted intothe Union. A brief discussion of Indiana's first constitutionis included. Students will see why the 1816 Constitutionwas regarded as one of the most democratic documents
