PORTRAITS AND PAINTERS OF TH E GOVERNORS OF I NDIANA 1 80 0 - 1 943 T H E COL LECTION R MORE than seventy years the state o f Indiana has been e n n n le ti g pai ti gs . It has not acquired masterpieces of such rarity and worth as to arouse the jealousy o f museum O f ficials , but it has assembled in the State House a notable n group of portraits . There are forty ca vases , the likenesses of thirty-seven O f the thirty - eight men Who ' have served as chief n n n executive o f I dia a si ce it was made a territory . There are two pictures of three o f the governors , Jennings , Morton, and A Thomas . Hendricks . Except for the portrait of John Gibson , who was acting governor o f the territory on two occasions Of and is included in our list chief executives , the roster is complete to date . At present the portraits are displayed in the corridors on the fourth floor of the State House and in two o f the executive O f fices where they may be seen at any time . People throughout the state are aware of their existence but unfortunately few seem impressed with the scope or historical signi ficance o f the f n collection . Part O this i di fference may be due to the meager n information which is available about the painti gs , as well as n n n to the poor lighti g a d u satis factory places for their display . The intrusion of O ffice equipment i nto the corridors in recent n years has added othing to their effectiveness . A label attached to the frame o f each portrait gives the name of the subject and his term as chief executive . It does Of not carry, course , the name o f the artist nor the date o f the n n n painting , leavi g people to co clude that each was pai ted from ’ n li fe when the man was occupyi g the governor s chair . Recent no n investigation has shown that such was t the case . O ly t o O f n thirteen o f the portraits , the best our k owledge , were made duri ng the incumbency O f the subject ; the others deviate from ’ the men s terms in office by as little as a year or as much a s (387) 388 IN DIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY n n n n n in a ce tury , depe di g upo the obstacles encou tered securing adequate likenesses . n n n l A collectio of this ki d is importa t for severa reasons . Primarily it is a historical record or chronicle : it preserves the n and n n appeara ce , to a certai extent the perso ality of each of ’ n and n India a s chief executives , bei g a collection of large n n and n painti gs , it le ds dignity disti ction to their o ffice . As some of the portraits are the only known likenesses of the m en a , their document ry value is considerable . n n But the collection is signi ficant for a other reaso . It is n more tha an assemblage of faces . It represents the work of more than a dozen painters who lived and worked in Indiana at n and no t n n di ffere t times , while some of them are very well k ow today , others are ranked as our foremost artists . With the in growing interest American art , particularly that of the n n frontier regions , more atte tio is being given to the men who , however humbly, contributed to the rise of a native movement . The value of the collection to people interested in this phase n o n of the subject depends , quite aturally, up n their knowi g who n n made the portraits a d when the work was do e .
