  • A Yoga Journey Eboni Adams Monk Pickled Roots, RYT-200, Bsche, MBA the Journey from the Very First Momen
Sacred Crossroads: A Yoga Journey Eboni Adams Monk Pickled Roots, RYT-200, B.S.ChE, M.B.A. The Journey From the very first moment I stepped onto my yoga mat, I began a journey that would propel me to become a yoga instructor and move my life in powerfully unforeseen ways. As I stood there awaiting the magic yoga promised, I hoped yoga would deepen the pride I experienced in the African dashiki that competed with my conservative pearl earrings and corporate suits. In reality, the magic of my yoga began with the impulse to embrace a life based on African principles many years before. And in true yogic fashion, I believe that I, a Black magic woman from the south side of Chicago, was born with the yoga that I practice and lovingly share with my students. My yoga is me. It is a soulful Ayurvedic-inspired Vinyasa practice that evolved from my life experiences. And just as the yoga flows through me, it has a cadence. But, like djembe and conga rhythms, cadence can be difficult to follow. So, when yoga and crisis fused, my life became a blend of belly wails and scatting ad libs. No one ever willingly invites crisis. It just appears, yet it’s timing is intentional. My life as a divorced single mother and busy chemical engineer were looped into a soul-shaking experience to which I will be forever grateful. I’ve learned that times of crisis invite the ultimate yoga, the yoga of self-healing. Only the divine self, inspired by ancient roots, can serve as the teacher during these times.

Let us take a comfortable seat and just let yourself begin to breathe feeling the breath. Feet flat on the floor I would like to share reading it as a work from my Angelou called equality. Equality. You declare you see me dimly through a glass which will not shine though I stand before you boldly and marking time, you do all to hear me faintly as a whisper out of range while my drums beat out the message and the rhythms never change. The quality and I will be free. Equality and I will be free. You announce my ways of wanting that I fly from man to man but I'm just a shadow to you, could you ever understand? We have lived a painful history, we know the shameful past, but I keep on watching forward and you keep on coming last. Equality and I will be frank, equality and I will be free.

  • Travelers, Translators, and Spiritual Mothers: Yoga, Gender, and Colonial Histories
Travelers, Translators, and Spiritual Mothers: Yoga, Gender, and Colonial Histories Narin Hassan Georgia Institute of Technology Abstract Analyzing the work of women traveling to India in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this essay explores the intersections of gender, race, and colonial history and connects them to contemporary cultures of yoga. It suggests that analyzing gender in colonial contexts provides a way to understand the dynamics of yoga cultures more fully, and to place them within a historical and cultural frame. As a mind-body practice that was initially becoming consumed by Western audiences and by women in the late nineteenth century and that continues to be a potent and popular practice globally, yoga in its various forms and representations can reflect how the dynamics of colonialism endure and are culturally sustained. Keywords: Colonialism; Culture; Gender; India; Travel; Yoga In her memoir, The Garden of Fidelity (1930), the British writer, Flora Annie Steel describes her encounter with a group of yogis: They were a queer-looking lot of men, naked and ash-smeared, their lime bleached hair done up in chignon fashion. I took care not to go within defilement range of them, and as I walked, I wrapped my skirts close round me, and once when a man brushed past me carelessly, I gave the pollution cry: ‘Don’t touch me …’ A yogi … said instantly: ‘Sit down, Mem-sahiba, and talk. That won’t hurt us, and won’t hurt you.’ And talk we did. I understood enough about Hindu philosophy to return fragments of Grecian; so we went on at it … when the holy men moved on the next morning there were smiles instead of scowls.
