GOD IS GOD IS FEBRUARY 2017 Dear Saint Mary's family, We are off to a good start for 2017. As I write this letter we are just three full weeks in to the new year and already so much is happening. We have held our first Annual Meeting together, and the response has been very posi- tive. At that meeting we were able to make amendments to the church’s By-Laws that will allow us to go forward with a smaller eight person Vestry, all of whom were elected unanimously by the members present at the meeting. At our February Vestry meeting we will vote for a Junior Warden, Treasurer, and Secretary. With that accomplished we will begin the process of looking at all of the different aspects of the way we at Saint Mary’s currently do things. The end goal of that process is to identify and eliminate any barriers to growth that might not have been considered, and to find ways to improve upon many of the things we are already doing well. To that end, please begin to pray to see if God may be calling you to participate in any of the ministries that currently exist at Saint Mary’s. This is going to be a fun and exciting time for us to bond and grow together as we seek to strengthen the teams and look at the ways they function. Chrismon Tree Ornaments 1106 North Main Street Garden City, KS 67846 Chrismon Ornaments were originated and first made for use on the Christmas tree of Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia, in 1957 by Mrs. Frances Kipps Spencer, a church member. The designs were monograms of and symbols for our Lord Jesus Christ. Because these designs have been used by his followers since biblical times, they are the heritage of all Christians and serve to remind each of us regardless of denomination of the One we follow. All Chrismon Ornaments are made in a combination of white and gold to symbolize the purity and majesty of the Son of God and the Son of Man. The Instrumental Cross and the Use of the Gospel Book Troyes, Bibliothèque Municipale MS 960 Beatrice Kitzinger In approximately 909, a Breton named Matian together with his wife Digrenet donated a gospel manuscript to a church called Rosbeith. They intended it should remain there on pain of anathema, never to be taken from the church by force but provided with a dispensation for removal by students for the express purpose of writing or reading. With the exception of the date, which is recorded elsewhere in the manuscript, these specifications all appear in a short text written in distinctive, highlighted script at the close of Luke’s chapter list (f. 71): These little letters recount how Matian, and his wife Digrenet, gave these four books of the gospel as a gift to the church of Rosbeith for their souls. And whosoever should remove this evangelium from that church by force, may he be anathema—excepting a student [in order] to write or to read.1 The location of Rosbeith is unknown, but we may surmise that it was a church attached to a larger abbey in Brittany, according to Breton nomenclature.2 Apart from their Breton origins and evident appreciation for scholarship, the identities of Matian and Digrenet are similarly murky. The particularizing nature of the note extends only to a statement of Matian and Digrenet’s motive for the gift—“for their souls”—and a designation of the contents: “these four books of the gospel.” We know, however, that the couple was anxious Kitzinger – Instrumental Cross about the fate of their souls at judgment, and we know that they thought the gospel manuscript at hand might help. -

Religious Symbolism and Floral Motifs during the time of the Knights of Malta: The Vestments of the Cotoner Grand Masters Cynthia de Giorgio uring their 268-year sojourn in Malta, the various Grand Masters of the Order of St John donated a wealth of sacred vestments to St John’s, their Conventual DChurch. Two of the more spectacular sets of vestments are those donated by the Cotoner Grand Masters in the 1660s. They are particularly striking due to their extensive use of symbolism, an important artistic tool used during the Baroque period to educate, elevate and enthral. During the reign of Grand Master La Cassiere (1572-1582) the General Chapter of the Order established that each Grand Master had to donate from his personal wealth a gioia to the newly consecrated church of St John within five years of his election.1 As a result, the church of St John holds a precious and unique collection of works of art including sacred vestments most of which were gifts from the various Grand Masters. The inventories of the Order record thirteen gifts of sacred vestments to the Conventual Church, twelve by the various Grand Masters and one by Pope Alexander VII, Fabio Chigi, who was formerly Inquisitor of Malta between 1634 and 1639. Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner, who reigned from 1663 to 1680, donated two Fig. 1 Chasuble and tunicle, from the collection of vestments, a gift of Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner. 255 sets of liturgical vestments.2 One set was in memory of his brother Rafael, who had preceded him as Grand Master, and who had reigned for only three years, dying before he had the chance to donate his gift, and another set which was his personal gift to the church. -

Øyvind Bjøru, University of Texas at Austin, and Na’ama Pat-El, The Univer- sity of Texas, Austin On the Historical Syntax of the Subordination Morpheme in Assyrian Akkadian Akkadian marks subordinated verbs with a special morpheme, Babylonian -u and Assyri-an -(¯u)ni; e.g., ˇsa ir-ra-ru ‘the one he curses’ (OB, Anzu, line 22). Semitists and Assyriologists have debated the origin of these morphemes in Akkadian in general and in Assyrian in particular (e.g., Kouwenberg 2010, Hasselbach 2012). In this paper we will concentrate on the syntax and distribution of the morpheme in Assyrian, where it is morphologically complex and its syntax differs significantly from Babylonian. We will argue that this morpheme becomes generalized in this dialect, shifting from being part of the Assyrian TAM markers with restricted distribution, to acquiring a purely syntactic function which is decoupled from the verbal paradigm. In Middle Assyrian, the morpheme is attested on all verbal and deverbal predicates, with no restriction, including with verbs carrying other suffixes, such as pronominal and ventive. The most interesting development, however, is attested in Neo-Assyrian, where the morpheme is used to mark the right-most edge of the subordinated sentence, no matter what element is located there, including pronominal subjects in nominal sentences; e.g., LU´ la ´u-da a-a-´uˇsu-tu-´u-ni ‘I don’t know who this man is’ (SAA 10, 280: r1-2). -

Court bishops played an important role as royal councillors in matters concerning both church and commonwealth. 1 Royal chaplaincies were sought after, both as important steps on the road of prefer- ment and as positions from which to influence religious policy.2 Printed court sermons were a prominent literary genre, providing not least an important forum for debate about the nature and character of the English Reformation. -

At that time the relationship between these cornerstones of society fundamentally shifted. The result was the preeminence of the individual over government and religion, whereas most of Western history since antiquity had seen the manipulation of the individual by the latter two institutions. Liberalism built on the idea that both religion and government were tied to the individual. Respect for the individual entailed respect for religious diversity and governing authority came from the assent of the individual. -

Besides magical practices against the property and lives of people, the Romans also used generally known and used protective and healing magic. Sometimes magical practices were used in official religious ceremonies for the safety of the civil and sacral community of the Romans. Neben magische Praktik- en gegen das Eigentum und das Leben von Menschen, verwendeten die Römer auch allgemein bekannte und verwendete Schutz- und Heilmagie. Manchmal wurden magische Praktiken in offiziellen religiösen Zeremonien zur Sicherheit der bürgerlichen und sakralen Gemeinschaft der Römer angewendet. It is uncertain how magic has been understood and practised in differ- ent cultural contexts and what the difference is (if any) between magical and religious praxis. Similarly, no satisfactory and all-encompassing definition of ‘magic’ exists. It appears that no singular concept of ‘magic’ has ever existed: instead, this polyvalent notion emerged at the crossroads of local custom, religious praxis, superstition, and politics of the day. Individual scholars of magic, positioning themselves as ostensi- bly objective observers (an etic perspective), mostly defined magic in opposition to religion and overemphasised intercultural parallels over differences1. -
