Steers to £1270 Heifers to £1130

Good numbers forward once again this week and although the general quality was down all those on offer sold to a fierce trade again. Best store steers ran to £1270 for a couple of well farmed Simmental’s (25m) from Raymond Latham of closely followed by bunches of Aberdeen Angus and British Blue steers (28m) from the Tooze Family of Paignton which both saw £1260. Further Blue steers of note included ones at £1235 for Raymond Latham again (26m) and younger sorts (21m) at £1200 for David & Andrew Mortimer of Village. John Cole & Sons of Ivybridge sold a strong Charolais bullock (19m) for £1235 whilst Limousin’s (28m) reached £1160 for the Tooze Family once more and a single Hereford bred steer (26m) made £1155 for Mark Stephens of Plympton. Later born store steers in tremendous demand once again with a pen of six striking Charolais (14m) drawing £1080 apiece for WJA Cross of Huntsham, a price matched by the Hoskin Family of with a smart trio of Simmental steers of a similar age, also quality, young South steers (14m) from Paul Edworthy of Buckland in the Moor saw his best pair ease to £1030 a life. Heifers topped a £1130 for a cracking Aberdeen Angus (21m) from Paul Belworthy of Exeter with an equally good British Blue (21m) from David & Andrew Mortimer just adrift at £1120 and more Blue heifers (19m) to £1090 for an eye catching pen of five from Clive Timms and family of . Simmental heifers (28m) sold well and to £1095 for the Tooze Family whilst John Cole & Son took home £1035 ahead for a trio of Charolais (22m). A couple of smart Hereford heifers (24m) fetched £1020 for AF Willmington of Branscombe whilst the better of the younger females reached £825 for a well turned out South Devon (15m) from Chris Irish of Ashburton.

A slightly larger entry of Stirks and suckled calves met another tremendous trade with the best topping at £790 from

T Spooncer of showing Angus steers (14m), MA & HM Spooncer across from Lewdown presented Hereford steers (10m) which obtained £745 with others to £740 and £710 and Welsh Black steers (10m) to £660. South Devon steers from the Wonnacott family of Chagford achieved £715 (10m) whilst Fleckvieh steers from J Hampton of Lustleigh realised £615. A cracking run of young dairy bred sorts from DC Bartlett of Wellington saw 4 month old Simmental steers achieve £500. Heifers topped at £720 with others to £665 again for the Wonnacott family showing Charolais crosses, South Devon heifers from Anthony Barrow realised £670 (11m) with others from N Vincent of South Brent achieving £565 (11m) & £550. Younger dairy bred heifers looking again a strong trade with Simmental cross heifers from DC Bartlett obtaining £445 with others to £380 (5m).

Another fantastic entry of Dairy Cattle saw a strong number of buyers which had travelled from as far as Wales, Shropshire, Wiltshire and all over the South West. Trade was strong from start to finish and the Sale started with the Summer Gold Sale of Pedigree Jerseys which saw a top price of 3000gns for an exceptional heifer “Whitenhill Barcelonas Windup VG87” by FDL Barcelona, this heifer was backed by 5 generations of VG or EX dams and sold freshly calved by Bruce, Jenny & Jess Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh. The same vendor sold 6 cracking In Calf Heifers topping at 1650gns with others to 1550gns & 1500gns four times and four yearling heifer calves between 360-380gns. Bulling Heifers saw quality heifers by River Valley Circus Craze which were purchased as calves from the Maunlake Dispersal sell really well to a top of 710gns twice and 640gns x 3 from Bill law of . The commercial Milk section again saw a shortage of fresh milk with a Fleckvieh x heifer from Ken & Kathy Cottey of Whimple sell exceptionally well at £1700. Roy & James Amor of Yeovil sold a consignment of Spring Calved British Friesian x cows which had all calved between February-April and they sold to a very strong trade topping at £1480 with others to £1420 and thew consignment of 17 averaging well at £1188 which was £200 per head ahead of the vendors expectation! Messrs Westnedge & Knight of Surrey sold another 55 head with us to another very similar and strong trade to a fortnight ago. There November Calving cows topped at £1450 for a Fleckvieh with others to £1420 and many of the best between £1000-£1150. Messrs PJLS Farms LTD of Bridgwater sold a consignment of 35 Holstein Friesian & Swedish Red x Cows to a strong trade, these cows in the main were due January & February and topped at £1500 for a Swedish Red x third calver due in February with others to £1480, £1400, £1350, £1320 & £1300 and the consignment which included 14 last Autumn Calved empty cows and several imported Cows averaged well at £1009.

Store Lambs to £104 Breeders to £100 Grazers to £105 Couples to £240

2065 STORE LAMBS

A magnificent entry of 2065 store lambs taking us past the 5000 mark so far this year as other Centres struggle for numbers. Trade back just a couple of pounds despite fewer buyers forward, but those present were capable of soaking up the numbers in front of them. Top money today of £104 for Brian Lavers of South Brent who had others at £96.50 followed by Mike Brown of Shaftesbury at £93 & £91 and both Liam Rowe of and Andrew Goddard of Brixton at £90. Forward lambs generally all £78 to £89 but many lacking finish and by no means fit to kill. Nice medium keep farming lambs usually £65 to £77 with smaller sorts £62 to £65 and longer term lambs, of which there were many today, inevitably £52 plus but half a dozen pens of tiddlers selling £30 to £51. Overall average of £66.66 is down £2.30 on last week.

80 GRAZING EWES

A decent number of 80 grazing ewes peaked at £105 for a pair of pure Texel’s from J Hamby of Whiddon Down whilst Suffolk crosses sold to £83 for Ben Tuck of Buckerell and £80 for Tina Haywood of Dawlish and Mules to £70.50 for Mark Brown of as hoggs peaked at £70 for Robert Hine of South Brent.

61 BREEDING EWES

The 61 breeders topped at £100 for FM Dorset ewes, recently weaned and been running with rams from Ray Tucker of Bridford who had assorted shearlings with the same comments at £98. Nick Woodman of Loddiswell sold his best older ewes fresh off their lambs well at £96 and Katherine Bassett of South Brent sold flock aged white Welsh Mules at £88.

23 EWES & 36 LAMBS (59 LIVES)

23 ewes with their 36 lambs saw the best sell to £240 or £80/life for a Suffolk cross ewe with strong twins from John Quick of as other doubles sold to £190 & £180 for Edward Govier of Exeter and ewes with young lambs were typically around the £50 per life mark topping at £114 for Nick Woodman.

A smaller entry of pigs today saw a complement of buyers present representing six abattoirs throughout the UK. Just a few sows sold to a better trade with a top cull of £158 on behalf of Richard & Vicky Gibbins of with others at £141 & £136. Prime Pigs were a splendid trade with the best pens to £129 on behalf of Amber Quinn of Camelford. The same good home reached £115, £112 * £100 for well produced porkers which averaged 91 kg.

Colin Gibbins of Feniton saw his strong finished “Boar” pigs to £126 whilst a lovely run of 92- 98 kg white prime pigs came up from Messrs S G Jose & Son of Launceston and topped at £119 (x4). Buyers were out in force today so if you have any prime or store pigs to sell now is the time. Vendors please note* Please ensure that all pigs are either slapmarked or have ear tags. Any pigs not identified correctly will be sent home.
