ACTA MYCOLOGICA Dedicated to Professor Alina Skirgiełło Vol. 41 (1): 113-124 on the occasion of her ninety-fifth birthday 2006 Natural substrata for corticioid fungi EUGENE O. YURCHENKO Laboratory of Mycology, V.F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany Akademichnaya 27, BY-220072, Minsk [email protected] Yurchenko E.O.: Natural substrata for corticioid fungi. Acta Mycol. 42 (1): 113-124, 2006. The paper reviews the types of substrata inhabited by non-poroid resupinate Homobasidiomycetes in situ in global scale with both examples from literature sources and from observations on Belarus corticioid fungi biota. The groups of organic world colonized by corticioid basidiomata and vegetative mycelium are arboreous, semi-arboreous, and herbaceous vascular plants, Bryophyta, epiphytic coccoid algae, lichenized and non-lichenized fungi, and occasionally myxomycetes and invertebrates. The fungi occur on living, dying, and dead on all decay stages parts of organisms. Besides, the fungi are known on soil, humus, stones, artificial inorganic and synthetic materials and dung. Key words: Bryophyta, Corticiaceae, herbs, lichens, litter, woody plants INTRODUCTION Corticioid fungi (Homobasidiomycetes) is an artificial union of life forms, the assembling of which is based mostly on basidioma morphological organization simi- larity. Our definition of corticioid basidiomata sensu lato includes the types of fruc- tifications ranged from totally resupinate to effuse-reflexed with rather wide effused part in most cases, and from loose arachnoid to crustose and membranaceous in consistency; the hymenophore shape varies from smooth to almost poroid (reticu- late or irpicoid) and long-toothed. Some mycologists still use for them rather con- venient name Corticiaceae s.

  • Fungi and Fungus-Like Organisms in a Temperate Deciduous Forest Canopy
Fungi and Fungus-like Organisms in a Temperate Deciduous Forest Canopy Der Fakult¨at fur¨ Biowissenschaften, Pharmazie und Psychologie der Universit¨at Leipzig eingereichte KUMULATIVE DISSERTATION zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) vorgelegt von Diplom Biologe, UNTERSEHER, Martin geboren am 05. Mai 1975 in Malsch, Karlsruhe Preface and acknowledgements This dissertation is of cumulative type and consists of five papers dealing with canopy research at the Leipzig Canopy Crane (LAK) research facility. The papers have been published in or accepted by both national and international journals. Two contributions from newsletters are also included. Four of the five peer-reviewed papers and one short article deal with the investigation of diversity and ecology of wood decay fungi and fungus-like organisms. The remaining two contributions about tree frogs (Hyla arborea) on trees in up to 30 metres in height exemplify the importance of incidental observations during the fieldwork. As crypto- gams are not considered in the articles, their contents will not be discussed further. The papers are listed in consequential order in the second part of the thesis. The overview of this PhD thesis consists of a review of the publications. A compact description of the methods applied in the field of the Leipzig crane site and in the la- boratory is given as well as a spanning discussion of the main results of this work. Studying treetops of the world’s forests and the life inside is a comparatively new area of environmental science. As mycology is still linked poorly with canopy research, a brief summary of past and present scientific activities in forest canopies follows this preface, hoping that it will help mycologists and other groups interested in environmental science getting familiar with foggers, climbing gear, and canopy cranes.

2004. Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science 1 13(2^:99—108 RECENT MACROMYCETES RECORDS FROM THREE EAST-CENTRAL INDIANA COUNTIES Donald G. Ruch: Biology Department, Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana 47306 USA ABSTRACT. The Smith Great Lake States Foray was held in east-central Indiana in Fall 2002. Since participants of the foray included professional mycologists from the Great Lake States, this provided an opportunity to significantly increase our knowledge of macromycetes (both ascomycetes and basidiomv- cetes) distribution in Indiana. A total of 108 collections was made from Ginn Woods (Delaware Count} >, Camp Windigo (Grant County), and Wilbur Wright Fish and Wildlife Area (Henry County). Species collected from Camp Windigo and Wilbur Wright Fish and Wildlife Area represent new county records. The 12 collections at Camp Windigo included two ascomycetes, nine basidiomycetes, and one slime mold. while the 16 collections at WWFWA included two ascomycetes and 14 basidiomycetes. Of the 80 collec- tions from Ginn Woods, 53 represent new county records. The 80 collections included six ascomycetes. 73 basidiomycetes, and one mitosporic (imperfect) fungus. None of the species reported from the three sites were unexpected based on general region of distribution for each species. Keywords: Macromycetes, basidiomycetes, ascomycetes, mushrooms. Great Lake States Foray. Dela- ware County, Grant County, Henry County, Indiana, Ginn Woods, Camp Windigo, Wilbur Wright Fish and Wildlife Area In an earlier paper Ruch et al. (2001) re- in Delaware County, and Wilbur Wright Fish ported that our knowledge of macromycetes and Wildlife Area (WWFWA) in Henry (both basidiomycetes and ascomycetes) in In- County (Figs. 1, 2).
