Albrecht Classen The ‘Dirty Middle Ages’: Bathing and Cleanliness in the Middle Ages. With an Emphasis on Medieval German Courtly Romances, Early Modern Novels, and Art History: Another Myth-Buster Modern Misconceptions About the Middle Ages Most medievalists are only too aware about the many myths that blur ordinary people’s understanding and conceptualization of the Middle Ages, that is, both negative and positive views. Extreme and miserable conditions in everyday life seem to have existed then, since everything must have been so much worse than today, at least according to the global, but certainly wrong, notion that history, hence also cultural history, is determined by a linear, or progressive, develop- ment.1 We can often only shake our heads considering the extent to which mis- 1 See the illuminating discussion by Otto Borst, Alltagsleben im Mittelalter. insel taschenbuch, 513 (Frankfurt a. • The Element of List in Thirteenth-Century Courtly Romances, with Emphasis on Heinrich Von Dem Türlin’S Diu Crône
“MIT GRÔZEN LISTEN WART GESTALT”: THE ELEMENT OF LIST IN THIRTEENTH-CENTURY COURTLY ROMANCES, WITH EMPHASIS ON HEINRICH VON DEM TÜRLIN’S DIU CRÔNE by Gary C. Shockey Within the greater corpus of courtly romance in the thirteenth century, the concept of list, or cunning, assumes a particularly alluring position. Poets and philosophers throughout the whole of the Middle Ages were clearly fascinated by the notion of a knight, a king, a lady of the court, a seneschal, or a scoundrel twisting others in such a manner as to achieve remarkable success in some venture. The ambiguities of the human condition most likely led men and women to exploit weaknesses in others for personal or professional gain, as well as for the benefit of the realm or sovereign. Clever cunning, guile, and the substance of the quick-thinking man or woman proved to be riveting material for both courtly audiences and the emerging bourgeoisie in the cities and towns, and we are blessed with a variety of texts which demonstrate the art of perspicacity in a myriad of forms. Cognizant of their influence, poets readily employed many of these attributes as socially acceptable vehicles of change, both in a positive and negative sense. The individual bard deliberately chose a path for his protagonists: he or she could use guile in a decidedly evil way, or perhaps in a manner designed to effect a positive outcome. Thus, arguments on the moral underpinnings of list remained the domain of the writer; the poets themselves offer a variety of views on this subject.

  • The Round Table 141
the round table 141 The Round Table A Survey of Recent Scholarship in German (2) hartwig mayer his is a follow up to my earlier survey of research on Arthurian literature Twritten in German for colleagues who do not read German scholarly prose with ease.1 It covers the years 1993/94 to 2000/2001. Much work is still done on the ‘classical’ Arthurian texts (Chrétien de Troyes/ Hartmann von Aue: Erec et Enide/Erec, Yvain/Iwein, Chrétien de Troyes/Wolfram von Eschenbach: Perceval/Parzival), with Wolfram of Eschenbach’s Parzival once again receiving the lion’s share. However, the shift towards research on ‘postclassical’ Arthurian texts (Ulrich von Zazikhoven, Lanzelet; Heinrich von dem Türlin, Diu Crône; Der Stricker, Daniel von dem Blühenden Tal; Der Pleier, Garel von dem Blühenden Tal; Prose Lancelot) continues.2 The major research topic during recent years has been the question of fictionality, of the relationship between fiction and history in literary texts, and with it the question of the role of the author/narrator and of narration in general. These issues are frequently discussed in the context of the orality/literacy debate. Surprisingly missing—if one thinks of the North American scene—are gender studies. A new approach looks at the Arthurian (and other medieval) texts from the point of view of media theory. The two names to be mentioned here are Horst Wenzel and Haiko Wandhoff. In 1995 Wenzel published a major study in which he tried to reconstruct the production of vernacular German literary culture as an integral part of a culture of remembrance which realizes itself still to a large degree in immediate personal contact with the carriers of the culture.3 In 1996 Haiko Wandhoff’s ‘media historical study of courtly literature’appeared.4 In this highly theoretical study, he argues for multisensory communication with special emphasis on the visual dimension of oral recital.

  • The Beginnings of Medieval Romance: Fact and Fiction, 1150-1220
The Beginnings of Medieval Romance Up to the twelfth century writing in the western vernaculars dealt almost exclusively with religious, historical and factual themes, all of which were held to convey the truth. The second half of the twelfth century saw the emergence of a new genre, the romance, which was consciously conceived as fictional and therefore allowed largely to break free from traditional presuppositions. Dennis Green explores how and why this happened, and examines this period of crucial importance for the birth of the romance and the genesis of medieval fiction in the vernacular. Although the crucial innovative role of writers in Germany is Green’s main concern, he also takes Latin, French and Anglo-Norman literature into account. This study offers a definition of medieval fictionality in its first formative period in the twelfth century, and underlines the difficulties encountered in finding a place for the fictional romance within earlier literary traditions. d. h. green is Schroder¨ Professor Emeritus of German at the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and of the British Academy. • The Arthurian Trilogy of Der Pleier: a Reassessment
The Arthurian Trilogy of Der Pleier: a Reassessment Neil Thomas University of Durham Little is known of the poet using the name (or pseudonym) of Der Pleier. It is possible that the name comes from the verb blaejen, 'blow' which would be found in Upper German dialects with initial po. This verb was used for the activity of glass-blowers, so that the poet may have come from a family who practised such a trade. Alternatively, the name could have been a poetic pseudonym which, it has been conjectured, 'refers metaphorically to his writing tech nique of using old materials, melting them up and fusing them into new works'.1 His language and r~ymes assign him possibly to the Salzburg region but the dating of hi s three Arthurian romances (and the sequence in which they appeared) is unknown. The poet mentions Hartmann and Wolfram as celebrated poets which demonstrates that he lived after them, but how long after has been much debated. Most scholars choose the second half of the thirteenth century, approxi mately 1260-1280. Pleier wrote three Arthurian romanc es , Garel von dem bliihenden Tal, Meleranz and Tandareis und Flordibel,2 the combined number of lines of the trio amounting to more than fifty two thousand (almost twice as many as Heinrich von dem Tlirlin's Diu Crone). The first of the above works, Garel, has received most critical attention since it appears to be a response to the Daniel von dem bliihenden Tal (c.1220-1230) of Pleier's literary predecessor, Der Stricker. 3 The latter author is best known as a writer of short stories containing shrewd and resourceful clerical heroes (of whom Pfaffe Amis is the best known), His one Arthurian romance is widely regarded as having transferred such a hero to the knightly sphere, for Daniel typically wins his combats by the application of list (cunning, resourcefulness), Stricker's romance relates how the young Daniel goes to the Arthurian Court to offer hi s services to the King.

  • The Legend of Sir Lancelot Du Lac
The Legend Of Sir Lancelot Du Lac By Jessie L. Weston THE LEGEND OF SIR LANCELOT DU LAC CHAPTER I INTRODUCTORY To the great majority of English readers, those who are familiar with the Arthurian legend through the pages of Malory and Tennyson, the name which occurs most readily to their minds in connection with the court and Table of King Arthur is that of Lancelot du Lac, at once the most gallant servant of the king, and the secret lover of the queen. To many the story of Lancelot and Guinevere is the most famous of all stories of unlawful love. True, of late years the popularity of Wagner's music has made their ears, at least, familiar with the names of Tristan and Iseult. Still, that Tristan and Iseult were ever as famous as Lancelot and Guinevere, few outside the ranks of professed students of mediæval literature would believe; still fewer admit that the loves of Arthur's queen and Arthur's knight were suggested by, if not imitated from, the older, more poetic, and infinitely more convincing, Celtic love-tale; that Lancelot, as Arthur's knight and Guinevere's lover, is a comparatively late addition to the Arthurian legend. Yet so it is. I doubt if any scholar of standing would now argue that Lancelot and his relation to the queen formed an integral portion of the early tradition; if any, conversant with the literature of the cycle, would reckon Lancelot among the original band of heroes who gathered round the British king. In the introduction to my studies on the Gawain legend, I remarked that, if we desired to arrive at an elucidation of the Arthurian problem as a whole, we must first begin with the elucidation of its component parts—we must severally disentangle the legends connected with the leading knights of the cycle before we can hope to understand the growth and development of that cycle.

ADAPTING ARTHUR: THE TRANSFORMATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS OF WIRNT VON GRAFENBERG’S WIGALOIS Annegret Oehme A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Carolina- Duke Graduate Program in German Studies. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Ruth von Bernuth Christoph Brachmann Jonathan M. Hess Laura S. Lieber Kathryn Starkey © 2016 Annegret Oehme ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Annegret Oehme: Adapting Arthur. The Transformations and Adaptations of Wirnt von Grafenberg’s Wigalois. (Under the direction of Ruth von Bernuth) The stories of King Arthur and his noble knights have fascinated audiences for many centuries and continue to being retold and fashioned to attract modern audiences. Amongst these stories is the tale of Wigalois, the son of the reputable Gawain. This dissertation traces the story of Wigalois across different languages, cultures, and media in order to show how this is a shared German-Yiddish narrative. Furthermore, this dissertations challenges traditional understanding of adaptation within a diachronic and teleological framework by uncovering dialogical and dynamic processes inherent in this narrative tradition. Using the theoretical framework of a combined Adaptation Studies and Medieval Literature Studies’ notions of unstable texts my argumentation focuses on eight specific examples: Wirnt von Grafenberg’s Wigalois (1st half 13th ct.), Italian murals from the fourteenth century, Wigoleis von dem Rade (1483/93), Viduvilt (Yiddish, 16th ct.), Johann Christoph Wagenseil’s Belehrung der Jüdisch-Teutschen Red- und Schreibart (Yiddish and German, 1715), Gabein (Yiddish, 1789), the illustrations by Ludwig Richter (before 1851), and Die phantastischen Abenteuer der Glücksritters Wigalois (Comic, German, 2011).
