  • 1972 4 - 8 October Sydney – Port Macquarie
Andrew Cowan/John Bryson in the Mitsubishi Galant GS – from the cover of the 1973 regulations booklet 1972 4 - 8 OCTOBER SYDNEY – PORT MACQUARIE 86 PREAMBLE Again the rally returned to Port Macquarie and it was now evident the town would be ‘home’ for the event for the foreseeable future. Dan White took over from Alan Lawson as Road Director, having assisted him in 1971. Dan held this position until after the 1977 event, and his presentation of the course each year, and the road books, was quite outstanding. The overseas drivers came in force again and took out three of the top four placings, with the outright position undecided until the last few stages. Nissan and Mitsubishi attended in full force with a number of cars and flew their mechanics from Japan. Dan White spent considerable time studying the forests and the 1972 event proved to be the most competitive of all the ‘Crosses’ run to date, with a very high percentage of competitive distance in the total distance; he also introduced longer stages than those experienced in the past. The biggest pre-event shock was the announcement that the organisers were enforcing the FIA vehicle eligibility regulations. This left the Holden Dealer Team in a quandary, for it wasn’t that all cars had to be homologated with FIA papers to prove the legality of any modifications, the Team had strengthened some of the suspension and basic structure to provide a virtually maintenance-free car for a full year of rallying. As the Team was in the midst of preparing for the Bathurst 1000, Dulux Rally and final rounds of the Australian Rally Championship it didn’t have the time to prepare another car for the Southern Cross, or ‘de-modify’ the existing cars.

  • DULUX RALLIES 1971 & 1972 a History
DULUX RALLIES 1971 & 1972 A History Conducted by AUSTRALIAN SPORTING CAR CLUB LIMITED COMPILED BY TOM SNOOKS – April 2019 FOREWORD START OF DULUX RALLY – 1971 I’m a little hazy about the start of the event but I recall in 1970, after I moved to Sydney from Perth (July), I lived with Allan Lawson for some time and he was talking to the Promotions/PR Manager, Roy Waters, of ‘’Balm Paints’’, about an event to promote the company’s upcoming name change to ‘Dulux’. Research showed that the first group to promote to were car repair shops, refinishers, etc, as the company produced a large range of automotive paints and lacquers. It also showed that the most effective way to carry out a promotion was through motor sport, as the operators and workers of the repair shops and refinishers were interested in the sport, and hence the development and conduct of the first true ‘Road and Track’ event in Australia. Allan Lawson was the Event Director for the 1971 event and was also the Event Director of the Southern Cross Rally (1969 to 1971). Both events were conducted under the auspices of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) by the Australian Sporting Car Club (ASCC), of which John Keran was President. Allan invited me to be the Event Administration Manager, and Allan Horsley, Promoter of the Oran Park Raceway, the Race Director. John Keran Allan Lawson Tom Snooks Lawson moved to Queensland early in 1972 and I took over as Event Director of the Dulux Rally, and also was appointed Secretary of the ASCC.

  • Marlboro Holden Dealer Team (MHDT) VB Commodore
Marlboro Holden Dealer Team (MHDT) VB Commodore. One of Australia’s most celebrated and record breaking Touring Cars. The Origins of this car go back to late 1979. The vehicle was constructed in November – December 1979 by the Marlboro Holden Dealer Team (MHDT) under the guidance of John Sheppard. The original specification of the car was a VB model and first seen testing at Calder Raceway in Mid December 1979. The vehicle first ran without guard flares, a makeshift front air dam and was also fitted with an A9X bonnet scoop. Being the first Commodore Group C built, it was used to develop and produce the “race and homologation specification” for the CAMS. The HDT passed to Peter Brock’s ownership in early January 1980. Brock took over the entire team assets including the ‘prototype’ Commodore and its homologation duties to all other Commodore teams. The prototype was then to become the first MHDT racing Commodore. (For reference purposes only, we shall refer to the car as MHDT COMM 1, though this identification of MHDT chassis did not start until the build of the third chassis, the 1981 Bathurst car.) Peter Brock’s ‘new’ HDT, sponsored by Marlboro, was announced on Tuesday 28 February 1980 with the unveiling of the car alongside lead driver Peter Brock, newly appointed MHDT Team Manager Noel Richards and Chief Mechanic Bruce Nowacki. In its first (1980) season, Brock and the car won the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) and posted eight straight ‘pole positions’ (every round of the ATCC) to create a record that will possibly never be broken.

NOVEMBER 9TH TO 18TH DULUX RALLY TROPHY FOR WINNING CREW more commonly known as the ‘Elephant Penis’ 22 23 24 25 Before anyone slings off at Tom, be informed that he was navigating; the driver (and photographer!) was Toby Bent, of Castrol Motor Sport fame at race circuits. Toby Bent, a very wise gentleman, drove Tom on all of the 1972 Dulux Rally course surveys and was wonderful company. Conducted in November, the Dulux Rally 72 was directed by Tom Snooks, who carried out the administration of the 1971 Dulux Rally, and who had become Secretary of the Australian Sporting Car Club. Oran Park’s Circuit Manager, Allan Horsley, was the event's Race Director. Geoff Sproat was the CAMS Course Checker, and he did a very thorough job in making sure the instructions were accurate. The Dulux Rally, with its format of constant variation and continually fluctuating placings, had captured the imagination of a far broader section of the community than the pure enthusiast. Somehow, it even smacked of the old ‘pioneer’ image of the Redex Trials of the fifties, with the additional entertainment of leading motor sport personalities pitching their skills in a travelling motor sport circus so that more than just a privileged few of the population who attended race meetings and rally spectator locations could see them. 26 The major competition organisers - Tom Snooks and Allan Horsley confer at the Hume Weir Circuit At Hume Weir Circuit – Chief Officials Sandra Hand, Tom Snooks, Dianne Lewis 27 THE ORGANISERS Event Director: Tom Snooks Race Director: Allan

THE VICTORIAN RENAULT RENAULT CAR CLUB OF VICTORIA SUMMER 2019 Angelo’s R8 Gordini wins prize at Geelong Revival THE VICTORIAN RENAULT RENAULT CAR CLUB of VICTORIA Dear Renault Car Club Victoria Readers, It is a pleasure to be introducing myself to you all. I have now been Managing Director with Renault Aus- tralia for just over a year and what an eventful year 2018 was. We launched the all-new Megane R.S. with an incredible new offer of two chassis configurations and two transmissions – offering an automatic on the market for the first time! We also saw Koleos become the best-selling Renault in Australia ever – a very successful campaign on our largest SUV saw more people choose our brand. Groupe Renault also launched Alpine Down Under for the first time with the iconic A110 at Motorclassica. A beautiful homage to the original ‘berlinette’ the A110 is true to its roots offering a lightweight, agile vehi- cle which looks the business and has been winning over journalists and drivers the world over. And of course in 2018 we heard the incredible news that one of our favourite Australian sportsmen, Dan- iel Riccardo is joining the Renault F1 team for the 2019 season. We are really looking forward to kicking off his Renault F1 season in March right here in Victoria. Looking forward to some other highlights of 2019 – watch out for us on MKR as we are sponsoring the popular cooking show for the 2nd year running. In mid-year, we will be adding to our SUV family with the launch of Kadjar – the younger brother to Koleos – and a great looking compact SUV at that.

  • History of PIARC & Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit
HISTORY OF PIARC & PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT INTRODUCTION – SIXTY YEARS, FROM 1952 TO 2012 Phillip Island, located in Victoria, Australia, has long been associated with motorsport. The first Australian Grand Prix was held there in 1928 and for eight consecutive years, until 1935, Phillip Island hosted the race on a rectangular public road circuit[1]. The end of public road racing on Phillip Island in 1935 and the development of the closed circuit (that is, a purpose built permanent motor racing circuit) in 1956 were separated by 21 years. Despite the gap between the running of events at the two venues, the existence of an earlier motor racing presence on “Phillip Island gave credence to the concept of the island being an ideal venue for a permanent motor racing circuit. The opening of the Phillip Island Race Circuit in 1956 was the first time in Australia that a full length dedicated paved race circuit that catered for all levels of motor racing had been built. At this time the only circuits were Mt Panorama, Bathurst - New South Wales, Albert Park - Victoria (both raced on twice a year), and Port Wakefield - South Australia, all of which were public road circuits[2]. Phillip Island Race Circuit was conceived and developed by volunteers and amateur motor racing enthusiasts. This is in stark contrast to the more recent circuit development in Australia, notably in Adelaide and Albert Park, which has been undertaken by professional organisations[3] in conjunction with their State Governments. The contrast is also evident at an international level, especially in England which has been one of the key centres of world motorsport development, where much of the recent circuit development has tended to be carried out by commercial operations rather than volunteers[4].
